I LOVE Thresh he was one of my favorite tributes so I hope the actor doesn't mess him up he's amazing! Rue is so cute she's just how I imagined her and I think will be a great Rue!
While I don't have serious problems with these two playing the roles... I saw Rue as more of a "milky" complexion, more mid-western I suppose, instead of full on black. As well as thinking the actress for Rue would resemble more of what I imagined while reading, wide set eyes, an "innocent" look., if you will. I also just assumed Thresh was white when reading the book, for some reason.
@MusicRoxGurl Yeah I thought of Thresh as white when I read the book. And even Rue in my mind was just a lot more tanner than Prim but I think thye've done a good job overall selecting the characters. :)
You guys should watch Columbiana, Amandla Stenberg is in that film, and she's a really good actor. I personally think they got the perfect person to act Rue :)
PS I always thought rue would have been black anyway and I think she has people in the west indies... She and I are the same color and I am fully black....
WTF! You all are so racist! RUE AND THRESH ARE AFRICAN-AMERICAN! SHUT the FUCK UP! Deal with it and no... Not all lead roles got to white people.... Thats just screwed up screwed up view...

Some of the comments here are idiotic and I'm wondering if we even read the same book. Both Rue and Thresh were described as having dark skin. Not remembering, or interpreting the characters' appearance slightly different is one thing. Being pissed about accurate castings is beyond stupid.
okay i havent read all yall comments but i must reply to the arguments on color. if i remember correctly, this is based on the future america where probably there is no means of distinguished race or ethnicity to fall back on. you are mjust described how you look to the eye. the author said Katniss was olive skin with black hair...think italian. Rue was described as dark or brown i cant remember the words exactly but consider african american...its not that big a deal....well kind of..yeah it is
i find it disheartening when looking up fan art for Rue to see many people portray her as Caucasian when it clearly states that she has dark skin in the book. Amandla looks the part not only in terms of physical description but in character as well. There's something very haunting and angelic about her, which suits her perfectly as Rue.
To all the "fans" saying they were never described as black and should be white, actually they WERE described as dark-skinned. "The boy tribute from District 11, Thresh, has the same dark skin as Rue, but the resemblance stops there." from page 126 of The Hunger Games. Sorry that Susan Collins isn't an illiterate dumbass and wasn't going to describe them as straight-up "BLACK", sorry if you didn't pay attention to their descriptions, but that's how it is. Rue & Thresh are perfect.Deal with it.
I LOVED Amandla Stenberg in "Columbiana". That girl was off the HOOK! I was wishing she had finished the whole movie, even though I understand the character had to grow up at some point. Zoe Saldana just, didn't do it for me.
To all you noobs commenting about you didn't know RUE was black, or the author didn't say she was black, is because the author isn't a dumb ass fixated on race like you guys. the author doesn't have to say african american, the book is set in the future, all aspects of race have been probably been wiped out or are no longer relevant. So the author justs describes what she looks like, just like she describes KATINESS. The author never says Katniss is white either!
Thresh and Rue are supposed to be black. District 11's chief industry is agriculture, which would make most sense if it was placed in the south. Nowadays there are a lot of African-Americans in the southern region of the US, in the future it probably wouldn't be any different. I have no problem with them black or white. Quit your bitchin'.
@ChinchillasForever They probably did, I just pictured him differently. This is why I don't like books being made into movies, the characters image is never the same as you image it.
@SlipperyIcicle Aww I know what you mean! They can't really pick characters to please everyone. I'm really upset with the way Effie looked in the trailer. So either way I'm gonna go see it and hopefully it will be ok because the books are amazing
@ChinchillasForever I know, it's difficult to please everyone. I know, I'm not sure if they said her age in the book, but I kept picturing her way younger looking. Yeah, they are totally awesome, I hope the movie has alot of the good moments from the book, especially the one where Thresh kills you know who.
Please tell me that was a joke. Even if you don't think Thresh is black (even though he is) don't let it effect how excited you are for the movie. The movies are never going to be just like the books, we ALL need to except that. Besides I think they're both perfect.
@mitchellgr It's not the fact that his character is black, he could be eletric blue and it wouldn't really change my excitment. The movie is coming out way different then the way I pictured it, which I should of expected. The stuff they are changing is making me less excited, like how there is no Madge in the movie. I know she is not a big character in the book, but she gave Katniss that pin and the pin belonged to a past tribute, now that will be changed.
rue is black get over it. please re-read the book before you open your mouth. so called "fans" rue is perfect and adorable and thresh is awesome. please leave the hate at home. please and thank you
It said dark skinned, not black and especially not African-American. Besides, I don't think she looks like a 'Rue-type' character, anyway. I expected someone smaller, meeker, y'know?
Don't forget, though, that films aren't copies of the book. Things have to be omitted and certain details changed to 'fit' with what 'works'. It isn't necessarily the case that that would seem more suited anyway.
Well, of course they are... you can see that right here! The point is that it doesn't say as such in the book, therefore she was not obligated to make them African American. That was a choice made specifically for the film. In my opinion, that doesn't work for Rue.
@DrownedBeliefs I dnt get what you are saying. Suzzane Collins, the author of the Hunger Games, clearly stated that she made Rue black when writing the book. How you invisioned her otherwise is up to you, but they didnt change her race for this movie. Peoples mind are conditioned now to assume everyone is white in a book unless clearly told otherwise. Thresh was different, why? Because he was the dumbass violent tribute, so of course everyone was conditioned to see him as black
Feel free to provide a link for that at any point... I don't think I've ever heard anything about her stating that WHILE writing the book. The book merely says 'dark skinned', as I've said, not African American as these actors are. No, people aren't 'conditioned' to believe that, they make a logical assumption based on a number of factors, including their own race and what the general race statistics of their own country are. Get off your politically correct high-horse.
@DrownedBeliefs Clear as day. And it is true. They dont base it off there own race. Im latino and I picture everyone to be white. Thats just how it is. If the lead role is not racialy sensitive, it will always go to a white person. Will Smith and Denzel are the only exceptions. There are dozens of Rom Coms every year. All played by two white leads unless its about the race. How often do you see a black person in a Rom Com like Hitch or action like I am legend. Never!
Fair enough, I take your point about what she intended, I myself just didn't envision her that way; nothing wrong with developing your own idea of a character, right?
I think that's because these films are produced by white directors in white countries. We could easily look at any Bollywood film and wonder why there are no white actors, but I think that answer, too, would be axiomatic. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Minorities are minorities by definition, y'know.
@DrownedBeliefs Yea But these films are mostly produced by americans and america is the appidamy of multi culture. Not just white. I just want to see a movie for once where a black or asian can star in a lead role as not a Black person or an asian person but just a person. A role where you can replace the race of the lead and it will not change the story at all. Thats about 90% of films. (Where the leads race does not matter) And by default, those roles go to white people....or Will Smith.
But isn't it wrong to allocate someone a role not based on ability or suitability, but (assuming it is a role where you can replace the race of the lead) based on RACE? That's positive discrimination, which is an inherently racist concept. Shoving a black actor into a role for political correctness reasons over a white person, even if the white person is far more talented at the role, has to be wrong. Of COURSE minorities shouldn't get EQUAL representation; there aren't as many!
@DrownedBeliefs I never said they should get a role because they're a minority. But its obvious that they already are allocating people to a role based on race. I refuse to believe that every signal lead is played by a white person because in every case they are clearly the best acting choice. I am against affirmative action. I dont believe a black person should get a role because of their race. Matter of fact thats what i'm against. Give them a role because they earned it
Well, I could easily say that I refuse to accept that the decision to include minorities at all; I mean, how often have you seen an advert with an equal ratio of men to women, where someone is asian, someone is african american, someone is latino or something and of course, the generic white person? Me personally? All the time. Look at pretty much any advert, this is always the case. Do you think THEY are allocated based on ability and that it isn't an active choice?
@DrownedBeliefs Thats different. A commercial is a commercial. And Its ok to have a black guy in a movie as long as hes not the lead role. Its funny to have a black or Asian best friend. Its cool and it gives of the illusion of equality. It dosen't matter as long as they arn't the main character. Ads appeal to everyone ofevery race. So different races come into play. In movies, white lead is the safe choice to bring in all audiences. Black and its a "Black movie". Asian, must be kung fu
@SlyGlacier If you have read the book, it is pretty obvious that the tributes (Thresh and Rue) from District 11 are black.
In fact, when Katniss visits District 11 during her Victor Tour in the second book, she sees most people in District 11 are black. District 11 is a black district; it is also either the poorest or second poorest district after District 12.
Unless, are you suggesting changing the race of Thresh and Rue from black (in the book) to white (in the movie)? Why?
@DrownedBeliefs it doesn't say katniss is whtie either......AND it says dark skin and curly hair...dark eye....probably means black...or something of that sorts...
@DrownedBeliefs If you have read the book, it is pretty obvious that the tributes (Thresh and Rue) from District 11 are black.
In fact, when Katniss visits District 11 during her Victor Tour in the second book, she sees most people in District 11 are black. District 11 is a black district; it is also either the poorest or second poorest district after District 12.
Most importantly, Suzanne Collins.was involved in the casting process. She wrote the first script for the movie as well.
@linkaren123 your probably one of few who thought that i think you rushed over certain details. Thresh and Rue ar both from district 11 where the people of certain district look a certain way like how they describe the people from the seam. So if you say thresh looks perfect (a black guy) why would Rue be white when she is described as having dark skin whith dark brown eyes. I see Rue perfectly in that little girl. The author also says they are from african decent. So reread her description.
Gosh people need to pay attention to the book, Rue is dark skinned just like it said on the book! Anyways, Rue is adorable and is perfect! :D Can't wait :)
At least the black kids aren't the FIRST ones to die...

i find it disheartening when looking up fan art for Rue to see many people portray her as Caucasian when it clearly states that she has dark skin in the book. Amandla looks the part not only in terms of physical description but in character as well. There's something very haunting and angelic about her, which suits her perfectly as Rue.
danagirl23 2 months ago 4

Mario333555 2 months ago
To all you noobs commenting about you didn't know RUE was black, or the author didn't say she was black, is because the author isn't a dumb ass fixated on race like you guys. the author doesn't have to say african american, the book is set in the future, all aspects of race have been probably been wiped out or are no longer relevant. So the author justs describes what she looks like, just like she describes KATINESS. The author never says Katniss is white either!

NO! I'm not gonna be able to take it! If you read the book, you know I have a good reason!

Wow two of the actors arent white and now some "fans" arent as excited for the movie. Really???
Just get over it. They are not going to change the cast to please you and if you look in the book, Thresh and Rue have dark olive skin.
If you dont like the casting, 3 words. Get Over It.
AllyCarterPJOFan 2 months ago 3
Thresh and Rue are supposed to be black. District 11's chief industry is agriculture, which would make most sense if it was placed in the south. Nowadays there are a lot of African-Americans in the southern region of the US, in the future it probably wouldn't be any different. I have no problem with them black or white. Quit your bitchin'.
SarcasmIsKey100 3 months ago 2
I thought Thresh was white no offense to anyone. I don't think I'm as excited to watch the movie now.
SlipperyIcicle 3 months ago
@SlipperyIcicle No they said in the book that he was black
ChinchillasForever 3 months ago
@ChinchillasForever They probably did, I just pictured him differently. This is why I don't like books being made into movies, the characters image is never the same as you image it.
SlipperyIcicle 3 months ago
@SlipperyIcicle Aww I know what you mean! They can't really pick characters to please everyone. I'm really upset with the way Effie looked in the trailer. So either way I'm gonna go see it and hopefully it will be ok because the books are amazing
ChinchillasForever 3 months ago
@ChinchillasForever I know, it's difficult to please everyone. I know, I'm not sure if they said her age in the book, but I kept picturing her way younger looking. Yeah, they are totally awesome, I hope the movie has alot of the good moments from the book, especially the one where Thresh kills you know who.
SlipperyIcicle 3 months ago
@SlipperyIcicle I'm gonna have a mental breakdown when I see that little girl die!!!!
MissRandomReviewer 2 months ago
@MissRandomReviewer Me too, it's really sad. I wish she hadn't of died and some how won with you know who.
SlipperyIcicle 2 months ago 3
Please tell me that was a joke. Even if you don't think Thresh is black (even though he is) don't let it effect how excited you are for the movie. The movies are never going to be just like the books, we ALL need to except that. Besides I think they're both perfect.
mitchellgr 2 months ago
@mitchellgr It's not the fact that his character is black, he could be eletric blue and it wouldn't really change my excitment. The movie is coming out way different then the way I pictured it, which I should of expected. The stuff they are changing is making me less excited, like how there is no Madge in the movie. I know she is not a big character in the book, but she gave Katniss that pin and the pin belonged to a past tribute, now that will be changed.

DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs Rue is supposed to be black. Of course the black one seams more suited
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
@SlyGlacier
DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs We'll the author clearly stated in an interview that rue and Thresh we're African American
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
@SlyGlacier
Well, of course they are... you can see that right here! The point is that it doesn't say as such in the book, therefore she was not obligated to make them African American. That was a choice made specifically for the film. In my opinion, that doesn't work for Rue.
DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs I dnt get what you are saying. Suzzane Collins, the author of the Hunger Games, clearly stated that she made Rue black when writing the book. How you invisioned her otherwise is up to you, but they didnt change her race for this movie. Peoples mind are conditioned now to assume everyone is white in a book unless clearly told otherwise. Thresh was different, why? Because he was the dumbass violent tribute, so of course everyone was conditioned to see him as black
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
@SlyGlacier
DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs Clear as day. And it is true. They dont base it off there own race. Im latino and I picture everyone to be white. Thats just how it is. If the lead role is not racialy sensitive, it will always go to a white person. Will Smith and Denzel are the only exceptions. There are dozens of Rom Coms every year. All played by two white leads unless its about the race. How often do you see a black person in a Rom Com like Hitch or action like I am legend. Never!
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
@SlyGlacier
DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs Yea But these films are mostly produced by americans and america is the appidamy of multi culture. Not just white. I just want to see a movie for once where a black or asian can star in a lead role as not a Black person or an asian person but just a person. A role where you can replace the race of the lead and it will not change the story at all. Thats about 90% of films. (Where the leads race does not matter) And by default, those roles go to white people....or Will Smith.
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
@SlyGlacier
DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs I never said they should get a role because they're a minority. But its obvious that they already are allocating people to a role based on race. I refuse to believe that every signal lead is played by a white person because in every case they are clearly the best acting choice. I am against affirmative action. I dont believe a black person should get a role because of their race. Matter of fact thats what i'm against. Give them a role because they earned it
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
@SlyGlacier
DrownedBeliefs 3 months ago
@DrownedBeliefs Thats different. A commercial is a commercial. And Its ok to have a black guy in a movie as long as hes not the lead role. Its funny to have a black or Asian best friend. Its cool and it gives of the illusion of equality. It dosen't matter as long as they arn't the main character. Ads appeal to everyone ofevery race. So different races come into play. In movies, white lead is the safe choice to bring in all audiences. Black and its a "Black movie". Asian, must be kung fu
SlyGlacier 3 months ago
I don't see why a black person shouldn't get a lead role. We're all people here aren't we?
mitchellgr 2 months ago
@SlyGlacier If you have read the book, it is pretty obvious that the tributes (Thresh and Rue) from District 11 are black.
In fact, when Katniss visits District 11 during her Victor Tour in the second book, she sees most people in District 11 are black. District 11 is a black district; it is also either the poorest or second poorest district after District 12.
Unless, are you suggesting changing the race of Thresh and Rue from black (in the book) to white (in the movie)? Why?
ktchong 3 months ago

Most importantly, Suzanne Collins.was involved in the casting process. She wrote the first script for the movie as well.

@linkaren123 your probably one of few who thought that i think you rushed over certain details. Thresh and Rue ar both from district 11 where the people of certain district look a certain way like how they describe the people from the seam. So if you say thresh looks perfect (a black guy) why would Rue be white when she is described as having dark skin whith dark brown eyes. I see Rue perfectly in that little girl. The author also says they are from african decent. So reread her description.
