They are supposed to but the freight rails do not give it to them usually. I think though the feds are cracking down to make sure this doesn't happen.
I've been down here to mericopa couple of times and its not really a very long drive from Phoenix to get here. I didn't notice that Amtrak exist here until I drove across this track and saw the station.
We use the sunset limited to go to losangeles great family fun. The kids are in awe i wish it would still pass through phoenix so we woundnt have to drive so far.
Well I don't know if this will happen, but the SMART team's goal is to do the following. Restore the Sunset service east of New Orleans, Restore the Phenoix station that was closed down, and make the Sunset service daily.
Do you go under google groups and typed sunset un-limited? The SMART team stands for Sunset Marketing And Revitalization Team and was formed at a meeting on January 19 I believe of 2008. They are basically a team to help restore the Sunset Limited and make it a better service.
I've taken the train out of this station twice in the last year. Once to San Antonio and the other time to New Orleans. First time the train was 2 hours late, the next time it was 4 1/2 hours late. Love to travel by train but always, always anticipate delays. Thanks for this WN - maybe next time I'll be as lucky as you were here.
Ever since Kummant wrote his letter to the UP, the Sunset's timekeeping has improved. I remember a period a few years back when 10 and 15 hour delays were common, and then, of course, there was that infamous 40-something hour delay.
I'm in Yuma (next station west) and I can tell by the train status information vs. when the train actually gets here eastbound that a lot of the delays are between Palm Springs and here. Sometimes two hours pass between the estimated arrival time and when it actually gets here, with no new estimate ever given. People boarding or picking someone up at the station in Yuma have to be good friends with 'Julie' on the Amtrak 800 number.
Amtrak, why must they rent track it is a Government org why shouldn't they receive first priority.

I took the Sunset Limited to Fort Lauderdale and back a few years ago! It was fun, fun time. I rode first class with a sleeper and it included food.

Interesting that the Genesis unit has a "double" air pop off instead of one.

adam1234a 5 years ago
if you get there early enough, the crew is usually chillin out on the platform, so you might be able to start up a friendly chat.
