Can you get the headaches just from the fumes? I would where the nitrile gloves because of the insanely dangerous acids but I am not keen on gettting massive headaches. How long do they last?

It can last up to 12 hours. Nitroglycerin isn't that volatile, so the fumes will not cause a headache so quickly. When it touches the skin, it gets absorbed quite fast. So it is advisable to wear surgical gloves or similar while neutralizing and purifying nitro.

The worst headache I had from nitro lasted about 6 hours, apparently some got on my hands.

my dad told me this story where he snuk into his college labratory and made some nitroglycerin and attatched it on a platform beneeth a hydrogen baloon. Well aparently the wind toold it well away from campus where it exploded over a lake. The next day there were reports of u.f.o.s in the paper. of course now if you did this you would be "terrorist" but that was 40 years ago

It was indeed sucked into nitrocellulose, I was trying to make a gelatin, but the nitro still contained to much water. This was my first try at nitro.

make dynamite with left over NG and soak that insto NC and then put nitrate on it to dissolve :) mix it up and put a detinator in it and BOOM ! :D

for the blasting cap you used "APNC?" i am assuming the AP stands for acetone peroxide, but what would NC stand for?? nitrocellulose? and if thats the case, why didnt you just use pure AP (higher VoD than nitrocellulose)?

Yes, the NC stands for nitrocellulose. I wanted to do some tests with AP putty, so I used that while I had it lying around.

The advantage of AP putty is that it forms a solid after drying, so you don't have to press the explosive in the detonator. It's kind of castable.

I am not familiar with a black cat firecracker, but according to Uncle Fester pure nitro can be detonated with a strong firecracker.

you can,but, you ll need to mix the nitro with something porous like nitrocellulose or wood pulp

this way you can even light it with matches

The velocity of detonation (VoD) of nitroglycerin is about 7700m/s whereas PETN has a VoD of 8300m/s. And IIRC PETN creates a larger volume of gas during detonation then nitroglycerin does.

So PETN is more powerful.

xD thats nothink about plasma the camera creates the picture from top to down and infrared is violet/blue on cameras (bad IR filter) so the very first moment it goes off thers a lot of ir light and thats the blue stuff about it ,

if you dont belive just take a controler for a tv and push a butom while aiming on a camcoder u will see a blue/violet flight ;)

Work with small amounts, have a bucket of cold water ready, study a decent synthesis and work with care.

If the glycerin is added slowly and the temperature is kept below 10°C, there shouldn't be any problems.

original dynamite was only nitroglycerin soaked up by sawdust, and Nobel, the inventor made millions off it. For any beginner in here, just soak up your nitroglycerin in some damned sawdust, and you got dynamite. That simple.

You can find it at the local pharmacy. Its usually found in hand lotions, but its sold pure aswell.

The Nitroglycerin used in medical treatment is stable, its mixed with a different composition to give it its stability. The pure form of Nitroglycerin is an explosive, a very sensitive explosive, but the effects are no different if your body has absorbed it.

I work for a blasting company and the dyno we use is nitrolglycerin based. Hate working with the stuff, expecially on hot days when the dynamite sweats. Gives you a massive headache if you dont use gloves when handling it

The launching of a potato is quite gentle in a spud gun, so I don't think it would detonate. But I wouldn't take the risk.

I just don't see how you would inject enough nitro in a potato and how it would detonate upon impact because it would be dispersed in the potato. Unless you put the nitro inside a little vial in the potato, but thats just impractical.

It's also very dangerous to try and launch a projectile containing pure nitro. A more insensitive secondary explosive would be required.
