I saw his right hand stick go flying on the Johnny Carson show. He calmly reached to front of his kit to get the spare, all the while doing a left hand roll. Truly the master.
I miss Buddy's incredible energy when he was cookin' with his band and i was lucky to see him one in a live concert. We all have heard about his tirade, tantrums, aggressive nature, possibly related to the brain tumor that took him out. But how he could play like that night after night like a nuclear reactor ready for a serious meltdown is beyond understanding. The guy was like a well oiled machine, all the gears spinning in perfect sync.
If him and Keith Moon are not hanging out in Heaven then I don;t know what to believe. Thanks for uploading. A master toward the end of his career, still playing like he was in his prime.
Anyone spot the broken stick at 1:54? No problem to Buddy though - he just keeps going then has a look round to his left to see if he's blinded the bass player!! Ultimate professional!!!
That's the late great Milt Hinton on bass - He also did a lot of work on the Dick Cavett show - upright was his forte. He was a real gentleman. I met him at the Jazzmobile in NY during the 70's.

Correct me if I am wrong; but this was taken off of the 1982 Montreal Jazz Festival DVD, yes? The solo here is amazing, as were all of his solo's.

At 1:09, a few seconds after those blazing paradiddledidles, the sitting bass player says, "Wow, that motherf---er is fast"
