You people that are calling this inhumane need to get on a horse and try to gather them yourself. Half the time they are gathering these horses because they are taking over where our wildlife are and also starving to death, is that humane??????? All of you commenting negatively have obviously never been there and know nothing about animals.
@amberlynn272003 It's the cattle and "livestock" interests that are responsible. There are 200 cows for every wild horse. This is supposed to be protected land for the horses not ranchers.
Wildlife? Check out how many species are hunted, trapped and poisoned --- Mostly again, to "protect" livestock.
it so sad that this proud horses aren't protected under are laws. they are the most buitaful anmalis in the whole wide. i love the mustangs stand for. they so that amazing grace is not song but it is real. They been here longer then we have and we repay them buy taking them from their home. that ain't right at all. this song is so ture about the WILD HORSES.
America has made this OKAY......what does that say about us? I wish these guys would rot in hell...the last comment was made 9 mths ago! Who cares now? no one...that's who, and that's who will keep caring..It's one thing to say "oh that's wrong", it's another to stand up and say No! This is wrong and I will be damned if it will happen again!..we can say all we want, but until someone does something, it will keep being like this..guaranteed
I agree with all comments, but they NEED YOUR VOICE TO SPREAD the WORD as to what is happening to them during these roundups....PLEASE HELP THEM.....SHARE WHAT YOU SEE AND HEAR ....the wild horses and burros will thank you
ive roedeod before and stoped but i cant stand cowboys they are mostly the stupidest men ive ever meet, cold hearted and cocky, they think there all that, thank good they were tight pants, we would have more of these creaters, keep it up they shove there balls up there ass
All you haters on here , why don't you go watch some gory videos and be happy. You are the type of ppl. who would enjoy this carnage. To the person who says who wants a horse with no papers you are a moron. You create problems like puppy mills SO YOUR INBRED ANIMAL CAN HAVE PAPERS! Help us, help them don't be part of the problem . The rest of ya need some mental health help.
You stupid peices of shit humans, get off of your lazy asses and tell the horses to stop and get the mare up!What are you stupid!GET HER UP!GOD YOUR IDIOTS!!!!
It's sad that this mare had a distressing experience but seriously, if you are concerned about animal welfare, all species of livestock besides horses undergo infinitely worse suffering every day. You should put some of that energy into reforming the meat industry. Maybe along the way you'd actually benefit your feral horse cause by decreasing the demand for beef.
@Sharieflove You dont know anything about this subject. They're Not wild horses and they don't get dumped in a hole. get your facts before you write shit.
asshat, perhaps you should grow a brain or perhaps a heart, this is to sharieflove. What a moron, clueless so to speak. Shame on you!!! Goes to show, the blustering blind leading the willing.
...with the mares, possibly causing harm to the herd and especially the mares. if the younger horses lead the herds, it could result in more traffic collisions on roadways or more contact with ppl. if anything, they should sterilize a certain percentage of younger stallions and colts before they have their own herds so that their is still some to lead the herds, but less that will be reproducing and increasing populations.
they acttually dont have slaughterhouses or permit the sale of horses to ppl who are going to take the horses out of the country to foreign slaughter houses anymore in america. and the way ppl want to control wild equine populations is bad, they want to sterilize older stallions. its a bad idea because the wisdom they acquire thru the years keeps the heards safe, as well as they control the younger stallions. without the older ones, the younger ones ccould take over heards and breed rampantly ..
It is heartbreaking! I don't know how we are ever going to wake up Washington in order to stop it! End the BLM's roundups and their continuous assault on our wild horses and burros before there they all been taken from the wild!
Idiots! the BLM has a bunch of bloodless, soul-less robots doing their bidding. "Bring in EVERY horse and burro on the plains" We need to pen them up in too-small pens and watch them panic and kill each other tryng to get out." "/we don't care about them, just get em off the PUBLIC land so we can strip mine it and rent it out to cattle farmers" "The cost and sense of this action- doesn't matter. It's not our money"
yeah but most arn't sold on they got to the slaughter house its a well know fact.... i would buy them all if i could, they are pricless every one of them is priceless :(
They are WILD horses. They don't respect a fence. Nothing looked wrong with these photos. You couldn't stop the herd anyway, once they got started through the gate. Wild horses cost our government millions every year. And they are not worth anything. Who wants to buy a wild horse with no papers, probably 5 or 6 and you can never sell it, only give it away. Lot of work for no profit.
The is a strong need to get rid of the agents that do not give a crap about the horses they could careless if they are hurt, maimed, killed. If they did they wouldn't/couldn't just stand by and let this happen. Roundups should be done without helicopters, atv's, people who don't know horses. This is cruel, point blank, to just stand there and let a horse be trampled to death cause the herd is so so scared.
It is a horrible situation. There are about 1200 wild horses from Adobe Town and Salt Wells in Canon City, Colorado now available for adoption, and the fee is only $125 and they are offering free shipping within 150 miles. The next adoption is this coming Friday, January 7th.
DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT HORSES BUT ANYONE COULD SEE IF YOU RAN TO MANY HORSES INTO SUCH A NARROW SHOOT THAT SOMETHING WRONG WOULD HAPPEN. CANT THEY GIVE THESE HORSES TO PEOPLE WHO WANT THEM? IF THEY ARE WILLING TO GO AND HELP ROUND UM UP?
I've run horses before and it was nothing like this. Granted we weren't running wild horses, just range horses but damn it we weren't this stupid. This job can be done by three buckaroos on horse back, no helicopter. The problem is these guys are all scared of the horses, note all of the unnecessary corrals. Wild horse traps from long ago looked nothing like this. Its sad to see such a poor imitation of the dying art of wild horse hunting and its worse to see this mistreatment of horses.
thats just cruel the poor young fillies and colts dont even get to try being wild...those men think theyre cowboys ya well there not no where in the wourld is there a cowboy whos cruel to his horses so who ever flies a stupid airplane over top a horse u go turn yourself into a wild horse and see what it feels like to lose all your freedom and be chased by a giand horse eating bird and well il stop now but i could think of many more things of how scary it would be to have this done to you.
It is a grand lie that all of America's wild horses will starve if not rounded up and put in feedlots to 'save' them. Almost all the wild horses are very fat and healthy until rounded up, and then many suffer severe health issues from injuries sustained during capture, stress, terror, depression, transitioning from wild grasses to domestic hay, and from being fed moldy or otherwise bad feed. Don't let BLM (Butchers of the Last Mustangs) fool you for a second. Look at the photos and videos.
Classeair, sadly you could not be more wrong. The BLM does not care one whit about America's wild horses. They are the 'step children' of that huge agency, and their plan is to remove them from land that they will use for cattle grazing and oil and gas wells. There is a lot of solid data available about that now. Trusting BLM is trust very much misplaced. Your children won't have wild horses to see if they have their way. So sorry.
if you do not control the numbers of mustang by moving then to a different location or adopt them to a new home the mustang will run out of what little food that they have to eat and starve I have seen colts stand over a dead maire and wait for her to stand so it can get milk for it to live do I mind if the mustang have to run a bit my answer is no I know the BLM will do what it takes to have wild mustangs for my children to see
STOP IT!!! Never to run again, Never to be free again... Just STOP IT!!
you selfish, stupid, lying fools!!!
WHAT the HELL is the matter with all of you?
THANKS SO MUCH, president obama... these roundups are in your hands and we will never forget any of this! You have the power and promised us HOPE and you continue to play golf and let our horses die.
This is a terrible and horrible picture you will be associated with, man of NO WORDS and much JIVE.
Stop it! Never to run again, Never to be free again... Just STOP IT you selfish, stupid, lying fools!!!

what a disgrace to our nation that we let this still go on. Please HELP our Horses today. Sign petitions, forward information to people. Tell the media this is what we want to know about. We have to demand that the BLM be stopped NOW!!!Over 40,000 mustang are now in holding pens with no shelter, waiting, to be shipped to slaughter. Please act today.
Where in the HELL do they find these cowboys. Ha they are not cowboys, Cowboys ( real) ones know how to respect horses. This is truely sickening to me. Why is all I can say, why must the beautiful creatures suffer??????
This is a disgrace to the people involved in those roundups who call themselves cowboys who sat there and watched that beautiful, young, free mare get trampled. Cant they seriously control how many horses are pushed into that traler at a time and at a safe and manageable speed in which it is supervised by REAL horse lovers!!!!!!
@DrDavePNH88 Were did you pick her up from? What makes me so GD mad is the people just breeding to see what the hell they come up with then don’t like them and push them off to some one else that pushes them to someone else till the horse has so many bad habits that no one wants it. Do you want to complain and bitch about something? Complain about the back yard breeders!
There is NO REASON to RUSH the ROUND-UPS like this!! Why the SPEED AND horrible distance BLM?? Why can't BLM and CONTRACTOR "ROUNDUP INC" get some lessons from PROs on how to move animals in a calm and SAFER manner?? MY GOD the BLM contractor has been running wild horses from the days the helicoptors ran wild horses off cliffs in their hometown in UTAH??? There should be NO INJURIES at all in these round-ups!!! SLOW DOWN AND PREVENT INJURY you YAHOOs!! STOP KILLING MOSTANGS!!
Those ARENT cowboys, they're federal agents. Damn the BLM and DAMN Salazar the slaughter Czar. They no nothing about horses. These round-ups are illegal. The BLM by congressional law is stated to "protect" and manage... this is hardley that and Salazar is asking for more millions to continue this BS. It's high-time to round up Kenny and some BLM scank for slaughter.
The stupid "Cowboys" take all the time they want and just keep swinging their ropes, to get the horses to keep going in. And why can't they get the round up shoots onto the trailer to be bigger?? I just hope those horses were adopted to good homes
The chutes need to be progessively narrower the closer to the trailer. Sometimes with mustangs it is best to just back off and let thing calm down and then start over. These horses are a prey animal and man is the preditor in their eyes. As a BLM Mustang adopter of 8, I can tel you the mustang horses are a very trusting animal once they trust you. Many of the anti BLM videos are edited to show just the bad stuff. I am not involved whatso ever with the BLM, just a mustang lover.
If people would get the facts and not the soap box information on many issuses, this world would be a lot better. The BLM Mustangs are really unique animals. Once they trust you and they know that you are not going to eat them, they become very close friends and insist on being touched and handled and look to you for guidance. It is too bad that even in the horse industry there are people who call the mustang a dink. Yet these same people buy horses with the same sire 6 times in 5 generations.
I bet they took their sweet f***ing time getting to her eh? If they even bothered with her at all!!! The mustang's should be LEFT ALONE! They're wouldn't be a problem if everyone just let them be...
We have all that public land -BUT BLM has our horses on private land information given by Mr. Nick, former feedlot owner hired by the BLM, the reason BLM held round up during the winter months instead of in Sept , is that they hired a buddy to receive the Calico horses, (to fatten his pockets with our tax dollars) and this buddy did not have his feedlot even built or ready for the horses until Dec. They don't protect our public lands , wildlife & water -but profit illegally
You need to watch the program "Stampede to Oblivion" it pretty much tells the full story behind what the BLM is doing to Nevada's wild mustangs. If you are interested, I will be more than happy to send you the link. I also have the bll statement - the one sent to the senate - that throughly explains why wild mustangs are native wildlife.
The point is, cattle have more of a negative impact on the environment then wild horses. Especially 8 million cattle. And if Nevada really is full of springs, then why is the BLM complaining about horses dieing of dehydration?
In fact, reducing horse populations in a given area has a negligible effect on range conditions: after massive wild horse roundups, herd areas show little or no improvement, especially in instances when cattle numbers remain the same (or increase).
In order to remove wild horses from public lands, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has claimed that horses are destroying critical habitat, competing for grazing lands, and overpopulating. But reports by the General Accounting Office and the National Academy of Sciences dispute such claims: BLM has never presented any evidence that horses destroy habitat, nor that their population levels are what it claims they are.
The National Academy of Sciences does not employee field agents year around. But they don't just go into the field for a few days and then leave. They employee field agents for years so they can determine the impact surrounding wildlife has on the ecosystem. Right now, they probably don't have any scientist in Nevada. But wild horse advocates have been trying to get them to come back but, it cost a great deal.
And, as to how many, they probably send a team. More than one but, probably less than five. It all depends on what they're researching, how difficult it is obtain data, and where they are researching.
I think you should try to consider that wild horses may actually have a positive impact on their environemnt.. Cows have no upper front teeth, only a thick pad: they graze by wrapping their long tongues around grass and pulling on it. If the ground is wet, they will pull out the grass by the roots, preventing it from growing back. Horses have both upper and lower incisors and graze by "clipping the grass," similar to a lawn mower, allowing the grass to easily grow back.
A team of Russian scientists, part of a cooperative venture with the United States, came in 2001 to study the effects of grazing animals on riparian areas in Nevada. They tested streams for nutrients and examined the desert and Sierra to learn techniques to improve the environment of their homeland.
what do stream nutrients and animals have in common... i don't c how animals put nutrients into the water. oh they waste in it right...? is that y they call mustangs shitters?
Well, if you don't know what nutrients and animals have in common, then let me give you a little science lesson. Nutrients are substances which help plants grow, much like vitamins help us grow. You with me? Two chemicals, nitrogen and phosphorus, are important to plant growth. Lawn and plant fertilizer and animal waste (including human sewage) contain nitrogen and phosphorus. Too much nutrients mean too much plant growth, especially of algae (microscopic floating plants).
When there is too much algae, the water becomes cloudy and blocks light to underwater grasses, which are called submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Algae can also grow on SAV leaves, like moss on a tree. However too much algae can further block light and kill the grasses. When algae die, they sink to the bottom and decompose in ta process that removes oxygen from the water. Fish and other aquatic organisms cant exist in water with low dissolved oxygen levels.
Like I said, cattle camp around any kind of water source. Cattle are famous for defecating in water sources all all kinds. Let's say a stream since that type is on your mind. When animal waste enters, it uses the available dissolved oxygen creat ammonia. The combination of low oxygen, ammonia, and warm tempatures is detrimental to aquatic life. Nutrients from animal waste can also make the water cloudy and green which futhure inhibites aquatic life. You do you get it?
No, cattle should be called shitters for defecating in water sources. Wild mustangs aren't doing that because; unlike cattle, they don't camp around water sources.
The scientists found that cows, which tend to camp around water sources, cause more damage to the stream banks than wild horses, which tend to drink and move on: "When we saw horses drinking from creeks, we didn't see much impact except for hoof prints. The water looked clean, had good overhanging branches and there was no sign of erosion on the banks. There was an abundance of insects and animals, including frogs and dragonflies and water-striders."
your all screwed up. horses get posessive of water sources! cattle feed out for feed! their cows if they camped out hey would starve! creeks are not the same as springs either. which is what nevada being a desert mostly has!
I am not screwed up. And horses don't get posessive of water sources. They drink and move on. Horses graze up to ten miles from water sources. Cattle, on the other hand, stay right next to the water. Areas where there abundance of water are fenced in strictly for cattle. When this happens, wild horses die of dehydration. These fences of purposely put up by the BLM who've already claimed they could have a negative impact on horses. I've seen dead horses lying next to these fences. It's funny.
Oops! The, "it's funny" was meant as a continuation of another paragraph. I went over my limit and thought I delete the entire post. I guess not. Sorry. I didn't mean that it's funny to see dead horses. Goodness...
It's funny. The BLM push wild horses to live in inhospitable places where the water is scarse and the food not has rich as is it should, then they say the horses are dieing of dehydration and starvation.
Environementalists have determined that in Nevada, home of the vast majority of America's remaining wild horses, the herds have little impact on the ecosystem compared with the hundreds of thousands of cattle that also roam the Nevada range. The Western Watersheds Project acknowledges that "the main cause of degradation of public lands in the arid west is livestock use and not wild horses."
do your research. the mustangs are not overpopulated. they are not diseased. and they are not starving. these are all lies told by the blm to justify the treatment given to these horses. if there is an overpopulation problem on the range, it lies with the cattle. there are 80 million cattle grazing on the lands. compare that to only 20 thousand wild horses.
This brings up a bigger problem. Mustangs are in peril, there population is growing drastically, from what I understand, and are ruining their habitat in addition health problems that over population brings. The BLM needs to develop a better management plan. They need to start with an accurate count of them, there are reports that they underestimated the population of the Mustangs.
Wild horses comprise a minute fraction of grazing animals on public lands, where they are outnumbered by cattle at least 200 to 1. The 1971 Act states that, in a given area, a certain amount of vegetation may be eaten as forage. Only when that amount is exceeded are there too many animals. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has overwhelmingly favored cattle in setting appropriate wild horse population levels, resulting in indiscriminate removal of horses and burros from public lands.
3) Wild horses are not suffering from starvation and drought. Mismanagement is at the root of most of these problems. Despite federal protection, wild horses have been relegated to the most inhospitable areas of the range. Still, they have adapted and survived; most horses rounded up by the BLM are well-fed and healthy. However, public land fencing often prevents horses from accessing scarce natural water sources and disrupts their widespread grazing patterns.
5) Wild horses are not responsible for over-grazing the lands. The main cause of degradation of public lands is livestock use, not wild horses. Cows graze within a mile of water, while wild horses are highly mobile, grazing from five to ten miles from water, at higher elevations, on steeper slopes, and in more rugged terrain.
6) A congressionally-mandated study by the National Academy of Sciences found that, in one year, livestock consumed 70% of grazing resources on public lands, while wild horses and burros consumed less than 5%.
7) Wild horses do not double in size every five years and they DO have natural predators. In its 1982 study, the National Academy of Sciences found annual rates of increase of 10% or less in wild horse populations, a far cry from the 20% increase relied upon by the BLM to justify its removal program. Wild horses do have predators, in the form of mountain lions and bears. In 2004 for instance, only 1 out of 28 foals survived in Montanas Pryor Mountain area.
Mountain lions kill both and babies from both species are easy to kill; nevertheless, mountains lions do kill foals and foals do make up a large portion of their diet. Wild mustang foals are very important to a mountain lions diet and the absence of such prey can have a negative impact on other prey species. In the case of the Coyote Canyon horses in the Anza Borrega National Park (California).
i know for a FACT!! that in north western nevada near the calico complex that your statement is not true!!! i know several gov. trappers, along with gov. and private lion hunters. and when they cut open a lion they don't find horse remains. maybe here or there but 9x out of 10 it's going to be deer, or bh sheep!
kwhorseluver, mountain lions may not hunt foals near the calico complex. So what? That doesn't mean mountain lions don't hunt foals at all. I do know for a fact that mountain lions prey on Proyer Mountain mustangs and in Coyote Canyon horses in the Anza Borrega National Park (California). You and I aren't talking about a specific place here. Only that mountains lions, in general, do prey on wild horses. So there was absolutely nothing I said that wasn't true.
i'm sure they do hunt them. but the nevada mt lions main diet is not wild horse... it's mule deer! i'm sure this carries out to mt, ca, and ut. but i havn't been around lions in those areas so i can't be certain about that.
Just for the record, I do not rely on the BLM for data. I go to the National Academy of Sciences. Last year, BLM authorized a 300% increase in cattle grazing for the area- Calico-, and the building of a fence that BLM itself admitted might cut wild horses from their winter range and cause them to die.
Wild horses would also be locked out of the best pasture with the most abundant water during the driest time of the year. At the time, BLM justified its decision by arguing that wild horse populations in the area were minimal. A couple of months later, it came out with its puzzling claim of population explosion, setting the stage for this massive round-up.
Clearly, something here is amiss. Where did these 3,000 horses come from?
Many times after wild mustangs were "gathered" cattle would soon be seen having taken their place in areas wild horses onced grazed. If wild mustangs are overgrazing the lands, then why put cattle on the very range they are supposedly eating away? Right now, the BLM is currently being investiaged for misdeeds. So I really don't consider them a legitimate source.
But, I do wonder at the validly of such a claim. Why would mountain lions prey on wild mustangs in Caifornia and at the Montana/Nevada border - Pryor Mountain- and not in Calico, Nevada? Why hunt mostly big horn sheep? The BLM are currently giving mares the PZP shot and nerely 50% never come into season between 2001 and 2004. Perhaps that might be a cause?
no, all over nevada ... y would a lion want to fight with a mare when it can just rake down a deer. calico isn't ne different. i said north west nevada. before 2000 they had the same problems with lions and deer... not lions and horses.
You are right. Mountain lions do not hunt adult wild horses, but they have been documented to prey on foals who stray away from the heard. Mountain lions will stalk a band for quit some time till an opportunity presents itself. I've heard differently than you. I've heard that mountains prey on fouls frequently because; a clumsy foal is a lot easier to catch than an adult deer. But I do know that mountain lions do prey on foals a lot in the Pryor Mountains and in areas in California.
I never said that wild mustangs are their main diet. Only that foals make up a considerable portion of it. And when wild horses were removed from certain areas, other prey species were impacted negatively. Like in California. Perhaps there are less deer in California and at the Montana/Nevada border. I don't know what their habitate range is. But your comments are certainly interesting and I am taking them into consideration. I could very well be wrong about Nevada. I'm still lookin for info.
Low precentage of foals; therefore, not many mountain lions will hunt them, so you wouldn't see one - or very many - in a mountain lions stomach. Who knows, kwhorseluver. But what I said about the mountain lion predation in California, Montana/Nevada boarder is not untrue. Besides, you need to look at this thing as a whole. And, as a whole, mountain lions do prey on wild horse. Why Calico, Nevada is different I can't tell you.
After wild horses were all removed from the Park to increase big horn sheep population, bighorn sheep mortality actuality skyrocketed: mountain lions, wild horse predators, compensated the loss of one of their prey species by increasing their predation on other species. Neither you or I can say which species of prey a predator perfers. All I can say is that mountain lions prey on wild horses a great deal, but I don't know to the degree to which they prey on mule deer.
You are right. Not every place has bears, but Nevada, Montana, Idaho, California, and Wyoming - especially Nevada where the majority of our wild horses live - all do have bears. However, I do not know the degree to which they prey on foals. Coyotes also prey on foals as well by the way.
9) Wild horses are a reintroduced native wildlife species. Paleontological evidence shows that wild horses evolved on the North American continent over the course of some 1.6 million years. How they disappeared 11 to 13 thousand years ago, if in fact they actually ever became extinct here, is a mystery. When Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519, he brought horses from Spain. Others followed.
10) From these reintroduced animals came the great numbers of wild horses that eventually changed the culture of the Plains Indians. The Spanish horses soon adapted to the same ecological niche their native relatives had once thrived in. Long before the early settlers pioneered the West, they were here as a reintroduced, fully adapted wildlife species, 3 million strong.
after all this trauma, its amazing to me that they still let people adopt these horses. if i were a horse, i would never trust another human again after an experience like this
I think that if a horse is born in the wild, that is obviously where it's suppose to stay. That poor white horse..can't believe it was still alive after all of that!
Thank you Carol. Heartbreaking. Serious abuse/cruelty. Would be a felony. But the BLM writes own laws and rules. But today Is Horses on the Hill, 9/29/09, Washington, DC. We will join together w/a MAJOR public outcry across America. DC will listen!! BLM no longer "America's Dirty Secret." We have just begun!
We miss treated our first Native Americans (Indians)..Now it's the Mustangs turn?....Something has to happen to stop all of this...Please pray as well as contacting Washington..
I was sick after watching this. Why round them up, look at their condition they are doing just fine on their own. My feelings are there is a special place in hell for those who order these round ups and the one's who carry it out. Where the hell is "Peta" when these things happen?? Harrasing the pet animal population of course, start fighting for these creatures instead of making pet owners your target. People just make me sick these days.
I could cry at this and I am one who has shot a roundup and it was nothing like this one. I am heartbroken to learn the real facts of these round ups and to know of a rancher who houses these horses and they live pretty high on the hog. I can not support this. I want to know why in the hell are they rounding up more when they have 33,000 in holding that they may put to sleep despite the offer made by M. Pickens to create a sanctuary for them.
i have one of the weanlings that came out of this roundup. That was a very powerful, moving piece about the mustang's plight. I want you to know I have Odakota up here in Craig, Co, he is very loved and is the light of my life! He is so trusting and easy to work with! Soon I will get my certificate of ownership from the BLM, Thank You for advocating for these beautiful animals!
So sick and tired of this horrible crap! How many thousands of mustangs have the BLM rounded up and killed during their stupid "gathers" Why have the BLM never taken pictures and movies of every single round-up over the years.? why have the BLM never posted PUBLIC stats of every single mustang they have rounded up? They are ALL just horse killers!! criminals! they should be charged with crimes of abuse!!
If Madelyn Pickens with all her power and all her money cannot get the BLM and Salazar to listen to HER, how can ONE of us matter ? I am sobbing from this realistic video and I will pass it around to everyone I can - and I want to round up those "cowboys" the same way!!!
them ppl should be gang raped and then trampled. fuck them.

Nattrunlover 10 months ago
...with the mares, possibly causing harm to the herd and especially the mares. if the younger horses lead the herds, it could result in more traffic collisions on roadways or more contact with ppl. if anything, they should sterilize a certain percentage of younger stallions and colts before they have their own herds so that their is still some to lead the herds, but less that will be reproducing and increasing populations.
blackpheonix1254 11 months ago
they acttually dont have slaughterhouses or permit the sale of horses to ppl who are going to take the horses out of the country to foreign slaughter houses anymore in america. and the way ppl want to control wild equine populations is bad, they want to sterilize older stallions. its a bad idea because the wisdom they acquire thru the years keeps the heards safe, as well as they control the younger stallions. without the older ones, the younger ones ccould take over heards and breed rampantly ..

IJustHadAGreatIdea 1 year ago
Classeair, sadly you could not be more wrong. The BLM does not care one whit about America's wild horses. They are the 'step children' of that huge agency, and their plan is to remove them from land that they will use for cattle grazing and oil and gas wells. There is a lot of solid data available about that now. Trusting BLM is trust very much misplaced. Your children won't have wild horses to see if they have their way. So sorry.

horseangel1000 2 years ago
The chutes need to be progessively narrower the closer to the trailer. Sometimes with mustangs it is best to just back off and let thing calm down and then start over. These horses are a prey animal and man is the preditor in their eyes. As a BLM Mustang adopter of 8, I can tel you the mustang horses are a very trusting animal once they trust you. Many of the anti BLM videos are edited to show just the bad stuff. I am not involved whatso ever with the BLM, just a mustang lover.

WisePillow 2 years ago
The point is, cattle have more of a negative impact on the environment then wild horses. Especially 8 million cattle. And if Nevada really is full of springs, then why is the BLM complaining about horses dieing of dehydration?
WisePillow 2 years ago
where did u get 8mil cattle? and i didn't say nv was full of springs.. nv just has springs. seasonal springs..it's a desert~
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
"creeks are not the same as springs either. which is what nevada being a desert mostly has! "
You said Nevada has mostely springs. I take that meaning they have a lot?
WisePillow 2 years ago
The BLM provided the eight million number.
WisePillow 2 years ago
In fact, reducing horse populations in a given area has a negligible effect on range conditions: after massive wild horse roundups, herd areas show little or no improvement, especially in instances when cattle numbers remain the same (or increase).
WisePillow 2 years ago
In order to remove wild horses from public lands, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has claimed that horses are destroying critical habitat, competing for grazing lands, and overpopulating. But reports by the General Accounting Office and the National Academy of Sciences dispute such claims: BLM has never presented any evidence that horses destroy habitat, nor that their population levels are what it claims they are.
WisePillow 2 years ago
how many field agents does the national academy of sciences have out on public lands?
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
The National Academy of Sciences does not employee field agents year around. But they don't just go into the field for a few days and then leave. They employee field agents for years so they can determine the impact surrounding wildlife has on the ecosystem. Right now, they probably don't have any scientist in Nevada. But wild horse advocates have been trying to get them to come back but, it cost a great deal.
WisePillow 2 years ago
And, as to how many, they probably send a team. More than one but, probably less than five. It all depends on what they're researching, how difficult it is obtain data, and where they are researching.
WisePillow 2 years ago
I think you should try to consider that wild horses may actually have a positive impact on their environemnt.. Cows have no upper front teeth, only a thick pad: they graze by wrapping their long tongues around grass and pulling on it. If the ground is wet, they will pull out the grass by the roots, preventing it from growing back. Horses have both upper and lower incisors and graze by "clipping the grass," similar to a lawn mower, allowing the grass to easily grow back.
WisePillow 2 years ago
A team of Russian scientists, part of a cooperative venture with the United States, came in 2001 to study the effects of grazing animals on riparian areas in Nevada. They tested streams for nutrients and examined the desert and Sierra to learn techniques to improve the environment of their homeland.
WisePillow 2 years ago
what do stream nutrients and animals have in common... i don't c how animals put nutrients into the water. oh they waste in it right...? is that y they call mustangs shitters?
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
Well, if you don't know what nutrients and animals have in common, then let me give you a little science lesson. Nutrients are substances which help plants grow, much like vitamins help us grow. You with me? Two chemicals, nitrogen and phosphorus, are important to plant growth. Lawn and plant fertilizer and animal waste (including human sewage) contain nitrogen and phosphorus. Too much nutrients mean too much plant growth, especially of algae (microscopic floating plants).
WisePillow 2 years ago
When there is too much algae, the water becomes cloudy and blocks light to underwater grasses, which are called submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Algae can also grow on SAV leaves, like moss on a tree. However too much algae can further block light and kill the grasses. When algae die, they sink to the bottom and decompose in ta process that removes oxygen from the water. Fish and other aquatic organisms cant exist in water with low dissolved oxygen levels.
WisePillow 2 years ago
Like I said, cattle camp around any kind of water source. Cattle are famous for defecating in water sources all all kinds. Let's say a stream since that type is on your mind. When animal waste enters, it uses the available dissolved oxygen creat ammonia. The combination of low oxygen, ammonia, and warm tempatures is detrimental to aquatic life. Nutrients from animal waste can also make the water cloudy and green which futhure inhibites aquatic life. You do you get it?
WisePillow 2 years ago
I meant spring not stream. Sorry, I'm typing rather quickly here.
WisePillow 2 years ago
how does this work when the springs are seasonal as they are in much of nv... they're bone dry most summers
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
No, cattle should be called shitters for defecating in water sources. Wild mustangs aren't doing that because; unlike cattle, they don't camp around water sources.
WisePillow 2 years ago
The scientists found that cows, which tend to camp around water sources, cause more damage to the stream banks than wild horses, which tend to drink and move on: "When we saw horses drinking from creeks, we didn't see much impact except for hoof prints. The water looked clean, had good overhanging branches and there was no sign of erosion on the banks. There was an abundance of insects and animals, including frogs and dragonflies and water-striders."
WisePillow 2 years ago
your all screwed up. horses get posessive of water sources! cattle feed out for feed! their cows if they camped out hey would starve! creeks are not the same as springs either. which is what nevada being a desert mostly has!
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
I am not screwed up. And horses don't get posessive of water sources. They drink and move on. Horses graze up to ten miles from water sources. Cattle, on the other hand, stay right next to the water. Areas where there abundance of water are fenced in strictly for cattle. When this happens, wild horses die of dehydration. These fences of purposely put up by the BLM who've already claimed they could have a negative impact on horses. I've seen dead horses lying next to these fences. It's funny.
WisePillow 2 years ago
Oops! The, "it's funny" was meant as a continuation of another paragraph. I went over my limit and thought I delete the entire post. I guess not. Sorry. I didn't mean that it's funny to see dead horses. Goodness...
WisePillow 2 years ago
It's funny. The BLM push wild horses to live in inhospitable places where the water is scarse and the food not has rich as is it should, then they say the horses are dieing of dehydration and starvation.
WisePillow 2 years ago
Areas extensively used by cattle had fewer nutrients in the water and showed signs of bank erosion and other damage, concluded the study.

WisePillow 2 years ago
Your video actually made me cry.. Thank you for making it.
WisePillow 2 years ago
do your research. the mustangs are not overpopulated. they are not diseased. and they are not starving. these are all lies told by the blm to justify the treatment given to these horses. if there is an overpopulation problem on the range, it lies with the cattle. there are 80 million cattle grazing on the lands. compare that to only 20 thousand wild horses.
powelljerseys85 2 years ago
This brings up a bigger problem. Mustangs are in peril, there population is growing drastically, from what I understand, and are ruining their habitat in addition health problems that over population brings. The BLM needs to develop a better management plan. They need to start with an accurate count of them, there are reports that they underestimated the population of the Mustangs.
dudlier 2 years ago
Wild horses comprise a minute fraction of grazing animals on public lands, where they are outnumbered by cattle at least 200 to 1. The 1971 Act states that, in a given area, a certain amount of vegetation may be eaten as forage. Only when that amount is exceeded are there too many animals. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has overwhelmingly favored cattle in setting appropriate wild horse population levels, resulting in indiscriminate removal of horses and burros from public lands.
WisePillow 2 years ago
2) From over 2 million in 1900, our wild horse population has dwindled to less than 25,000.
WisePillow 2 years ago
3) Wild horses are not suffering from starvation and drought. Mismanagement is at the root of most of these problems. Despite federal protection, wild horses have been relegated to the most inhospitable areas of the range. Still, they have adapted and survived; most horses rounded up by the BLM are well-fed and healthy. However, public land fencing often prevents horses from accessing scarce natural water sources and disrupts their widespread grazing patterns.
WisePillow 2 years ago
4) In such instances, better in-the-wild management is the answer, rather than costly and traumatic round-ups.
WisePillow 2 years ago
5) Wild horses are not responsible for over-grazing the lands. The main cause of degradation of public lands is livestock use, not wild horses. Cows graze within a mile of water, while wild horses are highly mobile, grazing from five to ten miles from water, at higher elevations, on steeper slopes, and in more rugged terrain.
WisePillow 2 years ago
6) A congressionally-mandated study by the National Academy of Sciences found that, in one year, livestock consumed 70% of grazing resources on public lands, while wild horses and burros consumed less than 5%.
WisePillow 2 years ago
7) Wild horses do not double in size every five years and they DO have natural predators. In its 1982 study, the National Academy of Sciences found annual rates of increase of 10% or less in wild horse populations, a far cry from the 20% increase relied upon by the BLM to justify its removal program. Wild horses do have predators, in the form of mountain lions and bears. In 2004 for instance, only 1 out of 28 foals survived in Montanas Pryor Mountain area.
WisePillow 2 years ago
not everywhere has bears. and the mt lion would much rather take down a mule deer than a horse.
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
Mountain lions kill both and babies from both species are easy to kill; nevertheless, mountains lions do kill foals and foals do make up a large portion of their diet. Wild mustang foals are very important to a mountain lions diet and the absence of such prey can have a negative impact on other prey species. In the case of the Coyote Canyon horses in the Anza Borrega National Park (California).
WisePillow 2 years ago
i know for a FACT!! that in north western nevada near the calico complex that your statement is not true!!! i know several gov. trappers, along with gov. and private lion hunters. and when they cut open a lion they don't find horse remains. maybe here or there but 9x out of 10 it's going to be deer, or bh sheep!
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
@kwhorseluver
kwhorseluver, mountain lions may not hunt foals near the calico complex.

"So there was absolutely nothing I said that wasn't true"
Oops! Mistake! I meant that there wasn't anything I said that was untrue.
WisePillow 2 years ago
i'm sure they do hunt them. but the nevada mt lions main diet is not wild horse... it's mule deer! i'm sure this carries out to mt, ca, and ut. but i havn't been around lions in those areas so i can't be certain about that.
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
Just for the record, I do not rely on the BLM for data. I go to the National Academy of Sciences. Last year, BLM authorized a 300% increase in cattle grazing for the area- Calico-, and the building of a fence that BLM itself admitted might cut wild horses from their winter range and cause them to die.
WisePillow 2 years ago
Wild horses would also be locked out of the best pasture with the most abundant water during the driest time of the year. At the time, BLM justified its decision by arguing that wild horse populations in the area were minimal. A couple of months later, it came out with its puzzling claim of population explosion, setting the stage for this massive round-up.
Clearly, something here is amiss. Where did these 3,000 horses come from?
WisePillow 2 years ago
Many times after wild mustangs were "gathered" cattle would soon be seen having taken their place in areas wild horses onced grazed. If wild mustangs are overgrazing the lands, then why put cattle on the very range they are supposedly eating away? Right now, the BLM is currently being investiaged for misdeeds. So I really don't consider them a legitimate source.
WisePillow 2 years ago
@kwhorseluver
WisePillow 2 years ago
no, all over nevada ... y would a lion want to fight with a mare when it can just rake down a deer. calico isn't ne different. i said north west nevada. before 2000 they had the same problems with lions and deer... not lions and horses.
kwhorseluver 2 years ago
You are right. Mountain lions do not hunt adult wild horses, but they have been documented to prey on foals who stray away from the heard. Mountain lions will stalk a band for quit some time till an opportunity presents itself. I've heard differently than you. I've heard that mountains prey on fouls frequently because; a clumsy foal is a lot easier to catch than an adult deer. But I do know that mountain lions do prey on foals a lot in the Pryor Mountains and in areas in California.
WisePillow 2 years ago
I never said that wild mustangs are their main diet. Only that foals make up a considerable portion of it. And when wild horses were removed from certain areas, other prey species were impacted negatively. Like in California. Perhaps there are less deer in California and at the Montana/Nevada border. I don't know what their habitate range is. But your comments are certainly interesting and I am taking them into consideration. I could very well be wrong about Nevada. I'm still lookin for info.
WisePillow 2 years ago
@kwhorseluver
WisePillow 2 years ago
@WisePillow
But I will see if I can find something about the possible lack of predation on mustangs in that area - if there is a lack.
WisePillow 2 years ago

WisePillow 2 years ago
8) Such low survival rate was mostly due to mountain lion predation.
WisePillow 2 years ago
9) Wild horses are a reintroduced native wildlife species. Paleontological evidence shows that wild horses evolved on the North American continent over the course of some 1.6 million years. How they disappeared 11 to 13 thousand years ago, if in fact they actually ever became extinct here, is a mystery. When Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519, he brought horses from Spain. Others followed.
WisePillow 2 years ago
10) From these reintroduced animals came the great numbers of wild horses that eventually changed the culture of the Plains Indians. The Spanish horses soon adapted to the same ecological niche their native relatives had once thrived in. Long before the early settlers pioneered the West, they were here as a reintroduced, fully adapted wildlife species, 3 million strong.

Very sad. In Australia our brumbies are treated the same way. They are seen as feral pests. They must be so scared those poor mustangs.

after all this trauma, its amazing to me that they still let people adopt these horses. if i were a horse, i would never trust another human again after an experience like this

these pictures are of amazing quality, it is very rare to find events like this taken in good quality, thanks for sharing!
I think this is really cruel and the humane society funded it??
those shots of the horses without the helicopters were stunning, it's so sad to see beauty being treated like this.

If we don't round em up lets have a hunting season on them instead.

HorseSister 2 years ago
It's all of us "ONES" put together that will matter...and we should all stay informed about OUR Mustangs.

This is horrific and heartbreaking. I cannot see why horses have to be terrorized in order to satisfy some fuc....ing desk sitter in Washington.

Can't anyone leave ANYTHING alone? We invade THEIR land and try to drive THEM out - have we learned a valuable lesson here?!?
