To add to the confusion... the Tagalog term for "Filipino" is "Pilipino".

So to sum it up:

Filipino (or Pilipino) refers to both the "official language of the Philippines", and the "citizens of the Philippines"

Tagalog is the dialect that the Filipino Language is based upon. The rest of the language is made up of borrowed words from other languages, especially English and Spanish; obviously because they colonized the Philippines.

Side note: The term for a female Filipino is "Filipina".

Batangeno, Laguna, Marinduque are dialects of Tagalog, not Ilocano and Cebuano. You can't downgrade other languages to a mere dialects as much as how Philippine Educational Curriculum teaches at school. :D
