I like to dip the sugar cube in the absinthe, then light it on fire on top of the spoon. This allows the sugar to breakdown and caramelize a little. Next pour cold water over the spoon, but not too much, just enough to wash the sugar off the spoon. Then mix the sugar, water, and absinthe together. Your sugar cube stayed pretty much intact. By lighting it on fire it will breakdown and mix well throughout the drink.

Absinthe doesn't contain any psychedelic compounds. The wormwood contains thujone, which is a convulsant rather than a hallucinogen, and you'd have to imbibe so much to get an effect that you would definitely die of alcohol poisoning before your experienced any convulsions.
Absinthe does have a different feeling than other alcohol, I don't know what chemically induces it, but Absinthe has a sort of "lucid" drunkeness. It doesn't seem to impair your senses as much.
