@codefunkingmonkey . When did U last watch this movie? Watch it again if possible. The message of the movie is- "Truth is beautiful". Even if at the first instance it is appearing ugly, it is beautiful. Zeenat Amaan is a village girl her face burnt badly from one side & she has become ugly(from one side). She sings very well. Shashi Kapoor falls in love & marries her. Seeing the ugly side he thinks she is somebody else & leaves her. In the end he realizes...Truth is beautiful & they re unite.

Satya-Truth. Sundar- Beautiful. Shiv, though is a God of Hindu religion, but here in this song the word has been used just to build up the argument.

Opening lines- Ishwar satya hai-God is truth. Satya hi Shiv hai- Truth is Shiv. Shiv hi sundar hai- Shiv only is beautiful. Satyam Shivam Sundaram- Truth is beautiful.

Satya is truth, shiv is benefactor, Sunder-soothing...sweet to hear, to see, to practice.

The original name is Rudra, Ravana first called him shanker means (sham-kalyan, kuru-doer) one who is benefactor hence shivam means the benefactor

@Shaky1996 . Thanks. Your explanation of " Shiva" is correct. Shiva is "Kalyankari" ( Its the Hindi word meaning "Benefactor", as you mentioned. the one who does "Good". Though I have my doubts about the Movie & the Song. Is it "the truth 'must' be beneficial & soothing, or "If it is truth, it is beautiful & soothing, even if prima facie it is appearing ugly?"

In hindu philosophy the truth must be beneficial and soothing to the whole entity of a person, i.e. satyam, shivam, sunderem....if the truth is not beneficial and is not soothing it must not be a truth. Also if we read it from back to forth..sundrem, shivam and satyam...it means any deed or word is soothing only when it is beneficial to all and then only it can be called truth or satyam

Satya must be beneficial (shivam), and sundram or soothing as well. if the truth is not beneficial for all it is not truth, if it hurts someone it is not truth. if you read it from back to forth...it goes sundram, shivam, satyam.....if it is beautiful it must be beneficial otherwise it is not beautiful, if it is beneficial it must be the truth...nothing else.
