@camoflaguemonkey The problems were due to our guys not being told how to clean their rifles, and even that it wasn't necessary. The barrel also lacked a chrome lining which made that issue much worse (McNamara's insane decision, probably related to cost). After these issues were remedied in Vietnam, the M16A1 was much more reliable.

Yes A1s are still used. If the rifle still works then there is no point in making new ones if you already have the same rifle. It is basically the same rifle and the Army is on a budget. In fact some of the old M14s have been taken out of storage and given to soldiers.

personaly if i were to have gone off to the army id rather qualify with an m14 than an m16....rough powerful raw killing power. plus its basically a sniper rifle as far as accuracy and range go. more reliable too. although both rifles do work superbly well

Very nice video. Shows how dated our thinking was back then. You know a lot about the weapon, and I agree with you we should find a replacement for at least the gas system. All the best rifles in history use a gas piston system, the M16 should be updated, it would certainly save me a lot of cleaning time. I laughed when I saw the soldier carrying it by the handle, you'd be shot for that here! Nobody actually uses the handle, it's one of the most useless parts of the rifle. M14 is the best though

I hate all the credit the M16 gets for its "revolutionary" direct gas system. The Swedish AG42 and French MAS49 used direct gas systems decades before the M16.

Yeah I think the Italians had one of the earliest direct gas rifles. Like all direct gas rifles, it SUCKED too. If this rifle had a .270 round and used a piston mechanism of some sort rather than direct gas or .223, it would be a great rifle. But it doesn't. To bad...

The M-16 is a piece of crap! Only reason we have it is Robert McNamara and his 'whiz' kids who thought they knew weapons. It made some people rich too, another reason. .223 is a varmint cartridge.

In 1965, if I am not mistaken, Mattel manufactured the grip for the M16.

First issues of the weapons had the Mattel logo in the grip, but by mid 1966 was removed.

The M16's plastic furniture doesn't have to have the "Mattel" toy label to be disliked if its indeed flimsy as the A1 handguards are/were. Strong, hard plastic in TAN colors are outstanding for weapons compared to wood.
