Do not dishonor Teresa Teng with petty politics. Her birth was here in Taiwan and her grave is here in Taiwan. She was never able to sing in Mainland China because the Chinese banned her music. She did, however, perform a concert called "Democratic Songs for China" in Hong Kong. So as you can see, she loved all people of Chinese ethnicity whether from China or from Taiwan, but she was not a communist. She was and always be from Taiwan and we are proud to have her.
God sent her angel - TERESA to comfort us with her "TRUE, KIND, BEAUTIFUL". She left with us her LOVE in music too. You won't be forgotten & forever living in our memory till the end of world!!!
The word Chinese does not necessarily mean a passport, it also means the recognition of Chinese culture. I'm American and I'm a Chinese as well.
Even though TT was born in Taiwan (governed by POC), she still thinks she's Chinese. Yogizuna, I understand your point. But I would appreciate if we understand my point.
Yes, as some of you said, we're also fans of Teresa! Let's understand each other more and make the world more peaceful. Then our idol - TT, will be smiling at us from Heaven.
I care more about the cultural or ethnic definition of Chinese. I wish every Chinese (no matter she/he lives in mainland China, Taiwan, or any other places) a happy life.
During June 4th movement, Teresa Teng was part of the group on stage singing at that movement in Hong Kong. Why did she care? Have you ever thought about it?
She sang,"My home is at the other side of the mountains." Do you understand what she meant?
All Chinese knows that song well.
All Taiwaneses were from mainland of China. The only difference is the time we immigranted to Taiwan sooner or later. No doubt about it, we are all Chinese one way or the other.
In the USA, no matter where one's parents are from, their children born here are called Americans, not Italians, Chinese, Russians, etc. So her parents were from mainland China, she was born in Taiwan, that makes her a Taiwanese for me. My opinion will not change on this.
As for "no such thing as two Chinas", think again my friend. During America's civil war, there were in fact two separate countries in America, and technically speaking, China is still in a civil war. A "cold" civil war now.
I am Italian, Spanish, and German, but born in and live in America. Around 1985, I became interested in the J-Pop scene, and that is how Teresa Teng's singing came into my life.
Shi is/was fantastic is'nt she? She definitely is a shining star and was very very special in her lifetime on this earth and will probably never be forgotten.
Hi Yogizuna, please to know you. My apology, my assumption was wrong but I hope you have understood my explanation.
Your understanding of a person's identify is a bit different from the Chinese. It is okay though. We Chinese are very proud of our ancestry and ethnicity. Our culture is the longest continuous civilization in the world (5,000+ years!).
The most important point however is that we are both hugh fans of Teresa Teng - Xie Xie!!
Since I love Teresa Teng and her work, this will be my final response on this issue...
Like I said, it does not matter where my parents, or other ancestors were born. I am an American because I was born in the USA, and that is why I do not call myself Spanish or German... If I thought like you, when people asked me what I was, I would say German, which would no longer be true.
You are where you are born, and you are supposed to blend in with that country, not go back to your ancestors. Thanks.
Taiwan considers itself independent. For many people born there, they consider themselves Taiwanese.
If New Jersey decided to become independent over 50 years ago, then I would be a New Jerseyian, not an American, even though the country of New Jersey was still part of the "Americas", and my parents were from the United States. This is clear, and all the propaganda in the world will not change it. Those who wish to be independent should be allowed to, and not forced to change their minds.
She is Taiwanese in the same way that I am German, Italian, and Spanish because of my ancestors, yet I am an American, not a German or Italian or Spaniard.
um, I'm Taiwanese myself, I'm just wondering why you're trying to claim that she's from China when she's definitely not. Why do you keep insisting that she's "Chinese" and not Taiwanese? What's your problem anyways? You hate Taiwan? Jealous that Taiwan is better than China in every possible way?
When I first saw you, I saw love. And the first time you touched me with your sweetness voice , I felt love And after all these years, you're still the one I love.

I felt (rather immodestly) that this ci 词 was not polished and made some modifications. Hope TT doesn't mind.
往事不堪思,
世事難預料;
莫將煩惱著詩篇,
来日恨夢少.
少年野心如夕阳,
回首无尽烟云稀;
天涯何處有知己,
只恨歌舞已散彩雲飛.

默默一江扬子天尽流.

Hi Yogizuna,
I have read this thread with great interest. Firstly, from your screen name, I assume you are an Japanese American right?
By and large you are right but I think you have failed to understand the difference between ETHNICITY and CITIZENSHIP.
Yes, you are born in American, therefore by defination an Amercian BUT you are an American of Japanese ethnicity.
I am British Chinese BTW, not an anglo-saxon Bristish!

But the difference is New Jersey and the rest of the states are united... Taiwan and China are not truly united, at least not yet.
As long as China and Taiwan are "divorced", she is Taiwanese to me, with Chinese ancestry.
