How many hits like this are the result of the puck handler not keeping his eyes up? Plenty. Just like the commentator was saying, "you have to take responsibility as a puck handler...". This might have been acceptable back in the day with Scott Stevens but in today's NHL where the players are faster and stronger that sort of hit is just plain dangerous. It adds nothing to the game and will only lead to someone eventually dying on the ice. If you see this hit and have any other reaction than being disgusted, something is wrong with you.

as someone who's sustained a concussion in a pretty nasty bike accident, i know first hand its after effects. considering the emerging evidence from professional sports regarding their long term impact, it's necessary to make every effort to limit them. regardless of whether you grew up playing hockey in a different manner, the rules have got to change to protect the players. the nhl did a great job of reinforcing that point today by ending aaron rome's season.

A perfect example of a clean hit delivered after the pass would be Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers on Patrice Bergeron in Game 4 of this years Flyers- Bruins series Bergeron delivered a pass and Giroux hit him straight on never came from the blindside,never targeted his head..the way you're supposed to hit..CLEAN

Not trying to make light of the situation, but I never got why players never look up. Your a puck handler, 99.8% of the time someone is coming at you. After you pass look ahead. Done. How many hits like this are the result of the puck handler not keeping his eyes up? Plenty. Just like the commentator was saying, "you have to take responsibility as a puck handler...". Late hit yes, but clean. I think his head bouncing off the ice is what did the most damage.

perfect example to all hockey players. skate with your heads up. we as hockey players from the age of 5 are taught not to watch your passes. all my life this was a legal hit, we were taught to hit that way. this is more Horton's fault than Rome's. I myself don't find it to be a late hit either, should have 2 - 3 seconds after the puck leaves the stick, hit was high but not late, maybe next time Horton will think twice about coming over the offensive blue line with his head looking behind him

This might have been acceptable back in the day with Scott Stevens but in today's NHL where the players are faster and stronger that sort of hit is just plain dangerous. It adds nothing to the game and will only lead to someone eventually dying on the ice. If you see this hit and have any other reaction than being disgusted, something is wrong with you.

@marcmtlca I totally agree! A good solid hit adds to the excitement of the game & everyone hopes the players come away with just a few stars swirling. But this stuff imo has got to go before we see someone die right before our eyes. And I'm *really* getting tired of listening to the likes of Eddie O blaming the victim for the hit put on him. Horton glanced to the side momentarily to make a pass...that is *NOT* skating thru' the middle oblivious to everything around him - it's executing a play.
