  • 4 people got passed by Donohue!

  • What a pleasure to hear Mark and Roger talking in full racing-engineer mode -- a calmly rational language they used to create dazzling art on the track.

It's certainly easy to see why Penske remains the most dominant car owner ever, and Donohue's name is still spoken with deep affection and awe among racing drivers.

    They were truly something Else.

  • fantastic..

  • The speed differentials between sports-racing prototypes and production-based machines was always large, but even so the way that Gulf Porsche 917 whistles around 'em on the banking is astonishing...

  • I was thinking just that as I watched. Then you think hmm, this was Jan 1970, so it was the original 560 hp 4.5 lite 917 engine. That's half of the power Donohue had available in the last of the Canam 917/30 The 917 #1 seen here is Jo Siffert & Brian Redman. It finished 2nd to Gulf #2 of Rodriquez and Kinnunen.

  • whats that line about bringing a knife to a gun fight?

  • I'm up.

  • Good post - thanks. IMO, Mark Donahue was the ultimate driver. He was a mechanical engineer who applied those principles to racing, and always at the limit. His book "The Unfair Advantage" recently went back into print.

"If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough horsepower." R.I.P. Mark.

  • Love these old 60's-70's American muscle cars, though as I'm English you can imagine that's not a particularly popular opinion where I live. But wow... that Javelin is truly a beautiful car, and the sound is incredible.

  • And Javelins / AMXs are one of the most beautiful coupes ever. I've loved them since the second they appeared.

  • Penske looked more like a movie star but in fact he and Donohue were an almost unfair combination with almost divine ability. Both at the absolute pinacle in their respective roles - truly a phenomenon. Both hugely respected by Porsche and Donohue worked with Porsche to develop the most devastating racecar in history in the canam 917 Penske's longevity and grit is awe inspiring - still the absolute force in US racing. And people have movie actors as heroes ? jeeez

  • Agree 100%, this team brought some brain damage to various race series where grease and tiresmoke was thought to be enough to win. Their history of pushing the technical limits was impressive.

  • Roger Penske is an executive; Mark Donahue is a driver. Regardless of where each of these men wound up, motorsport is better for it.

  • Now that's real racing... back when you could tell what kind of car was running around the track. Thanks for posting a great video!

  • Great coverage with the actual audio from 70. If you can find more race coverage from those years with the authentic audio, post them in you.tube!!

  • 'The Unfair Advantage' was published in 1975 shortly before Mark's death in practice for the Austrian Grad Prix.

  • these cars didnt just race straight

  • mark donohue is one of the best racing minds in history. he has a novel out called the unfair advantage. if i owned a race team. it would be required reading. its that important

  • this is wonderful!!

too bad they dont do it like this anymore!!

  • TransAm series 71/72 winners later? Nice cars

  • thanx for puting this vid. up i have a 72 amx and watching history about this car is great
