I have sent you a video of my organic chicks raised under a mother hen. Chicks learn so much from having a parent plus you don't use energy to heat lamps. I would also think about getting a rooster and raising your own chicks, then you really will have food security and they will be organic. Unless you are really lucky in where you live, I would be really worried about buying day-old chicks unless I was sure they hadn't been vaccinated and their parents weren't languishing in a battery system.
THIS VIDEOS REALLY HELP ME ALOT, I HAVE MY OWN CHICKENS its been about 3 months that i got them and i get so freaking crazy when they lay an egg lol i love them and my hubby an kid do too =)
@INTpvg a normal egg is a hatching egg... to get an egg to hatch, it has to be kept warm for a couple weeks. to eat eggs, you take them from the hen before the yoke starts to develope.
@INTpvg If you put the egg against some light or sun, the hatching will have some kind of dark shade. of course if you don't have a rooster, you are out of luck. But even you have a rooster, you still want to double check to make sure.
this is how chickens were meant to be raised not like in factory farming or in cages were they cant even open there wings "food inc" and "earthlings" kinda made me reconsider whats on my dinner plate
If you are still looking for a range of prices, laying mash or pellets range from $6.75-$10.75 if that helps. Starter feed for chicks would cost $7.50-$11.50 depending on size for both feeds listed. Hope it helps!!!
We love our chickens but have never had great success with the new chickens and the old together. We always start with a new fock every year or so. Thanks
hey wait a minute a baby chick dosent need to be warm i had a baby chicks outside in a cage didnt die i just keep it in bunch of grass so incase it gets old

@AfterAuburn from what I know that chick looked to me like a silver laced wyandotte or a silver sebright. Probably a wyandotte.
