Unfortunately it it seems that you have right - this movie sucks. Two guys discussing why John Carpenter movie worked, and why this new prequel/remake doesn't work:
Hey man. Yeah, I feel your pain and worry about this movie but have to say that it does look pretty good. We'll always have the Carpenter movie and that won't be affected by the prequel. Initial buzz has been good (I've become slightly obsessed over this film now). The effects range from awesome/horrible to just the normal CGI but I'm gonna wait and see it before I tear it apart. Have faith man, you never know.. it might be fantastic
when people see the full film and not only the trailer THAT is the time that they will be able to Say if the movie sucked or if the movie was AWESOME . Let's just hope this film is done the right way .
And yes some prequels and shouldn't get made but if there is part of a movie that is untold and is interesting yes it shouldd be made as long as the the writing is good the script which is the basis of the film, and a quality cast, like Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" this is a science fiction film that will not be an" Alien" film with Aliens being shot up, its a different film but yes will tie in to the 79' film somehow.
Dude as soon as you started speaking and said this is a remake I said this guy doesn't know what he is talking about its a PREQUEL to the John Capenter "TheThing" it tells the back story at the Norwegien camp that leads to the 1981 film its very simple, a sequel would have the same story some different dialogue and different actors.
@Macready75 Yes. But I have learned, it is so different from the 1951 film that it can stand on its own. AND, they are both based on the book with the JC version being the best one.
@Macready75 Actually, even though the project was originally a remake, Carpenter declared that what he did was more of an adaptation of the original story than a mere remake, because he liked Hawk's movie too much and didn't want to change it in any way. As Talkbackworld put it, the two movies stand on their own and are more different than they are alike. Just sayin'.
still don't understand your objections over having woman protagonist. Again Teminator, Aliens... all of those had stong heroine as main lead, and both movies were very good. But I agree about anything else CGI is really unnecessary, it look fake and ridiculous, and having prequel realy undermine the mystery surrounding fate of norwegian expedition. This same can be said about Star Wars prequels - we don't have do see what what lead Anakin into the Dark Side. Prequels are usually pointless
He's like every other wannabe internet film critic who bitches about a movie before it's released because he thinks it will make him cool to all the teenagers.
HAVE YOU SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN the movie yet????? Talk back...calm down..see the movie, then come back and say something.....the movie looks good so far to me...whats missing is the dog scene...IF ITS A REMAKE...which it aint. What you said about Expendibles??...so what dude...still a good movie. geez
I agree The Thing did not need a prequel and it does take away from the mystery a little. And I agree with the CGI. The people in charge did say they would use special effects with a little bit of CGI but it looks like the used all CGI which isn't as frightening. But I will still see the movie. lol It will probably suck but if it has to do with The Thing I'll see it. Thats how fanboys work.
I'll admit you have many valid points when it comes to what you are saying about this "prequel" and yes it is a prequel. However you do not have to the right to pass judgment on any of us. Carpenter's The Thing is one of my top 5 favorite movies and despite thinking it didn't need a prequel I still want to see it. In your mind though that makes not a true fan. Blow me homey. Yes, it probably will suck, but you don't know for sure. Watch it first than if it's horrible I will join you.
@biomegapoalbear1984 Yes, it MAY be amazing. But from what we have seen and knowing the times we live in and the track record of this stuff, i think it is safe to say this is just going to use the juice of Carpenter's film and just bastardize it with CG and a female lead who AIN'T Sigourney Weaver's or Linda Hamilton's level. Fans of the Carpenter film should have a united front and say...do something original and LEAVE quality alone.
Dude shut up. Ever since the first film, many viewers want to know what happen. Shit if you think you could come up with a good scary film then do it. Your opinion is retarded. You black ignorant. And tell me, how would you kill it if it was you?? With your fried chicken powers. Lol
@barrazalover HAHA. Is it so hard to come with an opposing view without resorting to derogatory comments?
Please do not assume that every fan WANTED to see wha6 happened in Norway. They may have been interested to know...but part of the beauty of film which people have forgotten is the unknown. WE DO NOT NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING.
but there was prequel material from the john carpenter thing, the beginning of the movie is the remnants of the Norwegian team chasing down the dog which was the current form of the thing, so this story will tell how the Norwegian team found the alien frozen in ice and will end of with the last survivors of the Norwegian team chasing the dog
@talkbackworld they are makeing it diffrent why do we need it? lets face it the thing didnt start out as that dog clearly something happend before the second team got there why else did that norwigen guy act so crazy during the beginging of the film? hell id like to know myself how is it a rip off its a prequal a prequal cant be a rip off if its the story before the original film plus according to the trailer the thing dozent just sit there and wrigle about with its tentcels it can haul ass
