I was blessed to see The Brooklyn Bridge perform @ the 1968 Middlesex County College Fall Cotillion shortly after this song hit the top of the charts. An intimite setting...less than 500 in the audience.... Johnny did a fantastic job!

@jbee807 Good song? Sure. Great song? Maybe. Great breakup song? Yes. Greatest breakup song ever written? Nah! Gotta go with Natalie Cole and SOMEONE THAT I USED TO LOVE.
Johnny Maestro may have been the only lead singer to lead 2 different highly succeddful groups....The Crests and The Brooklyn Bridge. From "16 Candles"to "The worst that could happen".....A special talent

@MrCrusty529 Woodbridge TWP, NJ? I'm class of '68 WHS .... Brooklyn Bridge did the Nov 1968 fall dance @ Middlesex Co. College, Edison NJ ....Just as this song was topping the charts.
I heard this on the radio yesterday and had to hear it again. Great piece. These guys were pretty good, hardy any mistakes in this live performance. Thanks for posting.
Cosmopolitan Magazine -- my bible -- says that when a man tells you he doesn't want to get married, it means he doesn't want to marry YOU. Johnny Maestro, who sings this song, was survived in death by his wife Grace. So Cosmo must be right. Whoever Johnny is singing this song to, he just didn't want to marry HER.
@etbella3 This song was written by Jimmy Webb and was supposedly written about a girl in his life named Susan. He also wrote "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and MacArthur Park" about Susan. Johnny's singing was just so powerful and emotional! He felt and believed everything he sang. He gives me the chills when I listen to him, especially this song!

I recently found out a fella I had been falling heavily for for nearly ten years (and one I thought felt the same for me), is now living with his new girlfriend and no longer wants to have contact with me. Shortly after finding this info out, I heard this song playing...and when I found out it was by Brooklyn Bridge I knew it was a sign that whatever could have happened between never was going to. This fella lives only blocks from the Brooklyn Bridge. This song has a whole new meaning for me.
Wow, I never knew he passed. He must have passed something on to me. Mysteriously I, a baritone, found a way to bring my head voice (falsetto) into full range at about the same time he passed. I can comfortably sing this tune now. It was easily on of my favorites from childhood.
what more could one ask for than your girl in your arms and johnny singing one of his hits .. wow .. we were so lucky to have grown up in the age of great singers .. doowop will live forever because of them .. RIP ..
I heard this song, once again, on 60s on 6, and decided to try and find it here. That was when I realized that Johnny had died earlier this year. He has joined the band in Rock and Roll Heaven, his voice adding to those who preceeding him.
My only reget is that I never met Johnny, he was 12 yrs older than me & very influential in my own Music career, listening to him sing & trying to copy him I see how no one could because he was in a league of his own, I mention him every night I'm on stage & still listen to him every day...Tears roll down my face as I write this & I thank him for everything he's done & if it wasn't for Johnny I may have never became an entertainer.Though I never met you in my heart I call you friend... RIP
Hi! My name is John "Marty" Trautman, co-founder of a New York City doo-wop group known as "The Chevrons". Both Johnny & I attended Charles Evans Hughes H.S.. Johnny graduated in '56 & I in '57. I said it then & I'll say it now. Johnny Maestro was the greatest lead vocalist of the entire doo-wop era! R.I.P. Johnny. We will NEVER forget you! Amen.
I didn't hear him hit that high note, but this is a better performance than the one that was recorded. Didn't know he died this year...makes me very sad.
First concert I ever saw, Cardinal Spellman HS, Bronx, NY. Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge. They played their hearts out as if they were headlining at Carnegie Hall, not a HS gym. Great music, real professionals, I'll never forget that night. Thanks Johnny, rest in peace, now the Angles are not just listening in, but hearing you first hand :)
What was the most amazing about Johnny was that he amazingly stayed flawless all of these years....for those of you who weren't as huge of a fan as some of us, just watch a video of him performing 25 years after this was shot and listen to how he sounded the same, if not BETTER... The best pure talent!!! Irreplaceable!!
i saw johnny and the bridge in levittown in 1968, when i was in ninth grade then when i was an entertainer, i met him back stage at mount airy lodge in the poconosi in 1984,he sounded even better than ever, and he was so humble. a great vocalist, huge chops and good guy, he will be missed. i feel blessed to have been in his presence. pat seminario
Lol, remember putting a quarter in the juke box playing this song and all the other kids started throwing stuff at me. Oh well.. great song. Thanks for the memories.
This song has special meaning to me too. My boyfriend didn't want to get married although it might have saved him from the draft during Vietnam. I started dating someone else and he signed up! I fell in love with the other guy, had a couple of kids (now grandchildren) and we're still together. The first love went to Vietnam, made the Army a career, is now retired and is married happily to someone else. He still has a special place in my heart and always will. We'll always be friends.
Cousin Brucie talked about Johnny Maestro on his radio program and said what a nice and sweet guy he was. Sorry to hear of his passing may he rest in peace.
I'm so happy I got to see Johnny Maestro in person a few times. He's a legend. Thank you for the music, that voice and the memories, Johnny. Your passing is the "worst that could happen" to all of your fans. We love you!
So many one-hit wonders back in the 50's and 60's--but not Johnny Maestro. One hit after the other, and he never lost that beautifut, powerful voice. RIP Johnny
RIP Johnny. I was so sad when I heard the news. I've always loved this song. A friend who has also since passed away sang this to me on my wedding day 7 years ago.
This was always one of my favorite songs. I'd blast it on my radio every time it came on! Johnny's voice is amazing. This song came to me so I decided to play it - little did I know he had just passed. I'm so sad. Prayers to his family
Another voice from my teen years has been silenced, but the music will ever live on. Oh, the memories that come with the music! Rest in peace, Johnny Maestro.
I just heard Johnny died. The first time I heard this song I was getting ready to go to Vietnam, and had just heard the love of my life, at that time, was getting engaged. Memories are great, death sucks!
I had never heard of Johnny Maestro until a week ago when I accidently ran into him while looking for the 5th Dimension's version of this song. He died today but he left us with a voice to remember.
I know Johnny was the lead singer of the Crests, but I did NOT know he was the lead singer of the Brooklyn Bridge until just a few weeks ago. I loved both groups and I had no idea they had the same lead singer. Poor Johnny.
Johnny Maestro also sang the lead at age 17 with the song "Sixteen Candles" as a member of The Crests. He passed on 3-24-2010 in Florida at the age of 70 as a result of cancer. RIP.....
Ive lost a tiny piece of my soul. I still remember the first time I saw Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge at the WCBS-FM 15th Anniversary concert. It was magical. I went on to see him in small clubs in Brooklyn, outdoor concerts (like the ones at the World Trade Center)anywhere I could see him. Each time, it filled my heart & brought me so much joy. Thank you Johnny, for your wonderful music and your magical voice. Rest in peace as you sing for the angels. Im sure theyre listening in.
