  • Thank's you made a really good tutorial! I highly appreciate it. The difficult part at 3:36 could have been a bit longer to hear oneself into the rythm in order to copy it. But I succeeded anyhow. So thanks again.

  • this is exactly the kind of tutorial I was looking for. simple, straight forward. You leave place for the user to use his own creativity, thanks!

  • piano too soft...

  • great tutorial, thanks for sharing (y)

  • Great video. I have a question. Are you supposed to remove the left hand simple bass line C G when there is a bass player? When you are playing with them, do you think it gets in the way and when it does, how do you still make use of your LH ? Sorry if this is confusing or out of context for this video. Thanks!

  • ezt neeee.... mekkora kaksi.... ez a szakmám szégyene..... vegyenek olyan hangszert ami világít h mit kell megnyomni.....

  • Thank you so much for this tutorial. Really simplifying and breaking it down to the basic or core of the parts for playing this genre. This is good for someone like me who learned playing piano by ear. Keep it up and looking forward to more of your work. :D

  • Great tutorial, I am certainly gonna try it, though I am not much into brazilian music. Anyway, if you make some other tutorials, I would like to see them :-)

  • hey man... im learning Piano... im 21... And thats...the most easier Tuto I ever seen before. Thanks... If You dont mind... Im going to take this, to put in a Hip Hop Track... It will sound great!!!!!.... Could I?

  • @thewafflemusic - yeah go for it! just send me a copy!!!

  • @thewafflemusic You did a great job of it mate, congrats

  • Good thank you...

  • do you have any comments about how the harmonic progression of bossa nova songs go? I always get confused, it seems like they change key alot. and from songs like little boat and girl from ipamena.. the only pattern i can figure out is that the bass moves around in tritones until it gets back to tonic... somehow (???)

  • @Clearie552 jobim was a really advanced harmonic composer! thats one of the things that makes his music really interesting to listen to! Wave for example has some great harmonic progressions. Don't try to "break the code" for bossa nova chords... because their isn't really one. Just learn chord progressions and put them in your memory. 2-5-1 is a really common jazz progression that is used A LOT in jazz and bossa nova... its really interesting when you break out of that standard pattern.

  • @chrismarx85 oh wow, you replied fast! well it is a saturday.

  • I learned how to do this by copying the accompaniment style on my clavinova.

  • Thanx for the explanation, it helped me a lot... :-)

  • A lot of pratice??

you realy have to be american to not play it right

    :P

  • @Codinhuu - if you're from brazil its probably pretty easy for you since you would hear it all the time. maybe you should try learning something from another country?

  • do you have the sheet music for this?

  • tu video casi no tiene volumen en el piano

  • i am try, but is quite difficult for me. i dont know why. i play guitar, snpanish guitar, gaita, sax....but the piano...dear lord..

tks alot man. was really great.. more more more...lol

  • boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

  • ENRIQUE IGLESIAS???

  • very nice tutorial. i learnt basic bosa nova in under an hour =D

  • thats was awesome brotha..

  • wow i got to try it out..

I always think that i dont have the "DNA for bossa nova" and now seems i could have a glimpse of it~

    thank you very much!

  • thanks for your prompt reply!!

"quick little background melodies" means around the chord notes, right?

  • it really doesn't matter... it sounds the best if they are centered around the chord tones though... (the notes in the chords). For example: in the right hand play an octave that is on the root of the chord... then see how it sounds if your octave is the 5th of the chord.

    Hope that made sense!

  • may i ask what could my left hand do when playing with other ppl, eg guitar bass or double bass?

  • GREEEAT Question :) Wingmanman!

Your left hand would jump up and do what your right hand is doing. Your right hand could then play some octaves... quick little background melodies while its comping.

  • cool u r awesome and thats easy to learn, thanks

  • cool stuff dude

  • there are a lot more inversions for these chords that you can use to add variation and avoid repetition

  • This is an awesome tutorial!!

  • Some viewers might know more than you think, so it would help to know the function of these chords (in what key is this?). The way you broke it up (between hands) made good sense.

  • very go¡¡¡¡ +100

  • Brasil não é só futebol!!!!!!!!!

  • i think teaching it is harder than playing it, I got it right away and I don't play piano (just muck around on it), so you're good at teaching, well done! Got any more little grooves up your sleeve?

  • nice jam, man!

it really helped me a lot when it comes to independization and I don't know how to. thanks

  • Your good teaching :) Thanks!

  • youre great!!!

  • he is only teaching, it's so basic it, but if somebody wants to listen a wonderful song, listen any of TOM JOBIM.

    congratulations, a good teacher.

  • Listen to anyone with the last name Gilberto :)

And all of antonio carlos jobim's songs are great as well.

Waters of march is my favorite

  • hihi~ im beginner can u show mi more of these basics trainngin..

  • Bossa nova is what this video is showing, it has roots in samba like the rock has roots in blues, Bossa is a style of music more refined than the samba, i love both.

if you want to listen a good samba , listen "Alcione - Gostoso Veneno"

    or samba-rock it's wonderful "Seu Jorge-Burguesinha".

  • wow... u seems to know alot.. :) is this recommended for beginners ? i'm beginner.. and i love bossa nova...

  • Great! Very educational

  • Hi! Thank you for that lesson. I love bossa nova and now I'm able to play it :)

  • it was a useful video.....i don´t play bossa nova with my band.....but i like it......actually i like all kinds of Latin Music......

  • that is so cool i learned the basics of brazilian bossa nova, just after the first time i watched this! now i could do many improvisations!

  • nice vid, thanks :)

  • you'r awesome man !

i played the classical music like 10 yrs , n abt to change to another style.

u'r tutorial is easy to understand n also , u dun talk bull shxt :)

    u deserve 5 stars =]

  • thanks, there is some notation and explanation for this on the blog :)

just search for bossa on the fastpianolessons blog!

    :)

    Keep practicing!

  • its a good lesson and teaches the style well.... really, the samba is only a bossa in double time, if you half timed this chord progression is would give you a bossa feel... like the idea of the 7th moving to the 6th

  • heyy... thx u!! 4 the lesson

  • That's strange, I'm learning bossa nova with an stranger, I'm Brazilian! lol!

I know how to play blues and classical musica, I've studied for 5 yeas and now I play by my own... Learning bossa nova with stranges! That's funny!

  • Well, in other way, you should call it "BASIC PIANO LESSON", don´t you?

  • Im not sure this is an ADVANCED piano lesson... ¬¬

  • You're right, Advanced isn't a good description, but it is advanced for most youtube piano players.

A better way to think about the skill level here:

you should try this after you've been playing for 1-4 years.

  • Man what a poor waste of time. you don´t groove for 2 cents...

  • woooow! can't believe i tried this on my piano in the middle of the night after watching this! HAHA! thanks pal!

  • This is a great lesson! I feel like I understand Bossa Nova. I got a question. I think it's possible to convert almost ANY song into Bossa Nova if it's done right. In this case, would you substitute CM9 & Dm9 for C & D? Just checking.

Well, when I tried your pattern on the Key of G, it didn't sound right. Let's say the chord progression in the original song is G, Bm7, Em, C & D7. How would you do this?

    Thank you in advance!

  • check out my blog!

i just posted some extra materials on this lesson there :)

I would agree it's possible to convert almost ANY song into Bossa Nova if it's done right... or any song to any style for that matter.

the rhythms are the most important... as well as the root 5th bass. keep those key elements in there and you have a very bossa sounding arrangements.

The bossa rhythms should work find over any chord progression. I just used a simple one for an example.

    Does that help?

  • YOU ARE A GOOD TEACHER... thats a special gift..

  • Hey! Great! I really learned it!

  • Fantastic!

    I am a brazilian pianist

  • tHIS IS THE PERFECT lesson I have been looking for, thanks!

  • No problem!

How long have you played piano for?

    Do you read notes?

  • yea, its very helpful, try the same pattern over Cmaj9, Bb13sus, Ebmaj9, dmin7 db7

  • i listen to this alot because its very very smooth you should make it a song chris its very very good, dont forget to add your little solo at the end that's my favorite paart. . .please bring us more peace and love thnx

  • Really great, thanks for posting!

  • thanx dude it would need lots of practice..

Do you know if the song you are playing is available somewhere (full)? I love the groove and I want to play along with this on drums: ) Thanks!
