If you want, try to liisten to Paulinho Braga, and also the traditional samba artists and groups like "Fundo de Quintal", "Zeca Pagodinho", or more motherns like "João Bosco".
But let me say a little thing. Try to fell Samba in 2/4, I mean, the half of the 4/4 you are feeling. It will change completelly your intention whae you play samba. Beleive me!!!Also trys to play 16th notes at the right hand, with some different accents. The pedal is played in a lighter way, balanced with the hands. The left hand is not a pattern all the time, it follows the melody,
@BeatProfessor actually any latin beat with that bass drum pattern is known as bossa nova which means latin drumming with a mix of jazz. samba is different and it is not this. But i think no one should give a shit about what kind of drumming is this, it sounds nice and thats what matters :)
very good man, but the hihat is wrong. you are doing it like a fast-jazz beat, but in samba the hihat never stops, it's continuous. it's still very good man.
@robatuta there are different types and colors for samba and what he did was a widely know samba style but you are correct that almost any samba has non-stop hi-hat
very good man, but the hihat is wrong. you are doing it like a fast-jazz beat, but in samba the hihat never stops, it's continuous. but it's very good man.
1 - There is a stronger emphasis on the two bass drum.
2 - Not used in conducting triplet multitap and yes, always emphasizing the notes of the rim.
3 - The swing set there is not the Samba. Among many other considerations on the subject. Find and listen more. Example: Edson Machado, Milton Banana, Erivelton Silva, Márcio Bahia, Airto Moreira and many others.
i understand the pattern is a little fast i tend to do that :P and starting with the hi hat was the way I learned, that and the kick. But whichever way you want to start to learn this pattern is totally up to you, i was just doing in ease for myself. Hopefully I will get new material up soon :) thanks for the comments though I appreciate it
I wrote down the notes and broke it off into sections and practiced it again and again and again. finally got it after a few days. doesn't sound as good, but I'm not as fast. practice practice practice!
@aassyr1111 dont start with the hihat. do the snare 1st then bass. 4get about about the hihat 4 now. then dont do the latin rythem on the hihat, just do quarter notes on it. as u progres then u do the latin rythem
Hey man, good lesson! I only wanna to do a correction, if u let me. Forgive, but I'm from Brasil (yep, with S), and here we play not based ond 4/4, but in 2/4. If u find for brazilian REAL samba songs (forget Bossa Nova, is only a style inside Samba genre) like for example "Deixa a vida me levar" (Let da life carry me - I guess) from artist Zeca Pagodinho, u'll see that Samba pulses like this: one and TWO and, one and TWO and, one and TWO and, etc. Playing this way, u'll sound better. Cheers!
@JeffersonMerida And what about that "non regular" thing going on, like there's always something late somewhere, that gives that peculiar caracter of traditional samba itself? Is there a way to "unmount" it, learn it and understanding it properly? Thanx
Yeah Dario! There it is. But to REALLY understand, u need to know the brazilian styles of playing percussion staff, cuz' Samba is originally played on Tamborim (little metal drum with high tuning), Pandeiro (a piccolo drum with jingles, mid tuning) & Surdo (similar to a floor tom or bass drum), and other instruments.
People tends to think the Samba 16th notes like tatatata, but is more like TA-tata-TA.
I'll soon do a video 'bout Samba and send u a message, ok? Cheers!
The Samba is Brazilian you are correct. But Brazil falls under the category of latin countries. If Brazil is considered latin, then I can surely say that Samba is generally known as a "latin" style. Many people and institutions widely recognize styles like samba, mozambique, bossa nova, meringue, cha cha, afro cuban to be "latin" styles. You may clarify this on wikipedia or many other forums because I'm sure others have tried to figure that out :) Hope that helps.
very nice

throw in alittle feel man, its samba. dont make it sound so square. at the end when you freestyled. SQUARE!
impact07 2 years ago
it's difficult for "non-latin" drummers to "feel" these rhythms that way... The best way is to think them like "a sensation" and not like patterns.
But like rock music is like that, they play it that way.
Argento1982 2 years ago
It's just that you need more independence for these beats then for 4/4 straight rock beats.
Orancube 2 years ago
Do you think you could give me the sheet music or tabs for this? Id really appreciate it
If you do, can you add in the ride cymbol pattern with left foot.
