Eh, when I play its half 12 year olds wearing shorts and a white t shirt and half 20-40 year olds in full BDUs and platecarriers.
I'm kind of in between the 2 extremes. I wear casual hunting gear and a bonnie hat with foliage on it. No plate carriers, no battle belt. All that is just added weight that's gonna slow you down.
@stratelite Plate carriers don't weight that much( unless you the ceramic plates which can add 10 to 25 pounds) personally I could still keep up with people even if I wore a plate carrier.

Ok so I personally think airsoft is more of a hobby and paintball is a sport. Paintball has several divisions (both Speedball and Woodsball). They have Professional teams with sponsors. Sure airsoft is more realistic (in SOME ways) but thats only if you are willing to spend tons of money in a hobby that you cant competivly compete in. If u wanna spend $300 in a hobby try one that you can play proffesional tounaments i would say choose paintball thats my opion...

@TheMamaluigi2 The U.S. military does in fact use paintball guns for certain exercises involving human targets. The same goes with law enforcement. I recently volunteered for a law enforcement exercise as a civilian bystander and the SWAT team that was running the drill was using paintball guns.
@TheMamaluigi2 Because you can't shoot people with a real gun without killing them. Like I said, I just volunteered for a SWAT team training exercise where they used paintball guns. They recruited a bunch of us Criminal Justice students to be civilians in order to produce a realistic hostage situation. The end result was a "dead" criminal. There's no way to conduct that exercise with live rounds unless you want to kill your volunteers.

From a practical standpoint, just because the toys are bigger and realistic looking doesn't change the fact that the principal is virtually identical to those Wal-Mart toys. Dressing up in a few grand of tacticool gear doesn't change that fact.
While I don't play, or am not a fan of either, at least paintball isn't trying to be something that it clearly is not.
@AreThereNoMoreNames the principle may be the same, but the effect is not. the actual high quality airsoft guns are designed to mimic the size, weight, and overall feel of the gun. the expensive guns are quite realistic, most handguns have locking slides and suck. and the gear usually only runs you about 100-150$ ^_^
@purplecurtisimo It wouldn't take a great deal of creativity or work to make some of the cheap Wal-Mart toys more realistic. It's still only toys that shoot plastic pellets at a low velocity for a short range, nothing more.
Paintball has the benefit of using a larger, heavier ball, so at least you have a better sectional density and ballistic coefficient, and can have an effect outside of 50 yards. And it'll leave paint rather than just bounce off.

@Maggot1750 I've gotten giant welts from paintball, though I'm pretty sure a 6mm pellet is going to leave a much smaller welt than a .68 caliber ball. Not to mention, with the lower sectional density and BC, a .4 gram pellet at 700fps isn't going to have much in the way of energy, my calculator is estimating only 29 fps at 80 yards, with over five feet in drop.

You must not play airsoft, a good hop up makes it so your BB's have virtually no drop until they're out of energy and just drop straight down. And it's not like paintball guns shoot any further, a 300fps paintball gun shoots around 130ft horizontally aimed.

Paint balland airsoft are great I play them both . Average people are more of a piantball crowd that I'v seen . People who are more military minded tend to drift tword airsoft just becouse it look's more realistic . Both cost about the same if you realy get into it on either front .

Ok so I personally think airsoft is more of a hobby and paintball is a sport. Paintball has several divisions (both Speedball and Woodsball). They have Professional teams with sponsors. Sure airsoft is more realistic (in SOME ways) but thats only if you are willing to spend tons of money in a hobby that you cant competivly compete in. If u wanna spend $300 in a hobby try one that you can play proffesional tounaments i would say choose paintball thats my opion...

@TheMamaluigi2 sir you need to get your facts straght, if we wanted to get so incredibly realistic wed just switch to shooting each other with guns, airsoft is as realistic as it gets, im not saying it is USMC stuff exactly, but it gets pretty realistic. we can buy 30 round mags if we want, some people do, but to be practical, we will use maybe 120 round mags, because it would be a pain if we had only 180 rounds or so, this isnt airsoft vs USMC, this is airsoft vs paintball. get out of here.

@TheMamaluigi2 The U.S. military does in fact use paintball guns for certain exercises involving human targets. The same goes with law enforcement. I recently volunteered for a law enforcement exercise as a civilian bystander and the SWAT team that was running the drill was using paintball guns.

@TheMamaluigi2 Because you can't shoot people with a real gun without killing them. Like I said, I just volunteered for a SWAT team training exercise where they used paintball guns. They recruited a bunch of us Criminal Justice students to be civilians in order to produce a realistic hostage situation. The end result was a "dead" criminal. There's no way to conduct that exercise with live rounds unless you want to kill your volunteers.

From a practical standpoint, just because the toys are bigger and realistic looking doesn't change the fact that the principal is virtually identical to those Wal-Mart toys. Dressing up in a few grand of tacticool gear doesn't change that fact.
While I don't play, or am not a fan of either, at least paintball isn't trying to be something that it clearly is not.

@AreThereNoMoreNames the principle may be the same, but the effect is not. the actual high quality airsoft guns are designed to mimic the size, weight, and overall feel of the gun. the expensive guns are quite realistic, most handguns have locking slides and suck. and the gear usually only runs you about 100-150$ ^_^

@purplecurtisimo It wouldn't take a great deal of creativity or work to make some of the cheap Wal-Mart toys more realistic. It's still only toys that shoot plastic pellets at a low velocity for a short range, nothing more.
Paintball has the benefit of using a larger, heavier ball, so at least you have a better sectional density and ballistic coefficient, and can have an effect outside of 50 yards. And it'll leave paint rather than just bounce off.

@Maggot1750 I've gotten giant welts from paintball, though I'm pretty sure a 6mm pellet is going to leave a much smaller welt than a .68 caliber ball. Not to mention, with the lower sectional density and BC, a .4 gram pellet at 700fps isn't going to have much in the way of energy, my calculator is estimating only 29 fps at 80 yards, with over five feet in drop.

You must not play airsoft, a good hop up makes it so your BB's have virtually no drop until they're out of energy and just drop straight down. And it's not like paintball guns shoot any further, a 300fps paintball gun shoots around 130ft horizontally aimed.

@dudrhkd7 accually the army and other mulitary law enforcment use airsoft guns to train and most airsoft players are war vets that are highly skilled. also the military and law enforcment stopped using paintball guns to train because they are unrelistic by haveing a jient hopper on the top that keeps you from aiming and the co2 cylinder on the back that just makes it look silly.

um i am 12 years old and i play airsoft all the time we use gillie suites not walmart guns, sometimes the ocassional vest and play in the woods and ocaisonaly the streets to be like urban warfare but i think it is just wierd to dress up in full military outfits we do things like capture the flag and we even do search and destroy games with pple watching bomb with stop watches we do take it seriously

Paint balland airsoft are great I play them both . Average people are more of a piantball crowd that I'v seen . People who are more military minded tend to drift tword airsoft just becouse it look's more realistic . Both cost about the same if you realy get into it on either front .
