  • nice crash

  • i like that dramatic music

  • The driver who died was Judd Lason and the accident was in 1966. The other driver (who was also killed) was Red Reigel. RIP Jud and Red

  • Saddd, inmediatly death

  • You had to be a man to race those things. Not everyone could do it.

  • @ShagBets Damn right. Hardest things to drive, those old racecars. Thumbs up to you sir.

  • those were the good ole days, sex was safe and race cars were dangerous.

  • you have to be pretty stupid to race a car like that with no roll cage

  • @jimihendrixtribute they did but they werent safe or strong at all

  • Wow, like rag dolls. Yeah go and watch the Isle of Man TT and you have a good chance of seeing something like this, doesnt stop em racin though eh? They must have known the risk of death was high back then just like bikers at the TT know today. Respect.

  • That's why they have ROLL CAGES now!!!

  • @DCSC161 And that wasn't enough for Daryl Dawley and Roger Larson.

  • racing in all forms back then was ridiculous how could you race knowing full-well there is no roof let alone a rollcage to keep you in a car so many people died in racing because of careless attitudes towards safety but all i can say is they died doing something they loved and im happy its alot safer these days.

  • You could say the same thing about a motorcycle today.

  • @chipchuckchop did they even have seatbelts during this era in sprint racing?

  • Holy hell.

  • Heroes. R.i.p.

  • This was racing when men were men. Very dangerous no roll bars Open face helmets. May they rest in peace.

  • No roll cages. Russian roulette. sad.

  • wat's with the arguing over holding the wheel or not? so my 2 cence

    1. it is near imposibble to hold on to a wheel thats jerking back and forth

    2. its a great way to take off thumbs

    3. i was tought, and always have, in any type of wreck let go of the wheel and any type of flip, hold your hands down under the wheel

  • I think they were knocked uncounscious on the first roll. Tri holding anything when you are fainted.

  • DId they use arm restraints back then? I raced TQs for a while..thought you were tough..then you walked up to an old time midget...and wussed out saying you'd never climb in that kind of car...

  • That was brutal...

  • Well they say that every rule in the rule book is written in someone's blood..........those guys had some brass balls to race like that without rollcages.

  • THESE GUYS WERE BRAVE!

  • How long have you two been married? wrist restraints help but g-force rules the cockpit when your going every witch way also my eye balls where beyond blood shot as the force tried to yank em out of their sockets

  • StanBennet,,, It's obvious to everyone that every time you speak you don't know what you're talking about. Have no illusions, I can read better than you. And yes, I have flipped more than one race car. Sometimes in the violence of the accident your hands are torn from the wheel. I wouldn't have to explain this to someone of a higher IQ.

  • Again, do you even know what "spam" means? Besides, you don't know a single thing about me and what I know. So get behind thee Satan!

  • It's obvious to everyone that you don't know much seeing as you "don't get" how your hands can get tore off the steering wheel in a violent crash. Someday when you mature you might understand.

  • @StanBennet

    1) Its obvious you don't know anything about anything.

    2) Using a white stripes album name as a quote is embarrassing rather then cool.

  • StanBennet,, you have NO idea what you are talking about. It's very obvious you just like to jack your jaws.

  • These sprints were mental....Imagine racing with no rollcage!!!

  • no because the wheels get forced from side to side and the wheel turns really fast, especially without powersteering which is one of the problems in my cortina, when i hit the wall, ive already broke my thumb, but these are different, ive been over once and i held my head and stopped tensing because thats what i was taught

  • Most viewers have already clicked you into "spam".

  • Have you ever seen an f1 driver crash from the intake cam? No one NO ONE holds the steering wheel. Braking your wrist means no racing means sitting out for the season. You know better than f1 drivers?

  • @thelizardfolk THE STEERING IN THE F1 CARS IS MARKEDLY DIFFERENT THAN A SPRINT CAR. THE WHEEL IS SMALLER THEREFORE IT'S SPIN WHEN IN A CRASH IS FASTER THAN A WHEEL WITH A LARGER CIRCUMFERENCE. THAT TORQUE IS WHAT CAUSES THE STEERING WHEEL TO SPIN VIOLENTLY. IN f1 AND CHAMPIONSHIP STYLE CARS(indy) IN A WRECK YOU WANT TO RELEASE THE WHEEL.

  • @coachtphoto whell some times it happens so fast that you dont have time to and these are reall really old racecars

  • great video, I wan't to see more of that.

    from which movie this scenes?

  • you cant cross your arms and duck your head when your head just hit the ground going 80 miles an hour and your unconcious.

  • remember when sex was safe and racing was dangerous? and now we have danica and milka

  • what they say you should do when crashing is cross you arms and hold on to the harness and pull your head down toward your chest thats what i was told at racing school anyway.

  • yeah try doin that with all of the g forces on u

  • it will work in a modified i know that because that is what i drive and i had my first flip about a month and a half ago.

  • Sure.

and try holding on when you are unconscious.

  • And try doing it when you didn't expect or see it coming.

  • What video is this and where can you get it?

  • Yes that's his arm hanging out of the car. I've heard that when the driver's arms are flung outside of the car, it's an indication that he is unconscious. Otherwise he would still be holding on to the steering wheel.

  • u never hang on to the steering wheel during a wreck cause it will break ur wrists/and or fingers. i would say him landing on his head and his entire body flopping to the left would be a sign he's a done deal...

  • trust me you would never hold onto the steering wheel when crashing, its one of the worst things a driver can do

( i sprained both wrists in a legends race because of that) the best thing to do is hold them to your body hahaha

  • I don't think during an accident like that you could hang onto the steering wheel even if you tried.

  • @mintedllama When I was racing stockcars in nz (full contact type stuff), If you were having a crash, full speed into wall or rolling, you learn to take your hands off the steering wheel. I didn;t once, ended up breaking 3 bones in the hand and 6 screws to hold it all back together.

  • @mintedllama in cars like that, its not whether or not you could hold on to the steering wheel, there were no roll cages, there was no protection, if they flipped over, they were almost certainly going to die in the wreck.

  • @bigblockbowtie Yes, I think that was the point of my reply to carguy916.

  • @mintedllama you are sapose to let go now so that you can prevent injory

  • @bamkils2 sapose?

  • @bamkils2 injory? Which Ivy League college did you attend?

  • @TRX400ex7681 none at all

  • at 0:52 is tht his arm hanging out side the car?

  • I was at that race. I have mixed feelings about the cars back then. They were beautiful machines and you could see the drivers "working", but they were very, very dangerous. I remember the accident quite well, but I didn't realize until I saw this clip, how violently Reigle flipped also. I must have been watching Larson's car. I remember how bad I felt that these two men died.

  • im 90 percent sure the car comming to rest on it s wheels at end of vidieo is larson, as this was the car i focused on during wreck, but i was 14 yrs old and lots of years have gone by,was sitting in 4 th turn bleechers very close to main grandstand. red reports recently saying the car at end of video is reigle, i disagree with that, what is your yake on that, where were you sitting. thanks RICK

  • Comment removed

  • was at this race, never could i have imagined the historic field i was seeing on the pace lap. jud larson and red reigle die few minutes later, bobby unser wins later 3 time indy winner , the next daytona 500 winner finishes 4th,MARIO don branson 3rd,killed weeks later, even dick atkins was there failed to make feature would die with branson. was only 14 yrs old, but was hooked on sprints, these men with no roll cages had courage i cant even begin to understand

  • i was at this race , reading pa 6-11-66. i lived 2 miles from track, i got jud s autograph about 2 hours before he lost his life. the race was stopped for about hour and half, because both ambulances had to leave , red reigle the other car in accident also lost his life, he lived only 6 miles from track in leesport pa.during delay i talked to dick atkins who failed to qualify abouy the wreck, several weeks later he was killed with don branson. ron lux also killed that year 5 in one year

  • That was really sad for family and fans.....I guess the safety restaints & protection for the drivers have come along way since those days.....I started to watch sprints at Selinsgrove Speedway back in the mid 70's ......Alot of good memories...no one ever died that i'm aware of...

  • why???

  • jesus that's horrible. i remember my dad talking about that accident. never thought i'd see it online, thanks for posting.. i think.

  • thats to bad

  • his arms where out of car

not a very safe car during that time period

  • This era of sprint cars were the most beautiful, but I can't help but look at them and wonder how any driver could survive a serious crash. It looked like he was halfway out of the car when it was flipping. At least now I know what happend to Jud Larsen because I heard so much about him.

The older midgets out of the 30s look even worse, their neck and head stuck above the tailtank. People who drove them back then were nuts.

  • That sux.RIP

  • You are a disrespectful cunt.

  • R.I.P Jud

  • Put more of THESE GUYS ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
