  • The big shit came after independancy. So to see. Freedom.

  • These guys are really good--they're playing these songs in the fanfare style you'd have heard the troops marching to at dress parade or on campaign.

  • 1:15 to 2:30 is Columbia: Gem of the Ocean.

  • Look, I am a Northerner with hge respect for the state's rights ideals.

Otherwise, the Union had every right to take down those red bastards. :P

Every state has the right to quell insurrection.

  • Not to mention medical care had beed virtually unchanged since the 16th century. George Washington was bled to death by his physician. The War Between the States was "self-bleeding".

  • Fortunately, the American civil war took place during a golden age for brass. Unfortunately it was a golden age of weapons technology, causing unprecedented slaughter. Win some, lose some.

  • Some facts re the American Civil War from Wikipedia

"The American Civil War remains the deadliest war in American history, resulting in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers with 400,000 wounded and an undetermined number of civilian casualties. Ten percent of all Northern males 20–45 years of age died, as did 30 percent of all Southern white males aged 18–40."

Those numbers are horrific. Those poor soldiers. They are ALL heroes in my mind. Fighting for freedom. God Bless them all.

  • REMEBER ALL THE BRAVE MAN THAT DIED ON ALL SIDES!

  • How proud these men from both sides in the war look: proud of their uniforms, instruments and, probably, their music as well. Other soldiers photographed at the time showed rifles, pistols and even knives (all tools of their trade, I suppose). Someone else has commented on the zouave uniforms, but what the creator/editor of the video brought to my attention with the movement of his focus was the bandsman with a fancy (?) checkered vest and watchfob under his uniform coat--good work!

  • My Great Grand Uncle was in one of these bands, we have a picture of him with his sax-horn. He was a Chief Musician in the 32nd Infantry North Carolina. These

pictures are really great. I wish I could find more info on his unit. I am a brass playrer and there is so much heritage here its incredible. Any other good websites with info?

  • Great Music. Love it! Nancy B. Brewer- author of Carolina Rain

  • 1:15 to 2:30 is "Columbia: the Gem of the Ocean."

  • LOOK AT ALL THEM CRACKERS !!!! UN- civil war

  • 1:15 to 2:30 is "Columbia, The Gem of the Ocean."

  • good vid

  • Some of those old instruments could have served as muskets in a pinch.

It's difficult to think of those horn players back then, alive, having fun with their buddys and their music, but ultimately in service to war and the inevitable carnage. How many had heads and arms blown off while worrying about their embouchures?

  • Special Note* at 01:18 the illustration depicts the United States Marine Band

  • Can anyone tell me what song is it at 2:33 ??

  • that would be Dixie my friend

  • you mean the leadin into Dixie.....most songs of the era had prologues before the main theme started...

  • No, it is all Dixe. There is a "Hidden verse" to the song called a walkaround. A lot of old song have them but the modernized version cut them out.

  • In theory, it should work. I'm all for it!

However it will never work because of the nature of the majority of us humans (power-hungry capitalists at heart)...

Sorry, but that's just the way it is...

  • China no longer has a socialist economy, which is why it is now an economic success, while in North Korea, the regime is so all-powerful that there is no way for the people to rebel.

  • Actually the reason China has success is because people have to apply to the government to have children and they are limited to 1 child and most of the goods in the world are manufactured in China cheaper there than anywhere else because they have such a large population. Also being communist part of the Communist declaration set down by the Soviet Union was to make sure that every citizen had a job.

  • Yep they no longer have a socialist economy thanks to the good ol USA. Why because you buy everything they manufacture. Meaning all your small town manufacturing companies have closed because China can do it cheaper. Which means China needs the US to buy products and the US needs China to make them. Funny the country that fears Communism the most is in debit to it for a few trillion dollars.

  • I'm not American, I'm British.

  • Actually he would not have because Hitler made the same mistake Napoleon did when invading Russia, He did not take into account the Russian Winter which the Russians could have won the war on there own without England sadly because Russia outnumber England nearly 10 to 1 in population and could repel Nazi invaders easier, They had harsher weather than England which the Nazi's were not used to unlike England where they did there Blitzkreig and had to worry about U-boat threats.

  • Pity for you civil war affectionados, but the second song here is an old pre civil war Royal Navy song--Brittania pride of the ocean and going on to "three cheers for the red, white and blue- the Union Jack. At least the next song "Dixie" is legitimately yours, U.S. of A.

  • Chill out there young sir, if it wasn't for the U.S. of A. you Brits would be the smallest province in the Russian Empire.

  • I's like to know what you've been smoking, because I want some. The Soviet Union didn't collapse because Ronald Reagan got elected, it fell apart because communism doesn't work, it was the second wealthiest country in the world in the 1970's but it couldn't even produce enough bread or meat for it's population.

  • Well the fact that Stalin broke pretty much every rule in the Communist Manifesto didn't really help either lol. The truth is, you can't judge Communism on Stalinism because Stalin was not a true Communist...by the way, what does this have to do with Brass Bands of the Civil War?

  • No joke during stalins rule if you said you wish you had more food, or you wish you had a better job you and your family could be shot or sent to a Gulag. A ruthless, power hungry tyrannt he was

  • it also fell apart cause of a large number of mistakes of the government(i.e. Aral Sea, Cherynobl, war in Afghanistan)

  • @graidstin

Czarnobyl had nothing to do with the Soviet Union... :|

  • well really it did now it wasnt nessecaraly their fault but their reaction to it was bad. Most people in russia didnt know about the incident until a week or more later, and the ironic part is americans knew about cherynobyl before the people that acctually lived there did. thats another problem the USSR they kept too many secrets and they wouldnt take much criticizm, in Stalins day you could get shot or sent to a gulag for saying you wish you had more food ,a better job, a better house, etc.

  • Shut it.

  • super!!!

  • Wow look at all those Saxhorns...

    :D

  • whats a saxhorn?

  • Beautiful! Best brass songs i've ever heard!

  • Thank you for the wonderful video!

  • Great music. One question:

1:15 to 2:30 is what song?

0:00 to 1:15 is "Bonnie Blue Flag."

1:15 to 2:30 is what song?

    2:30 to 4:15 is "Dixie".

4:15 to 5:37 is "Battle Hymm of the Republic."

  • Red White and Blue AKA Columbia Gem of The Ocean

  • Do you know which of these 4 songs would be played in todays US Military events where they are playing for Military ceremonies or entertainment?

Is Bonnnie Blue Flag and Dixie considered a "not to be played song" because of their history of being connected tothe South?

Can you recommend the top 20 most played/best of military songs or suggest how to find them? I'm familiar with the melodies, but I don't know the titles.

The Federal Band's music is so simple but sounds so royal.

  • Would you know of any compilations of US Military music that include 5-10-20 songs that I can listen to online, similar to this one, but even more songs.?

  • 1:15 to 2:30 is "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean."

  • Gem of the Ocean.

  • nice i love the civil war in im band to i play the tuba nice video

  • Fantastic!

  • if you ever wonder what it means to be american-

    its simple-

"it means america owned the Brits"

  • ya mean the Brits own America, and jews probly own sum off it aswel.. The British empire is still there you just can't see it lol

  • you are right the british empire has taken a modern stance, with the same intentions of world domination. however it was the americans who defeated the briths in the war of independence, ---hence the Americans owned the Brits-- E.G - civil war- "the above video"

  • Yeh yeh, civil wa was just in america yeh n i know bout the war of independence, but i think we just let you have that, its all a big plan by the money men. Thats my opinion anyway.

  • FLAWLESS... VICTORY

  • amazing, i am going to work at fort mackinac this year, and i am an historic guide and a musician i can't wait to play this kind of music

  • EXCELLENT!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • columbia, the gem of the ocean

  • even thow im a yank i like southern music

  • ...after you my friend. After all, it's shit before the shovel !!!!

  • American Memeory at the Library of Congress has downloadable facsimiles of the original scores and parts a vast collection of this sterling repertoire - a MUST for all early brass enthusiasts!

  • Brilliant. Loved the photo of the Zouaves.

How many guys play the old over-the-shoulder trombones today?

Are you playing genuine old cornets?

  • The Federal City Brass Band plays on original instruments....

  • Nice video. Thank you.

  • I saw a band play this at PerryVile Kentucky they where very good.i love this song

  • That was your radio then.

  • This was cool to watch because my great great grandfather was beugle player for the union. Great Video.

  • Sounds like we're still fighting this one. My Great Grand Pappy was a musician in the 1st Michigan . They fought through the entire war. He died in 1872 of skin infections from all the marching.

  • like I said union states were free states while the war was going on and the southern states still had slavery, and the slaves caught by the rebels from the union were turned back into slaves and the white officers leading the black union soliders were hung or shot, union used black troops to fight they let them voleenter and rebs refused to let there slaves fight or have any fredom because they was for slavery and the north was trying to do away with it.

  • In the presidential election of 1860, the Republican Party, led by Abraham Lincoln, had campaigned against the expansion of slavery beyond the states in which it already existed. The Republican victory in that election resulted in seven Southern Confederate States of America (the Confederacy). Led by Jefferson Davis, they fought against the U.S. federal government (the "Union"), which was supported by all the free states and the five slaveholding border states continue below -

  • declaring their secession from the Union even before Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861.[1] Both the outgoing and incoming U.S. administrations rejected secession, regarding it as rebellion.

Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

You idoits must have never took high school history or read a book on the civil war... the American civil war was fought over slavery, the union states wasfreestates

  • It,s spelt "Idiots" and "The Union States WERE free states not WAS is correct......p.s. i studied English :-)

  • "It's spelled idoits" I'am glad you took the time to distinguish the few typeo's out of everything I had typed. Hence the reason I'am repling to your pointless comment; the next time you try to enlighten anyone on there fallacious comments you hebetudinious peon make sure you're using correct english and pronunciation or it's a WASTED COMMENT!

Go back and study more english seems you are in dire need of such.

  • IDOITS ???? GET A GRIP MAN .... it,s Idiots

  • negative ye be the one ineed of a grip lol it was a typeo just like your it,s lol so take ye comments else were if u have nothing to contribute.

  • Actually the South was fighting for the right of individual states to decide whether they were to be free or slave. They based alot of that argument on the Revolution where they did not want a large central government(ex. the King of England or a President in Washington, DC) superseding the local governments. Also, most Northerners were fighting to preserve the Union and did not really care about the slaves one way or another.

  • @evaunit01e A sensible answer, a pronounced question. Should a Federal government decide for the individual state, the direction the population of a confederated state should travel? A Union is only as strong as the weakest link among the chains that bind, God Bless All Americans, The right of the individual state was stamped out and subject to a central governments mandate, against the Constitution and Articles of Confederation. We must fight tyranny in all its forms.

  • @evaunit01e Yes and no. The South tried to use that excuse, but you can tell both sides knew slavery was the key issue of the war.

  • And it's "it's" NOT it,s.

  • are you so elementary to belive that the war was fought because of slavery? slavery was a little side issue. It had to do with States rights vs the federal government telling the states what to do. It was acualy illegal for the federal government to make states stay in the union so techicaly it was an illegal action to fight the civil war. And the question is have YOU ever read a book about the civil war?

  • the issues the north and south disagreed about had thier roots in slavery, representation, westward expansion, tariffs, etc... So it's true that the war first about saving the union Licoln realized that it would be impossible to keep it together without destroying slavery. It's to simple to say the war was or wasn't about slavery.

  • Excellent reply DrKorn5. Most Americans never bother to read the archived facts and just consume the popular dribble thats fed to them by the media. Such lemmings. I often wonder how todays America would be if the Confederatess had been victorious.

  • It saddens me that people can be so dumb as to what we were fighting for. Slavery had nothing to do with it at first. Lincoln owned slaves himself.

  • licoln did own slaves he had a possible indentiard servant at his house in illinois but yes it is truley sad that people think it was all about slavery and shit on the south for it.

  • and who are the people that stole the slaves from africa that americans years before the csa was formed

  • Good historical perspective. I didn't know the bslls on the instruments pointed aft. Was this intentional, or had maybe no one thought to put in the extra bend>

  • *Scratch the 9 million-4 million statement*

The Population was 9 million. 5 million were slaves.

  • Also, the south's population was around 9 million. 4 million were slaves (which southerners wouldn't dare give weapons to.) The north's population was far higher. I'm guessing quadruple the size of four million? The south also fought for states rights! If you don't beleive in that your basically stamping socialist on your forehead. The federal government needs not to interfere with citezens. The taxes would be DRAMASTICALLY CUT! At least by 60%. Probably more.

  • Yes, they were fighting for states' rights--the right to own slaves. Not exactly a glorious cause.

  • Hawkeyeshepherd you are an idiot...pick up a book and get a history lesson before you start leaving poor comments

  • Excuse me, sir, but I am a professor of American History. What is your occupation? Professional Hypocrite?

  • Hawkeyeshepherd you are an idiot...pick up a book and get a history lesson before you start leaving poor comments

  • I think the Confederacy should have been given a chance might have made the world a better place!

  • It could sound strange to you but long live the south and confederacy from an Italian friend of Dixieland!

  • Are you people insane? Long live the south?

The south was horrible... What kind of place do you wish we lived in?

  • Was the North 1,500,000% better?

  • Why was the south horrible? Because the north had all the factories and machinery? Because the north kept the capital of the united states even though it was a slave state? Because the south had an extremely high tariff that supported the north? The south only had farming. When the civil war started, the north had 99% more of everything. More population, more machinery letting the north produce far more with better time, and lets not forget how the north didn't have inlation as bad as the south.

  • Excellent Long Live The South!!!

  • long live the south and confederacy!

  • Yar long live the south and confederacy long live the cross bars with stars.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Some definitely weird looking brass instruments.

  • Oh General Lee sir, you were a brilliant commander, tactician and raised the army of northern Virginia which was probably the most infamous or renowned army that walked the planet in your time that you formed and gave it life, but how on earth sir could you order an attack on such a fortifeid position at the heights of Gettysburg. General Sherman you should have been tried for war crimes.

  • HI,

    Confederates migrated to Brazil

20,000 Americans that entered Brazil from 1865 to 1885.

The immigrants settled in various places in Brazil ranging from the urban areas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and Paraná state in the south. But most of the Confederados settled in the area around present-day Santa Bárbara d'Oeste and Americana, cities state of São Paulo.

    Saudaçoes!

  • God Bless the South

  • screw yourself 50barrels you clearly despise liberty and the rule of law, stay in romania

  • Oh, we're the land of liberty now with the Intolerable (Patriot ) Act? The Founding Fathers would be ashamed that we're putting up with this abridgement of our rights. The South was right re: a strong central govt.God bless Dixie!!

  • I was born in Romania and I live in Germany but I love the South :P

  • APPROVED BY THE ANGEL OF MUSIC

  • Why the Northern friends put the blacks in the fireline? Did they know?

  • Well they hardly did it to free them, that's for certain.

  • HooRA HOOra for Southern rights HOORA!

  • Big friends of the Brits, I think you'll find!

  • Who, Southerners? Well, yes and no

  • Well, they built 290 which became the famed Rebel raider CSS Alabama with Raphael Semmes at the helm.

  • If Lee had listened to Longstreet's advice at Gettysburg and marched between Meade and Washington (forcing him to attack), he could have won. The British would definitely have joined the CSA after that. As it was, the ANV and the South in general never recovered from the foul ups that Lee and Stuart made at Gettysburg, and they lost because of it

  • Well thank god that the confederacy lost!

  • Well thank god the confederacy lost!

  • I dunno, I mean, they were going to abolish slavery anyway.

  • Cool video - nothin' like a military band! Check out "Gettysburg" by Michael Chain on Youtube.

  • good ol' re-enacting days. brings back good memories of me and my dad re-enacting

  • This music together with the pictures just brings the Civil War era to life to me...

  • Great !!!

  • We know where dozens of Confederate vets are buried, and every Confederate Memorial Day we go to a couple and honor the fallen. Even in California, we love our Rebel heroes.

  • Just think the people in the photos have been dead for over a century, but their pics will live forever.

  • My wife and I have traveled through the South restoring and preserving cemeteries. We have discovered cemeteries and graves that had been thought to be lost to time. In all of that, I still stand over graves looking at a name and a date thinking, "Who was standing where I am today 150 years ago when this person was laid to rest?" History is to be preserved for one very important reason: If we do not learn from it, we are destined to repeat it!

  • And as well as that, it's to damned interesting to forget

  • A salute to you and your wife For the Work your doing on "Preserving the Cemeteries"

  • thanks for posting. there's some good horn playing there. nice history, too.

  • Doesn't Barney Fife sing the first song while he is dressed up like a cleaning woman in the Mayberry Savings Bank on one episode of The Andy Griffith Show?

  • i guess... i've seen that episode but never thought about that lol. gotta love Andy Griffith.

  • I'm a clarinet player since age 12, played in the Marching Southerners at Jax State (AL). This takes me back to my roots.

  • Great video, loved the music, so stirring and inspirational. Only thing was I couldn't help wonder who all the people were in the photos and where they were all taken. Must have been a story behind each one, sadly, now most likely forgotten.

  • Great video !!

  • I guess this was before they figured out it was easier on those pre-tubas to wrap the bell around your body than to have it extend way out.

  • Great collection. Very well done.

  • The Cicil War? Why, we would be living in a Cicilization!

  • Salute to Tapsbugler ... please find time to play at my funeral... (I'm a vet).

  • enjoyable

  • much better...

  • What could be our life now had the Confederancy won the Cicil War?

  • Bravo!

  • i play the euphonium!

  • Excellent!

  • A very fine collection of photographs and the music was superb as well.
