  • I have a size 3.25mm hook... any suggestions how i should go about it ? ..... should i follow the same counts ?

  • @DSomethingThatsMine You will follow the same count to start. You will need to continue work 2 stitches in the same stitch or space to the crown of the cap continues to expand and get larger.

  • After the extention row I keep ending up with 47 HDC instead of 43 like your video says.............why is that??? Should I not be crocheting between the extentions???

  • TT^TT do u have a lefty version?

  • How come my circle curls?

  • I cant do the magic circle

  • i cant follow you because you dont take the times to show what you are doing and you move too fast... I dont like this video...

  • @mzjazzy328 When I first watching her videos I thought the same thing. But you have to really pay attention to what she's doing. Keep watching it over again until you've got it. Keep pausing the video when you want to catch up or it you want to finish a round.

  • Theresa could you please give me the list of the needles converitng to nos. as here no letter needles are available...Thanks.

  • @PurnimaDlima It is posted on my crochet blog

  • I dont know if ur posted a tutorial for a pedi or yoga socks i have the written instriction from another source, but i would feel comfortable to see it, if possible can u make a tutorial for this pattern. thank you.

  • hi there.. im working with a smaller size hook.. i dont know whats the alphabet it is, but it is smaller. I'm new to crochet. So how should I increase the number of stitches, and where should I increase? thank you :)

  • will a size e crochet hook work that is the only size

  • what is a half double crochet

  • @justinbieberfan842 It's harder to explain than it is to just show it, there's another name for it too, but I'm sure you can just search on how to hdc on youtube.

  • the first hat I made following your instructions came out perfect then I made others following the same instructions using the same hook and they came out super small.. I don't know what the problem is

  • is it ok if i use a J hook? thats he only one i have

  • @Applez2luv Yes a size J hook will work. You may need to adjust and work less increase stitches if you find that cap is working up to large.

  • Actually nevermind! I found out why!

  • Im not sure about round 5 because half of 24 is 12 and 12 x 2 = 24 and 24 + 12 = 36 so wouldnt the total stitches be 36 not 35 so im afraid to go on because of this ..... But is it my mistake or yours? (not to sound rude but just a question) Thanks!~

  • Hi Teresa, I have used a few different patterns by you and you videos are so helpful! I had a question, I've been working on this hat and the number of stitches that I get in the rows are at least 10 more than you say there should be. I noticed it at about row 8 or 9, it was supposed to have 43 stitches and I came out with about 55. I'm not sure how that happened, but I was wondering will that effect how the hat comes out, do you think it will be okay?

    Thanks!

  • @harmonylover18 It is not going to affect the outcome of the hat to much. It may be a little bit larger so towards the end, you may need to compensate by working a few extra decrease stitches at the band.

  • hi Theresa,

Do you have any tutorials for an infinity scarf?? I've been following your tutorials and just love how easy to follow your videos are..but cannot seem to find one for an infinity scarf! :( Thanks much!

  • I want to thank you, Theresa, for sharing your knowledge and easy-to-follow instructions of crocheting. I learned how to crochet a peruvian beanie and made a few for family and friends, finished a scarf for my daughter by following a pattern you demonstrated, and am now in the process of crocheting a Beret for a neighbor to match her winter coats. Thank you, again, Theresa, for sharing your knowledge using either the video or written instructions!

  • hello i made my beret hat and its perrrrfect, i was alittle nervous at first thinking it would end up 2 small. thank you. how do i make a smaller 1 for like a 7 yr old? whats the process?

  • @mrsdreazy05 The easiest way to make a hat smaller is to use a smaller hook. That may not be enough so you will reduce the amount of increase stitches and rounds by working less of them, which will create a hat for a smaller head.

  • @tjw1963 I love your tutorials, I have the same question.....what size hook will be best to make this hat in the size for a 7 year old??? I still want the slouch, just a smaller size! I also want to know if you have a tutuorial for an infinity scarf using a shell stitch! Thanks again!

  • @KJFemi Even if you use a smaller crochet hook, there is going to be some trial and error in getting the correct size for a smaller head. There is not a specific answer to your question because there so many variables that could throw the size larger or smaller.

  • hello i am coming along ok with this pattern, but i am afraid to go pass round 13. my hat is looking like its not long enough to decrease. and i kinda want hat to be slouchy what should l do? idk ,continue on with pattern? i am using redheart brand yarn, looks tighter, i dont wanna get towards end of hat, and than its too tight.

  • @mrsdreazy05 You can safely continue on with rounds to give it more depth and a slouchier look.

  • @tjw1963 excuse me Am noushaba from ksa if u dont mind will you pls give the different size and use ofcrochet needles. am very intrested with espesially your crochet classess

  • Hi Teresa, thank you for the tutorial. I ve made two hats following it, using crochet hook 5.0 mm. The first one is somehow smaller than yours, but looks great! For the second I modified a bit pattern: round 14 i did decrease in every 10th instead of 5th, so i ended with about 55 st. and at 18th round i had about 30 st. I realized that for this pattern yarn should be very SOFT, otherwise the texture would be too firm.

  • @majawow There are many reasons why caps turn out smaller. Some people crochet tighter than others. The yarn used may be slightly smaller and the hooks can vary in size as well. Thank you for sharing your results in solving the size issue.

  • Thanks for posting this! It's the first time I'm trying to make a hat and I find your video's very helpfull. :)

Also it's very smart to use a different color as a marker, I almost panicked when you talked about a marker because I don't have them. I never thought of using a different color... I feel slightly dumb about that :P

But again thanks for making helpfull video's ^^

  • @AkiraNao I just use leftover yarn tails for a marker. It does not have to be anything fancy.

  • I'm A Beginner And Somehow In The Beginning My CIrcle Never Looks Like That. Am I Grabbing The Wrong Strings When I Pull.?

  • @dazinndisaster That will happen if you accidentally catch the tail.

  • I am using an H hook and I follow each of the steps, but around Round 4 my hats starts to curve. I'm at Round 7 and decided to stop because it is really curved. Is there a way to fix this? Am I doing something wrong maybe?? Thanks!

  • Ciao! It's a wonderful project! ^_^ A big kiss from Italy!

  • @azzurra810 A big kiss back to you!! Apprezzo il commento!

  • I love all your instructions Teresa!! How do I make this hat for a child about the age of six or seven?

  • BEST HAT, ILI, THANK YOU....

  • @eva2126 You are welcome.

  • I'm using a chunkier yarn, so I've been using a size M hook. I'm up to Round 9, and I have a feeling it might be way bigger than I want if I follow your pattern exactly. Should I start making it deep and decreasing before you do in your videos? Thanks so much!

  • @Iwatanis If you feel the cap is large enough, you would not want to work anymore increase rounds. At this point you would work it for deepness and then work decrease rounds.

  • @mandunia2012 You didn't offend me. I was just explaining how I ended up with the amount of stitches.

  • @mandunia2012 I often use an increase amount that will not fit in a multiple. What you are doing is evenly increasing. Sometimes I find that I want an extra increase and there may only be a couple extra stitches after. Crochet does not have to be exact mathematically.

  • Can you pleez do a tutorial of the tablecloth in the beginning.... I really wanna know how to make that .... Thank you so much Teresa

  • i like the tablecloth here in this video... it's lovely.. would love to learn how to make it, especially the flower :)

btw, thank you very much for teaching us through your videos <3

  • @angelstylerina I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • good news my mommy took me to get yarn and i'm making this hat

  • omg she emailed me no ones ever emailed me before well at least no one famous you are my idol thank you so much for repling thank you thank you thank you

  • your awsome

  • @maxie1133 Thank you!

  • your numbers were off. i used my stitch marker to mark my rows & i ended up with 44 HDC, Ch1 after row 7.

  • @tvbx520 I have the written instructions posted on my crochet blog.

    crochet-mania.blogspot.com/2008/03/blog-post_13.html

RND 6: HDC in ea sp. – (35 HDC, CH 1 total)

    RND 7: HDC INC every 4 St’s. – (8 increases) (43 HDC, CH 1 total)

RND 8: HDC, CH 1 in ea sp. – (43 HDC total)

  • I have no idea how you started it...cos you just said something technical and put the needle through

  • @01375855885 i totally agree with you. its like i was hearing her then all of a sudden she said some magic words and then her hat was started

  • I love your video....was very easy for me to follow. However, when I finished it, it was too small for me, and I am small to average size. How do I make it fit me? Also, thought I would make it more full like Regae style, as you suggested after step 16 (I think that is where you said that), but how do I make it fuller?

    Thanks...

  • @topkat2u There are several reasons why the cap may come out smaller. The yarn you used could have been smaller. It could be the crochet hook or the tension. The easiest way to make the cap larger is to use a larger crochet hook. You can also use more increase stitches and increase rounds to make it fuller.

  • Theresa girl...you are super amazing. My beret turned out lovely. You videos are super easy to follow and simple...The kingston hat is a little more challenging lol...but its all good. :)

  • @nhyh Thank you. Keep practicing and you will get the hats that may be more challenging.

  • Im sorry after Step 9 i gave up :(

  • sorry i meant towards the end of round 5, not 4. Thanks

  • thank you. So on round 4 where you have 35 hdc, at the end of that round you end with ..... space 33 2 hdc, space 34 hdc, space 35 hdc? Many thanks

  • on round 4, where you do hdc and then hdc twice in the next space does that count as 3? or just 2 because they've been done in 2 spaces? many thanks

  • This is the increase so the cap expands and gets larger. Each stitch is an individual stitch.

  • sorry I mis counted my stitches. it's correct now. Thank you for your videos they are a great help. I am following all of your videos and I have only just started crochet. Thanks again

  • i keep getting 20 hdc on round 3. what am i doing wrong? Many thanks

  • I'm making dis right now!!! but can you also make a turorial on how to make a tam hat...i wuld really appreciate it

    Thanls again

  • could you do this sort of hat using a puff stitch?

  • I have been thinking about doing one with the puff stitch.

  • Sorry to be a bother but I need to find out how to actually begin the crochet work- I can't just do it without seeing from beginning to end of the crochetting- I've been able to knit scarves but I'm very new to this so yea...

  • I will send you the playlist for the basic crochet stitches.

  • @tjw1963 Can you send me the playlist too? I'm quite confused about everything. (-.-)

  • @IheartPbear I am sending you the playlist.

  • Just wanted to stop by and say thanks! Everytime I want to start anew crochet project you have a video for it! You explain everything so well and I really appreciate you making yor videos!

  • Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it. Happy crocheting.

  • -sigh-

i dont think i was meant for this, been trying for the past month every single night .... i can't even get past the circle ^_^

  • How about you try a different pattern. Maybe a beanie cap first?

  • Alright,

    :P i will

    thanks

  • can this hat be done with doulble crotchets?

  • Yes, you can do all double crochet if you want to make it solid.

  • can you do this w/ single crochet?? i just started learning this yesterday soo....HELP! i want to make a beret for my friend.

  • Yes, you can do this with the single crochet. The pattern will need modified to compensate for a smaller cap.

  • can i do this hat in just double crotchet?

  • I don't understand any of this,

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh.

  • Thank you very much for these wonderful videos! I know you have a million questions, but I hope you can help with this one ...

I LOVE this beret pattern. But, I need to make it in a stich that isn't so loose ... that's more "dense" (hope that makes sense). This is for a really warm hat. This 1/2 DC is too open of a stitch, wind would blow right through!

Is there a simple method to substitute a different stitch or make this one more closed? Thank you very much!!

  • What you can do is replace the chain and work solid half double crochet instead. I hope that makes sense.

  • thank you for this video!

i made my very first hat yesterday; it's like the only project i've ever finished!

it may be a little loose but it's pretty good for my first try.

    again, thanks so much!

  • Part 2 of query:

Also, could you help me with what size hook would I need to acheive a similar sized hat using the following yarn weights:

    4 ply (US sport weight)

    Double knit (US worsted weight)

    Aran (US fisherman/medium weight)

I love your videos - but so far have only managed granny squares and I am sooooo desperate to try something else.

Thanks for any help you can give.

  • The I hook is equal to a 5.5mm crochet hook.

  • Hi Teresa - HELP!!

I am desperate to crochet this beret but I am a little confused as to what hook sizes would be needed for different weight yarns (especially with the differences in English/US terminology)!

Your video says "4 ply worsted weight yarn" - my confusion starts there! Do you mean English 4 ply (which I believe Americans refer to as sport weight), or American worsted weight (which we call double knit)?

  • I used 4 ply worsted weight as mentioned in the video. It is not a sport weight yarn since I count 4 plys that make up the twist.

  • Thanks Teresa - you're great!

Guess I need to go shopping tomorrow to get the right hook size :-).

What hook size would I need to make the hat in sport or fisherman weight and achieve the same sort of sizing?

    Thanks again!

  • Maybe a 3.75mm crochet hook and sport weight yarn. You will need to modify using more increase stitches if you use smaller yarn. If you make the hat as it is without modifying, it will come out smaller.

  • Wow - you not only know your crochet, but you are super speedy at replying!

I wish you lots of luck for the future (and hope to see lots more videos in the coming years!.

    Best wishes,

    Ezrismom.

  • Thank you. I am caught up on comments for a change otherwise it may be a day or two before I answer.

  • hi Teresa,

i`ve finished my ever first crochet! im so happy and proud of myself! lmao! was so frustrated at first because the hook sizes that i got were both small! but i really wanted to make this beret so i tried your advice to adjust the stiches, and i did it perfectly! i so so much love my beret.i was uploading my vid reply but for some reason im getting an error. i wanted to show it to you.. thank you so much Teresa! im doing a scarf next.. this is addicting :) thanks again!

  • I am happy that you were able to adjust your stitches and get a size for you. Now you have that understanding of how to make a hat out of any size yarn and hook.

  • hi thersa im having trouble for the part after you join the chain together in just the first step. can you maybe do a video that is a bit slower and a video that can actually lets me see the needle with out your hand covering it? this will be greatly appreciated.

  • how do i keep it from rolling up help

  • Hi there! I am on round 9 right and like for some reason, I keep ending up with more than 50 stitchest. I have didn't have yarn of another color so I put a safety pin on round 2. I've been counting each round to make sure it matches the # of stitches and i place a rubber band in that space. But on round nine, it's ending a few stitches before it gets to the rubber band.

  • This is one of those projects that does not have to be exact. Since you are pretty close, I suggest that you continue working the pattern. With extra stitches, it may turn out that the cap is a little bit to large, but you can make that up on the end with a few extra decreases. Hats are some of the easiest projects in crochet to work with.

  • thanks you! I am almost finished with my hat, I am actually working on this one and on a puff stitch hat. I just spent a while reading your blog *_*, time goes by fast lol.

  • Can I use the magic corcle instead of the 3 chains?

    Thanks!

  • Please could you tell me what mm size hooks H and I are please as I am in the UK and we have our hooks in mm sizes. Many thanks.

  • google conversion of crochet hooks, thats what i did and had them all written down, but left it at home before i moved to uni! =] x

  • hiya, just googled it for you:

    H size is 5mm

    I size is 5.5mm

    hope that helps :)

  • mm means milimeters a size H hook would be 5.00

    K?

    Hope this helped

  • I love all your tutorials and have made some amazing pieces off of them. Would you happen to have a pattern or tutorial video for the "new" style berets that have subtle designs in the stitches?

  • I am working on a scarf with the "galaxy" stitch I learned from another video of yours (it's turning out great!) and I can't wait to make a matching hat using this! Your videos are so amazing! The best tutorials I have found.

  • Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it. Happy crocheting.

  • instead of counting, you could always just crochet to youre beginning marker right? or would it turn out differently if you did that?

  • When you are increasing, you may want to move your yarn marker every couple of rounds if you are going to do that. Working in the continual round and increasing will cause the yarn marker to shift to the right, while your starting stitch may shift to the left. Once the increase rounds are done, there is no reason to count any longer so you can remove the yarn marker.

  • you are very talented

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you. :) Happy crocheting.

  • i dont have a size I hook or a size H hook. I only have size 6. Could i use that?

oh, im a begininner, would this be too difficult for me?

  • Since you are a beginner, I would recommend another pattern right now. That hat will turn out smaller if you make it without modification. You will need a good understanding of increasing and how to modify a pattern. I will suggest a flower or a granny square, something where the size will not matter right now.

  • I cannot get the thing with counting.

I did (I suppose) everything like you in the vid and in the round 3 the number of spaces is 10 without the beginning space (so - multiplying by 2 of HDC - there're 20, not 24 spaces to pull through)... whatsmore: im not sure if i had enough holes to manage with 12 HDC in round 2 without "jumping" to the next round. I'm a little frustrated... I tried to do this 3 times, and problems are coming back again. Please, help.

  • You will have a yarn marker to mark the beginning round. Just keep working along forward and not worry about what you have already done. As long as you are getting the increases it will work. This is one of those projects that does not have to be exact. If you do not move your yarn marker occasionally, you will see a shift. If several rows have passed and you are stopping at the yarn marker, you are stopping to early.

  • thank you. I watched a video from threadbanger and the lady said to keep it straight so i wasnt sure. I finished mine and i like it so much better. I made a pom pom too and put it on the top. Its so cute!

  • The different patterns will play a role in how they lay. The hat will lay different with each pattern.

  • do you have to keep the hat flat while you are going or do you just go with the flow because it should stay flat by itself

  • The only thing that needs to be done is follow the instructions correctly and the hat will lay how it is supposed to.

  • do you have a beginners video?!...I forgot how to do the chain...and that was the only thing i actually learned before my aunt died; she's the one who was teaching me

  • Ms. Theresa you are the best teacher I havee evr had you break it doowwnn. Your videos are so clear and very detailed thank so much for teaching me how to do this before it was so foreign to me. And now im teaching people isnt that something lol.

  • It is great to hear that you are able to help others learn to crochet now. I appreciate the comment. Happy crocheting. :)

  • Help!

What does it mean if the cap starts to feather up by the second or third round???

Isn't it suppose to be completely flat until the 12th round??

  • That means you are not increasing correctly. Some of the stitches will have two stitches in the same stitch or space which will make the hat lay out flat and get larger.

  • i am REALLY confused!!!! i dont know what to do!?

the whole beggining is really just confusing me!?

Can you possibly help me out?

  • What do you need help with?

  • Hi Teresa, u might can't hear it anymore, but just like others i can't hold myself back; i really need to let you know since i accidentally clicked on one of your videos and watched it, it inspired me to start crocheting. I spend less time with my nintendo ds and start spending more time of something creative. My mom is so proud of me lol ...

btw. i'm pretty new on youtube, so yea ... feel honored that i just joined to comment on your videos! :D:D:D *jk*

  • Thank you, I appreciate the comment. Write or comment any time if you need help finding something. :)

  • Wow, you're a pro!!

I used to be able to crochet, but only the chains. Now I completely forgot. haha

Thanks so much for posting this! I'm gonna attempt to make a beret - they're my favorite hats!!

Btw, I love the very first beret of yours you showed, it's so CUTE! I love everything about it :D

  • I am sure that it will come back fast since you have experience with crochet. Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it.

  • i did mine up to the 7th row and it didnt end up like your because your is like all nice and stright out and mine is like round and round..i know that i did sumthing wrong but not sure where???

  • thanks very much. this video helped me finally learn this pattern.

but is the cap supposed to be bending like its becomin a skull cap?

  • Thank you. If it were made to small, then it may not fit right.

  • Thank You so much! I have one more question, can u add an extra row for 12-13 to make the floppy party a bit longer?

  • You can add as many rounds in that area as you would like. It will just make it longer. You can also add another increase round if you want it larger around and longer.

  • I really appreciate this video! However, can you also just double crochet everything instead of half double crocheting?

  • Yes you can use double crochet. It may be slightly larger on the band so it may be necessary to decrease more.

  • Your great. You explain every step great. Thank you so much.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thanks you so much for these easy instructions. I just started crocheting two weeks ago and I learned how to make a beret with your video. I also looked at your beginning level videos. Again, thank you.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • you need to go slower.all im hearing are hdb etc.

  • HDC, saying Half Double Crochet hundreds of times becomes a tongue twister so the abbreviation is easier to say at times.

  • haha the first time i tried this it was like 5 sizes to big! so im gonna try to redo it.... i think i added to many HDC's in the beginning........

  • Oh, & also, I have a sort of question. I was under the impression that the size of the hook depended on the wool/yarn you were using. Or does that not matter?

  • There are a variety of hooks that can be used with your choice of yarn. For example, you can use a size G-L crochet hook with 4-ply yarn. If the project is a hat, where size is an issue, it will be best to use a hook the recommended size or close in size, otherwise the hat will not fit. There is always an amount of modification that can to done to adjust for a slightly larger or smaller hook. If the hook is several sizes larger or smaller, the whole pattern will need modified.

  • ever since I've learned to crochet I've wanted to make a beret :) Thank you very much!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • I really appreciate your easy to understand directions. I am in the attempt of making my first crocheted hat/beret. I have one question--my mil uses metric needles-hooks. Instead of your sized crochet hook...I have a size 6.0 hook...will that be ok or will the hate look smaller? What can I do to make sure it is still big enough for my own or another persons head?

    Thank you! :D

  • Thank you. A size 6mm hook will make the cap larger. Each person has their own individual crochet style and tension. Maybe you will come close with the size 6mm hook.

  • Do you think this would work well with something as fine as hemp?

  • I have never worked with hemp.

  • Teresa,

I just want to thank you for ALL of your crochet videos. These have helped me more than any books I have boughten. They are so helpful and very clear and not too quick. I"ve made several of the crochet beret's and everybody loves them. Thanks again for your time and talents.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Could you tell me the gauge on this pattern please. Many Thanks!

  • 9 HDC CH 1 - 4"

    12 rows - 4"

  • Your a star!

    Thank you :-)

  • how do you make a chain 3??..=S

  • I sent you a link for the beginner crochet stitches.

  • mine starts bunching up after round four, the bigger it gets the better the middle looks but the edges are still bunched together :/

  • What do you mean by bunched up?

  • like there's not enough room for all the stitches i've made so it starts to bundle up.. it kind of looks like a carnation flower just around the edges.. maybe it'd help if i could get a picture of it

  • There are instructions posted on my crochet blog. It sounds like you may have done to may decreases.

  • Comment removed

  • i have a problem.

in round 7 i did exactly what the instructions said and ended up w/ 43HDC then in round 8 when i just HDC in every sp i ended up with 44.

i am so frustrated i don't get what i did wrong. i've undone it more than 6 times!

    PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • This is the type of crochet project that has some flexibility to the actual pattern. It is worked in a continual round too. It is not necessary to rip the whole thing out for 1 stitch. With the continual round, the starting stitch shifts to the left if you leave your yarn marker in 1 place. The yarn marker will shift to the right. If you end your round at the yarn marker and have not moved the marker, you will not be making enough increase stitches. I would not worry about 1 stitch.

  • okay!

    thanks so much:D

  • I'm on round 4 when there is one HDC per space.

does the space between the previous two stiches in one space count as spaces?

  • Yes, that is your increase so your cap will get larger. When you do increases of 2 stitches in each space, that is to make the cap get larger and lay flatter. The next round you do the HDC in each space around so it continues to lay flat.

  • Thank you very much! I finished the beret and it looks great!

  • You are welcome. :)
