ENGLISH
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
SCOTS
Aw human sowels is born free and equal in dignity and richts. They are tochered wi mense and conscience and shuld guide theirsels ane til ither in a speirit o britherheid.

This is tremendous - and I hope it helps keep the Scots langage alive..........British Government are terrified to give Scots 'National Language' Status and will only give it a 'Regional Language' status.....does that tell us ScotLAND is regarded as a Region or what ? Brilliant upload :-) Many thanks :-) I have shared this with loads of people.....
@aaron5115 Accents are not dialects. Monolingual anglophones struggle so badly to understand real Scots (not Scottish English) that they have MUCH less understanding compared to a Norwegian listening to a Swede. Yet we are happy to say Norwegian and Swedish are two different languages. You wouldn't understand a fraction of real Scots, most Scottish people don't, and yet you compare it to a Mancunian accent. The European Charter is happy to call Scots a language, maybe you should be too.
@Pawnbroker00 Are you saying that it can't be a language because some people are trying to point out it is one? Or that it can't be a language because only x amount of people speak it? Neither of these reasons are linguistic. If you're point is that this is all political, then so what? Nobody has a problem with Norwegian, Swedish and Danish existing as languages instead of dialects and that's mostly political.
@TheChielMeister It's not a language. Anyone can talk fast/put on their strongest accent mixed up with some local slang (slang is changing everyday) and call it a "new language', in that case.
@razryan Scots is classified as a "traditional language" by the Scottish Government, classified as a "regional or minority language" under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, ratified by the United Kingdom in 2001 and also classified as a "traditional language" by The North/South Language Body. It was once the language of the royal court and can still be used at the Scottish Parliament. Glad you enjoyed it anyway.
@razryan Thought I should point out also that there is nothing "new" or made up about Scots. It originated in Scotland as early as the 7th century evolving from Northumbrian Old English. It went through many changes and absorbed much vocabulary from other languages too. Even Modern Scots dates from as far back as 1700 or so.
@aaron5115 .............well sorry the Chielmeister is 100% correct.....we are talking about languages not accents - Scots is a language......not an accent nor a dialect......in fact there are 5 officailly recognised dialects of Scots - but even that is way too simplified to cover it.......as they say.....awa n bile her heid :-) ken whit ah mean likes ?? (East Coast Lowland Scots Example) Try saying that to someone from Kent and look at their reaction.....
@boyblue62 There is a story about an Inverurie farmer who was treated to a skiing trip by his daughter and son in Aviemore. In the rental shop he was obviously having problems getting his boots to fit, and he allegedly came up with this gem to express his frustration and yelled out "Fit fit fits fit fit??!!" Think about - three meanings to the same word 1. What 2. Foot 3. which So tell me, do you think the average speaker of the "Queens English" would regard that tirade as simply a dialect?
@aaron5115 It's not a dialect at all, unless it's 'Scottish standard English' (talking English with a Scots accent), Broad Scots is an entirely different language from English, the only thing they have in common is that they are both partly from a similar old Germanic line of languages, as opposed to 'Scots-Gaelic' which is more from a Celt line.
Scots-Gaelic also partly influenced 'Broad Scots' and was partly supplanted into it - further distancing it from English.
@segano1 I think this is what most folk don't get. They seem to reason that if they can understand a bit of it then it must be a dialect. Only in the British Isles is this possible. Take anywhere else, say in Europe, where you have populations who have a certain degree of mutual intelligibility between their language and that of their neighbours in other countries or regions. They don't go about saying one is a dialect of another. Occitan is a language, Galician is a language, etc.
@TheChielMeister That's exactly what it is, some ignorant people south of the border even believe that the Scots language came from English, when it's actually just because they once had a common tongue before they evolved through different paths until they separated as different languages. It's just good ole' simple ignorance spread on by the ignorant to the clueless.
@TheChielMeister They fail to realise that Scots and English are separate in much the same way as other closely related pairings, such as Danish to Norwegian, Dutch to German, Irish to Scottish Gaelic, or Spanish to Portuguese.
I recommend this new informative website that has just recently been launched in preparation for the latest ten yearly national census of 2011 called "Aye Can", it's all about the Scots language.
@TheChielMeister Also there's an excellent in depth 10-part series essay by Paul Kavanagh on all the Scottish languages ever spoken in Scotland from the first known end of a time scale up to today from ancient Pictish to influencing Scots-Gaelic, Broad Scots & the influences of English to broad Scots post 1707 act of of union with England.
You'll find it on the 'Newsnet Scotland' site, you'll need to go down the site and go to the 10th page to see view it now as the site is updated regularly.
@HaggisPowah I'm just curious as to why certain people are so against the idea that it may well be a language in its own right. It's like they're so determined it isn't, even if they don't have a coherent linguistic or political argument. They just don't want it to be for whatever biased anglocentric sentiment they have. There are plenty of languages which are classed as such which have more mutual intelligibility between them than Scots and English, but they don't want to talk about that.
@boyblue62 Homogenizing languages throughout an empire is the favourite passtime of those who wish to rule. French governments have tried for centuries to purge Occitan, Breton and other languages from their land, General Franco tried to stamp out Catalan. A language represents an identity and there is nothing worse for the 'UK' government than the Scots having one or two of their own. Kids were belted in state schools for speaking Scots and not being good little unionists.
@TheChielMeister .........totally 100% agree - I was pulled up lft right and centre for speaking Scots when I was at school and I still find it easier to write English than Scots as I was never taugt how to write Scots.....we only got the odd Burns Poem as a quaint example........and this was of course at the time the Labour Government took Scottish History off the official National Curriculum and lying about certain oil reserves off Scottish waters.......concern over London losing Big money....
@00acleland I'm not surprised, as I pointed out this is more Scottish English that pure broad Scots. Many of the English words and even English sounding ones in this tune have other cognates in Scots, some of which you may or may not be able to figure out. In any case, understanding it is not a reason for saying it's not another language. Portuguese speakers can understand much of spoken Spanish and understand practically everything written without even having studied.
@TheChielMeister Errr .... "Scottish English" ??? I beg to differ ... this is definitely Scots and I defy the average "English speaker" to giving a proper translation.
@HaggisPowah To be fair, I think my tune here is a mix. There are a lot of English words which I didn't translate to keep the rhythm and to make it rhyme. The next time I should do a full on Scots one with no written translation given. I'm fairly sure listening comprehension would be significantly less than 50%
@TheChielMeister Most of English words actually came from the merchants back when the UK was a trade hub of sorts. whenever a new product was brought to Market that had never been seen before. The merchants would simply ask them what it's called and then crudely attempt to copy the word as one for their own.
@boyblue62 Fair point, but that wasnt really "Scots".. Would you call cockney a language? Same thing, really. The original language of Scotland is gaelic! :)
They were surveying the public today on the Scott Mills show on BBC Radio 1, asking who was the best person to come from Scotland. I would of put your name forward buddy
You are absolutely brilliant. A talent that needs to be spread worldwide. If this is your own material then you need to be doing gigs or making a DVD. I produce DVD's. If you are interested give me a buzz. Thanks for making my day.

@TheChielMeister That's exactly what it is, some ignorant people south of the border even believe that the Scots language came from English, when it's actually just because they once had a common tongue before they evolved through different paths until they separated as different languages. It's just good ole' simple ignorance spread on by the ignorant to the clueless.
segano1 11 months ago
@TheChielMeister They fail to realise that Scots and English are separate in much the same way as other closely related pairings, such as Danish to Norwegian, Dutch to German, Irish to Scottish Gaelic, or Spanish to Portuguese.
I recommend this new informative website that has just recently been launched in preparation for the latest ten yearly national census of 2011 called "Aye Can", it's all about the Scots language.
segano1 11 months ago
@TheChielMeister Also there's an excellent in depth 10-part series essay by Paul Kavanagh on all the Scottish languages ever spoken in Scotland from the first known end of a time scale up to today from ancient Pictish to influencing Scots-Gaelic, Broad Scots & the influences of English to broad Scots post 1707 act of of union with England.
You'll find it on the 'Newsnet Scotland' site, you'll need to go down the site and go to the 10th page to see view it now as the site is updated regularly.

I don't understand why people argue about whether Scots is a dialect or an accent. It's neither. I look upon it as an "almost language". :)
HaggisPowah 11 months ago
@HaggisPowah I'm just curious as to why certain people are so against the idea that it may well be a language in its own right. It's like they're so determined it isn't, even if they don't have a coherent linguistic or political argument. They just don't want it to be for whatever biased anglocentric sentiment they have. There are plenty of languages which are classed as such which have more mutual intelligibility between them than Scots and English, but they don't want to talk about that.
TheChielMeister 11 months ago
@boyblue62 I'd say it's more because Scots isn't a language, it's a dialect.
ColonelColostomy 1 year ago
@boyblue62 Homogenizing languages throughout an empire is the favourite passtime of those who wish to rule. French governments have tried for centuries to purge Occitan, Breton and other languages from their land, General Franco tried to stamp out Catalan. A language represents an identity and there is nothing worse for the 'UK' government than the Scots having one or two of their own. Kids were belted in state schools for speaking Scots and not being good little unionists.
TheChielMeister 1 year ago 2
@TheChielMeister .........totally 100% agree - I was pulled up lft right and centre for speaking Scots when I was at school and I still find it easier to write English than Scots as I was never taugt how to write Scots.....we only got the odd Burns Poem as a quaint example........and this was of course at the time the Labour Government took Scottish History off the official National Curriculum and lying about certain oil reserves off Scottish waters.......concern over London losing Big money....

@boyblue62 I'm English and if I read the lyrics I can understand what he's saying.
00acleland 1 year ago
@00acleland I'm not surprised, as I pointed out this is more Scottish English that pure broad Scots. Many of the English words and even English sounding ones in this tune have other cognates in Scots, some of which you may or may not be able to figure out. In any case, understanding it is not a reason for saying it's not another language. Portuguese speakers can understand much of spoken Spanish and understand practically everything written without even having studied.

@TheChielMeister Errr .... "Scottish English" ??? I beg to differ ... this is definitely Scots and I defy the average "English speaker" to giving a proper translation.
HaggisPowah 11 months ago
@HaggisPowah To be fair, I think my tune here is a mix. There are a lot of English words which I didn't translate to keep the rhythm and to make it rhyme. The next time I should do a full on Scots one with no written translation given. I'm fairly sure listening comprehension would be significantly less than 50%
TheChielMeister 11 months ago
@TheChielMeister Please do - I'd love to hear it - and see the "Well it's still English" comments vanish :)
HaggisPowah 11 months ago
@TheChielMeister Most of English words actually came from the merchants back when the UK was a trade hub of sorts. whenever a new product was brought to Market that had never been seen before. The merchants would simply ask them what it's called and then crudely attempt to copy the word as one for their own.
Dreadnaught1985 10 months ago
@boyblue62 Fair point, but that wasnt really "Scots".. Would you call cockney a language? Same thing, really. The original language of Scotland is gaelic! :)
