any chance of a shot of whats there now? i used to teach at reigate priory a few years ago... hope they've put another pond there instead - was great to walk there with the children for inspiration!
Wait wait wait, Did you say they've destroyed the pond?? Nooooooo waaaaaay!!! I'm Reigate born and bred but moved away when i was 18 and i'm shocked!! I went to the Priory School and i can't believe they're doing that!!
Hola superfurrymark.
There's barely 6" of water in there with the amount of silt - ecosystem? what ecosystem? I guess you knew that being such a frequent visitor..
With new vegetation (s/thing severely lacking in the lake as seen with the dredging process) it's likely a much more 'natural' ecosystem will emerge, rather than the forced Victorian park lake habitat that was previously there.
The proof will be in the pudding when the wildlife returns. Sure you aren't just protesting for protest's sake?
Hi superfurrymark. You are right! it is not protest for its own sake. The roots of the trees have been damaged! There seems to have been no regard for the trees! Like the workmens apparent appreciation of this musical lament!! At least I appreciate the bits of tree the instrument is made from!
Don't fret, the birds are being monitored or relocated, in the end i think it will be better for them, That pond was pretty manky and they will improve it. There may be disruption and upset in the short term, but for the long term it will have more postive effects.
It`s a shame the breeding pair of swans on the lake weren`t relocated before the cob was viciously attacked by someones dog (Surrey Mirror, March 19)!
The owner of that dog (who didn`t stick around), should maybe be relocated to the lion enclosure at London Zoo!!!.
Hi Lagwagon555. The Priory Park work being carried out has been supported with a national lottery grant and funding totaling 6.6 million pounds. The justification for the whole project is dubious.
As Tegid66 points out, there has been a major disruption to the ponds birdlife!
The ponds swan pair (in the past) have had to put up with loosing their cygnets!
Now they have not much chance of having cygnets at all.
The bulldozers have disturbed the birds'nest-building. They've removed the top layer of sediments which the ecosystem feeds on
They've ripped 4 tennis courts, playgrounds and sports facilities - just so that they can have a croquet lawn and sunken gardens surrounded by york stone.
What good is that to the community? It'll be great for anyone wanting to deal drugs because the police won't be able to get anywhere near it at night.

Hi love2love1981. At the point of making the video, the pond had been drained for dredging the silt. It has since been refilled.
For some reason all of the yew hedge around the sunken garden in front of Priory School has been removed. I will post a video as it is 1 year on.

thank you nixart... what a shame the hedge has gone, made it look rather grand!

That also destroyed the idea of what we used to (when young) call the "lovers bench" in those gardens. Although things have changed!
Sadly there has been a some serious vandalism in the park.
But that is not an excuse for the Council to do even worse!

It is sad to see the lake drained and so empty, but hopefully it'll all look good in the end.

Oh my god... I used to go to this school! But I moved to New Zealand. What are they doing to the pond? God that brings back memories.

And what is wrong with the progressive rock band Status Quo? The lead singer Rick Parfitt was, after all born in Redhill!

Millennium Dome style redevelopment, never mind the spelling, what are you talking about?
Nothing wrong with a bit of progress when the status quo is not good enough

Sorry, missed out the dash. Mini-lenium was the word. What is wrong with altering the language. That isn`t set in stone. Is it?
