So US buys the petrol from europe, and europe keeps the waste product. Thats why diesel is cheaper than petrol in europe. So because its cheaper and has better fuel economy diesel is very popular
Once diesel becomes more popular they will stop buying petrol from europe and increase their own production hence price will drop
quick question: how come on the british VW site they list their TDI engines as being able to produce sometimes in upwards of 60 to almost 70 miles to the gallon, yes gallon, when the US websites always list them as only around 40 or so?
because they have many different engine types for the tdi in europe. If you checked the engines you would see that some produce half the horsepower as the american tdi which allows the engine to use less fuel.
Europe measures fuel using the Imperial gallon (~4.546L) whereas the US uses a liquid gallon (~3.785L), which may account for some of the disparity in mpg.
mmm, shiny. god i hope to get this car sometime after graduating college. it just seems like it has everything, sporty looks, extremely fuel efficient, quick, and a pretty good price too. how i'd love one so.
"surprising amount of room for a hatchback" lines like that are the reason why people don't like hatchbacks in the US because they think they are small.
Americans want diesel cars but there are none to buy! The TDIs are hard to come by. I had to order my 09 Jetta TDI and it took like half a year to receive. There does seem to be more 2010 Jettas available with diesel though now than when I got my 09.
VW is not bringing the TDIs into america fast enough. I know soooo many people who want the Jetta TDI. The Golf TDI is just amazing, Mfg in germany, and has the extra options that the previous rabbit did not have. I would love to have a Golf TDI for daily use. I hope VW continues making the Golf/GTI/Passat/CC/Touareg in Germany after the amercan factory is built.
bloozboy5 - Nice facts on VWs being the poorest cars in terms of reliability. I currently own a VW with 135,000 miles on it, daily driver purchased in 04, never had a issue with the car. I've owned a GTI with over 60k on it, no issues. My dad owns a GTI with over 60k no issues. My sister and mom each own a Jetta with over 50k on both no issues. A couple friends own a rabbit and a passat, over 90k on the passat, over 40 on the rabbit. No issues.
@welditup85 8-10 years ago? i have a 2000 golf tdi and it still works like new, i just passed 150k miles and cant complain. i remember hearing that they outsourced to mexico but i thought that was around the 03-05 ish years
I agree. I'm lookin at gettin an 05 golf tdi. My 98 jetta tdi has 260k miles. no typo. the engine is in perfect condition, and i still get 40+ combined MPG.. yeah the interior is kinda cheap, but the powertrain is amazing, and I still have no rust. thats reliable..
But statistics and studies have shown diesels engine outlive/outlast longer when compared to gasoline powered engines due to their durability. Hope this helps somewhat.
It may take time for the transition to occur in the states b/c Americans have accustomed to gasoline powered vehicles. TDI's are for on great on fuel economy compared to their gasoline engined counterparts. Diesel engines are more sturdy and reliable due to their construction. Cons: diesel fuel is still more expensive compared to gasoline b/c of the taxes imposed, they are more expensive to maintain b/c diesel parts don't come cheap compared to gasoline engine parts.
They are popular because of their diesel engine (save A LOT on gas), auto VW is a very reliable car manufacture, and last but not least...they are not American cars, meaning they are not cheap and won't fall apart on you like American cars will.
Im getting 2010 Golf TDI this month and trust me if you want a car like this then VW golf TDI is the way to go. Hope that helps.
Goldenboot1983 - VW's - are consistently one of the poorest cars in terms of reliability. Don't get me wrong, I think they look great, they're well appointed, they handle nicely but reliability is by NO means the reason to get a VW. I usually buy Japanese for that reason but I was surprised (and I think you would be too) to see that North American vehicles, especially GM are greatly improved in quality. Buick is #1 on the 2009 JD Power Vehicle Dependability study. VW is 2nd last
@bloozboy5 I still own a 1996 Volkswagen Passat TDI with 187,000miles. I have never had any mechanical problems as far as the engine goes with this car. Mainly most of my problems are cosmetic and are due to age. I love a diesel car. I agree that Japanese makes very reliable vehicles too. Maybe I've just been fortunate.

in Holland (europe) diesel is cheaper then petrol
rickrossthebosz 10 months ago
Just a small fact:
Diesel is a wasteproduct when producing petrol.
US needs a lot more gas than they can produce.
Europe doesnt need petrol they need diesel.

@janssen70 It's not like you've said.
Near by 42% of new cars in European Union has diesel engines.
In EU petrol and diesel fuels are regular fuel.
Price of diesel and petrol is very similar. In UK diesel fuel costs little bit more then petrol.
We also have alternative fuels like - LPG, CNG, alcohol, biodisel.
LPG cost 50% less then petrol.

great car, also a diesel, on the highway about 6-8 liters per 100km
great stearing, indeed a good soundsystem.
what i do'nt like is the fact that there is not that much power when putting the pedal to the metal.
