In my opinion, the main difference is that the vast majority of artist from the 1980's were original live acts that were signed by record companies rather than slick and over produced recording company "product". Sure they had attitude, but it was genuine from years of playing bars and small clubs where you had to win the crowd over.

In case you haven't discovered them, also try: Heart, Joan Jett, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Starship, Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Styx, REO Speedwagon, AC-DC. That's a start anyway :-) .
