I read that since they are on a huge tour, he saves his voice. A lot of their songs are difficult to sing and on the throat. See Chester Bennington or the lead singer of Disturbed (can't recall his name).

So, basically, it's to save his voice. In studio, it's obviously a different story and he does use the power of his voice. Some of the acoustic performances I've seen that don't really have a large crowd, he does it all himself.
