@lamborghininextdoor Their partner fusion garage bailed out 3 days before launch day ceasing all of the produced units from TechCrunch, then they resold the units as the JooJoo (and got sued).
ok this looks better than the joojoo. but i guess fusion garage had to change it a little bit to avoid major issues. in terms of ipad v. joojoo, joojoo wins hands down
For people who want a small (8.9") tablet that can run Windows 7, Skype with 3G, Photoshop with multi-touch, HD media playback, video editing, and a whole lot more... it debuted at CES 2010. I found it here: NetbookNavigator (dot) com
This is a prototype, and it seems pretty solid as far as prototypes go. Scrolling happens in a different area of the screen from the gestures (that's how it looks in the video anyway).
I'd buy this if it came out under the TechCrunch branding and the pricing was reasonable. If it came out under the "Joo Joo" branding, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole because of the potential legal issues over theft of TC's IP.
I am definitely buying the Joojoo, specifically because they will be sued and discontinue their product, and I like to have the very cool products that aren't mainstream (the Tapwave Zodiac for example)
this seems like a cool device...if it did indeed hit shelves but i dont think i would have bought one right away...seems buggy still, but hey nice job otherwise :D
@chembro84 He didn't kill the project, it's the shareholders of his company Fusion Garage, those are the people who have the final say in any company.
I think it's safe to say that we're looking at an early beta software, so I wouldn't dismiss it just yet. Unfortunately the video shows a user interface that is indeed less then stellar, and I'm sorry to say, but I wouldn't pay for the presented user experience, especially poor is the responsiveness closely followed by the lack of smoothness of switching between various interface stages, lack of animations, not a 2009/2010 quality. Finally what's up with that youtube video "playing" on the pad
Cool prototype. It would be nice if you had a full keyboard and if you had a working stylus for taking notes. Also, the home screen looks a bit bland. You obviously have a great creative team with the way the hardware looks. But maybe try working on a better looking interface.
I'm a bit confused, its a web browser, you can visit any page you want on it. The front page has twitter, facebook, picasa and stuff on it (just to name a few off the top of my head). and I'm pretty sure you can type URL's into it.
it is posible to install in this device as x86 (or more simple "Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz + 1GB of ram")
but we don't konw about disk space it have (yet) so windows xp and any linux for netbook include ubuntu netbook, moblin, chrome os posible (base on disk space it have)
ps. (as my prediction) this os fell like splashtop on usb. i don't think windows 7 is posible.
Onboard processor has a clock speed of 1 to 1.8 ghz. It's pretty new so running an 8 year old OS shouldn't be much of a big deal if there's enough disk space (4gigs is plenty for a barebones install). Btw, Xp minimum requirements was like 400 mhz with 64 mb of ram or something.
The idea of a mobile web browser is great, however with the development of internet/3G capable phones your marketability is hard pressed. And i would recommend perhaps adding some removable memory or USB port. Trust me your market is in PORTABILITY, ACCESSIBILITY, COMPATIBILITY.
If you can cover at least these then you have a larger market of people. and really by adding these extras your not increasing your production cost by much.
I know there's a newer model but with just seeing the video I wanna but one!
It'll be nice if it can read SD cards, but especially if it's going to be sold in latinamerica (because if we say international, it tends to be just Europe, Canada...)
Can the CrunchPad connect to and take control of a PC? What I want is to be able to control my PC remotely and see what is on the screen, in as close to real time as possible.
It needs a little extra ram, for graphics and normally. The viddeo didn't play exactly well. A SD card reader, and it should be able to connect your wifi. Also, make the keyboard not so intrusive, or include an option to make it less intrusive.
Looks good. With some kinda comic book reader and a drawing/painting program this would be an instant buy for me (please tell me it does have built in SD reader, right? Otherwise the 4 gig internal storage will kill it for me)
From memory there is no linux support for Atom hardware acceleration of video, so video is liable to be less than watchable. Kudos all the same, though, it fills a niche.
Look at the tabs on the top in the beginning!! I see Applications, Games, Music, and Videos! Will you be able to access those tabs with that content on the release version?
Surely other factors will be limiting, I don't have the specs at hand but I can't imagine this thing will have excessive amounts of RAM. I don't know how to ModBook does it's text input, but this would have to follow the same procedure.
It'll basically be a netbook on the harware side. Intel Atom platform with 1 GB RAM. The only big difference is the storage which is 4 GB of flash memory. But then again you won't need more since it's just for the OS, Browser and Cache.
It looks like it has potential but what sort of customisation is going to be available such as on the UI and app front? The home screen looked very bland and while I know it's functional but if you really want to appeal to those wanting an Apple-style product you'd need to improve it a lot from row after row of icons with zero text.
I have two small gripes after seeing this, one is the use of a phone to record this but the other is that it seemed sluggish, unresponsive even. Bugs to iron out?
This has a lovely design, but after using a eee linux netbook with only 4 gigs storage (i.e., essentially none, after first startup browser & OS updates), I would be very, very concerned to have to use this for anything other than fun if it doesn't have any storage to speak of. In actual practice, you really do need *some* storage for browser caching, browser updates, OS updates, saving graphics briefly before uploading them to here and there, email attachments, pdfs, and so forth...
I think this could have some real potential, especially in light of the move toward web-centric computing. I will say, though, that in order for this device to hit a home run in that arena, it needs to comfortably support everything you'd need to do in that kind of environment.
I am looking forward to this device. On an unrelated note I wish tech crunch would get someone to do their video for them. In my honest opinion anything worth doing is worth doing right, and for a site like tech crunch hiring someone to produce proper videos is cheap
My earlier comment didn't get posted... If the video playback issue were truly just a synch issue with the video camera, then why does he keep pressing the play/pause button halfway into the video. It looks like he's trying to hide the fact that the video doesn't play smooth. (And as others already pointed out, it's not a network issue -- the video is already buffered.)
1. Where do the icons for the home page come from? If they're fav icons, then they're going to look like garbage at that size. And what about all the pages you want to bookmark that don't have an associated icon? Do you end up with dozens of icons that all look the same? That's going to be fun.
2. If that's the best they can get the gestures to respond on a pre-recorded demo video, then it looks like it's going to be a frustrating device to use.
if the new prototype comes out like they say it will, I think it will be a lot more impressive than in this video. Can't wait for the press event in July
This thing looks like nothing more than an underpowered netbook (and that's saying something) except without the keyboard and cursor track. That touch keyboard looks clumsy and ineffectual for real typing. Therefore, due to its size, it is even less versatile a computing platform than many smart phones or an iPod touch. It doesn't even look like it can run a flash video at an even 20 frames...much less 19. Better stick with a real netbook or ultra-thin notebook for your portable solution.
I love it and I'm definitely going to buy it, but it does seem to have some issues with flash player. Someone said that it was related to framerate issues with the camera. I don't think so, because you can see the crunch pad lag when he wants to pause or leave full screen.
Windows 7 on this thing might be a good idea, but it won't come with much storage, so I doubt you could even fit it on there.
Anyway, it's a good way to spend 300 dollars. PLEASE SHIP TO CANADA!!!
No. It's because the CPU has trouble processing the video. Flash Player is extremely taxing, especially when it's used to playback FLV or MP4 files, like on Youtube. Look at the video again and you will see that the video was buffered well ahead of what he was playing.
The explanation for this is that the hardware designers did not consider it important for the device to have a touchscreen interface, even though it does have a touchscreen. It's a touchscreen device with a mouse interface.
video is running at 0.5 fps because the adobe flash player is very very sloppy on linux; and I presume this pad is just using a heavily optimized version of linux.
what about copy and paste? retrieving data to complete forms etc? a notepad or file system manager? Is it just a browser with touch screen? Seems a bit limited to me. I'll stick to a tablet or a full functioning laptop thanks. I think I would find it's simplified OS limiting. Sure the size and thickness are attractive but at what cost. It's like an ebook reader for websites.
Yeah, and...? God knows how much was wasted on this to date - Apple is going to drink his milkshake soon. Somebody take a photo at the exact moment Arrington hears of the Apple tablet's release! ;o
That's sort of what happens when you try to record video off a computer screen using a camcorder - the frame rates can't hope to match up, so it ends up looking like stuttering video.
I'm sure in person it would be as smooth as any other device displaying a YouTube video.
I've made this comment higher up the thread, but in case you miss it:

certainly i am familiar with the "video recording video" issue. if that is what is giving the appearance of 1fps video, then fantastic, that is the best case scenario. i didn't think it was so obvious that that is the /only/ possibility here. regardless, i can't wait for this to come out! =)

I think that. Since it's an Intel Atom. You can install new operation system like linux, widows xp or 7 base on disk space and ram.

After os is installed. you will need to install a on screen keyboard program and set it to run everytime you turn it on.

Here is something I don't understand. You have a very large touch screen, but when you display the keyboard, it is small as f*ck. Any explanation?
I thought the point of this kind of device was to be able to write easier than it would be on a Iphone...
kirualex 2 years ago 5
To have as much screen size as possible I guess
I think you would be able to enlarge it anyway
spconway11 2 years ago
The explanation for this is that the hardware designers did not consider it important for the device to have a touchscreen interface, even though it does have a touchscreen. It's a touchscreen device with a mouse interface.
vwtch 2 years ago
I think ...
Because they have "vertical mode" as seen in every set of this device's design render.
they using same keyboard in horizontal mode. it's easyer to familiarize.
Note that it have capacitive touchscreen display. Not a resistive touchscreen display.
so it's as accuracy as iphone HTC G1, Palm Pre or Zune HD but in 12" size.
put4558350 2 years ago
reason is it's have 12" touch screen work in two mode vertical and horizontal
note that it's 12" is more than 7 times bigger than 3.5" iphone. and it's using capacitive touchscreen same to iphone and htc g1
to fit keyboard in vertical it's size is reduce
using same keyboard in horizontal to make it easier to familiar

video is running at 0.5 fps because the adobe flash player is very very sloppy on linux; and I presume this pad is just using a heavily optimized version of linux.

what about copy and paste? retrieving data to complete forms etc? a notepad or file system manager? Is it just a browser with touch screen? Seems a bit limited to me. I'll stick to a tablet or a full functioning laptop thanks. I think I would find it's simplified OS limiting. Sure the size and thickness are attractive but at what cost. It's like an ebook reader for websites.

If you read the CrunchPad articles about this, that's exactly what they're going for.

Hmmm, no the first commenter was right, the video playback is horrible. And I don't think it's anything to do with "frame rates matching up." :)

This looks great, until Apple reveals their product in 2010 - Mike Arrington will realize he shouldn't have wasted his money.

But this will be out in July 2009

Yeah, and...? God knows how much was wasted on this to date - Apple is going to drink his milkshake soon. Somebody take a photo at the exact moment Arrington hears of the Apple tablet's release! ;o

Even if apple do make tablet. It's not likely that apple will using atom.
Especially for $300 target price.

Exactly. If apple does release a similar device, you can sure as hell bet it wont be anywhere near the 300$ pricetag.

Why are you being voted down? It is a serious question. From what I saw it did not seem to run into a buffering-issue, this was all playback-related.
Hopefully it is just this is caused by the prototype nature of the device.
All in all I'm super excited! :D
