awesome song- best ever from rem by mike- dang reminds me of how my grandmother made it clear not to throw anything of hers away, i cuttered their home, wish i could undo putting all her stuff in their home- its my fault
RIP REM !! great tune from one of the greatest albums of all time !! loved all there stuff but for me ! out of time ! was the best !! they will go down in history as one of the greats no doubt !! gonna miss them !!
R.E.M were coming back from Heaven after giving God his monthly perfromance review when they were confronted by a beast resembling Barbara Streisand. They dispatched the creature with a slice of cake and a toothbrush. They then rendezvoused with Edward Khil, Gilgamesh, Aragon, Chuck Testa, Gaston and Jimmy Page and proceeded to decimate an army of emo vampires while piloting an X - Wing saving dozens of Kenyan orphans. The band eventually returned home and wrote this song.
@discokidx1. This was also my favourite off Out of Time - so utterly mike mills, a lovely melody, layers of cascading music, edginess and harmony intertwined and the weirdest set of words. Perfect....
What happened to good bands like REM and The Police?? The 70s, 80s, and 90s had such good music! The Rolling Stones, Southern Culture On The Skids, The B52s, they were all such good bands!! We're going to torture our kids with music from Justin Bieber, and Selena Gomez. We've taken these frickin disney stars and made them idols. NOW IS THAT RIGHT?!
True about the 70s and 90s but I have to disagree about the 80s the 2000s have been better than the 80s. There just hasn't been much good mainstream music but there is an overwhelming amount of great indie music.
@MrMusicboy5000 there were more pioneering bands in the 80's though, so the tendency is to side with that decade when it comes to indie music. e.g Swans, Big Black, R.E.M, Pixies, Cocteau Twins, Smiths, Dead Can Dance etc etc.
@MrMusicboy5000 You wouldn't have half the great indie music of today if it wasn't for 80's artists such as R.E.M., The Smiths, Pixies, Joy Division/New Order, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, The Cult, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Church, Go-Betweens, Stones Roses, The Jesus and Mary Chain etc.
Yea well just wait till you see what all this indie music leads too in twenty years it's the same thing. Anyway there will never be a decade as good as the seventies were for music.
Mike Mills sings on this one. If you research Mike Mills a bit, you might start wondering whether he's the true musical genius behind REM. Both his parents have musical backgrounds. I think back to 15 years ago when i was watching "Unplugged" on MTV. REM was playing and Mike Mills was singing this. A music major in my fraternity walked in and told us how Mills was the best singer in REM. Now I get it.
@toespam71 It's difficult to say with R.E.M. Mike Mills might give them that Beach Boys / Byrds flavour perhaps but, on the other hand, maybe it's someone else in the band who likes them and he just fulfils that part vocally the best. Peter Buck is regarded as the hard rocker and I certainly wouldn't be without that in R.E.M..'s output. But what about Bill Berry? He wrote Everybody Hurts, Man on the moon and Tongue. And Suspicion, after he left, sounds like a follow up to Tongue.
they have so many wonderful songs that some get lost in the shuffle. this is one of their deep cuts that no one ever references or thinks about, yet its better than 99% of songs that ever get released. they are true musical geniuses.
@legham777 me too and i am old and a musician as well this song is classic. i had the rare opportunity to meet Mike Mills and Michael Stipe in a roadside diner and they were good people. it was shortly after the D. Boon incident and were pretty bummed out. I think that was the green tour. still a fav in my collection!
Great song, damn, my brother used to have this on tape, really was a great album overall, easily one of R.E.M.'s best to date. This song was definitely a highlight.
This song, like no other REM song except maybe Low or Near Wild Heaven, is like a time warp to 1992 college radio for me. i miss hearing the harmonies and atmospheric sound from that era.
