sure is. i bought one last year and took it fishing and was towing our boat through some stuff that the trucks had trouble with. short wheelbase can go over alot of shit. they are great in sand and snow from my experience. haven't gone mudding yet
Depends on where you live. I live in the midwest(Michigan) and we get ALOT of snow here and I have NEVER gotten stuck in my 2003 Ford Escape 4x4. but if you live somewhere hot and just want one for wheeling that isn't the trucklet for you.
Don't get a new one if you plan on doing that we have service B roads around here in iowa and i went on on this weekend and was doing great until the stupid roll over control kicked in and killed all the power to the transmission while i was going up hill, completetly getting me stuck. Love it other than that stupid ass feature you can't turn off. Thanks ford for promoting a 4WD vehicle that cant even make it down a muddy road. I just can't wait to see what happens on ice
unfortunatly the dealer, whom should be very knowledgeable on the matter said that it could not be turned off... there is no mention of roll over control to be turned of in the manual.. that is traction control you are referring to. i even asked the dealer to install a button to turn it off and he said it as not possible.. the dealer told me to purchase a vehicle with a four wheel drive switch...lol..
page 190 in the manual talks about turning off the traction control by momentary pressing the RSC button at the bottom of the center stack.
Page 192 of the manual talks about turning off the rest of system by holding the rsc button for more than five seconds. And all features will be reinstated if you go over 25mph.
in my manual it is actually page 188-189 however what you said above remains true to what was said in the manual. However, that being said the experience of being stuck in the middle of nowhere and subsequently overheating my transmission has jaded me from ever attempting to go on any mud road in this vehicle. Thank you for informing me of this, it will come in handy if i run into snow...lol. but for now mud roads will have to be taken with my F350.
An SUV wouldn't be my choice for off roading. My mother owns a Ford Escape though, front wheel drive. Those things are pretty slick though, and very fun to drive.

You can turn all that off.
But it happens in two stages.
And you have to press the button more than once.
Read the manual.

I don't blame you one bit.
I have a 4cyl 4wd xls.
And would never take it through a mud bog.
Every thing about the drive train and body is light weight. Not made for bashing through large rocks or deep mud.
But this is why I get 30mpg hwy 24mpg city.

Ford got sued by a lot of people that thought that an suv could take a corner at the same speed as a mustang. So now they are playing CYA.
