Message to Kyufus - it's certainly true that the founding fathers referenced a deity in their deliberations. However, in the 18th century, there was virtually no such thing as an atheist, some of them were deists, some pantheists(notably Thomas Jefferson). This point is barely relevant as there one common denominator among them was secularism. The USA was founded on the principle of a separation of church and state and that should never change.
Separation of church and state were put there so that the government wouldn't be swayed by religion. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. The ten commandments are all morally good things to live by and they were removed from places due to religion but our country did fine for years with them there. We swear on the Bible to take an oath of truth, God is referenced in the pledge of allegience, "One Nation Under God" and is on our national currency, these things are our foundation as a country.
Most of the 10 commandments are good moral standards to live by. But "you shall have no other god before me", "keep the sabbath holy" and "i am the lord your god" are completely irrelevant to morality and are the only ones exclusive to religion. Just goes to show that nobody really needs an old book to tell them how to be good. I'm not suggesting there should not be religion, merely that it should be private. Living by the ten commandments is fine, that doesn't mean they're necessary.

As for the 10 Commandments, they existed long before "Moses bright them down from the mountain." They were part of the Hammurabi Code in ancient Babylon which is probably where the Hebrews first heard them. The code was very effective and entirely secular.

However, in the 18th century, there was virtually no such thing as an atheist, some of them were deists, some pantheists(notably Thomas Jefferson). This point is barely relevant as there one common denominator among them was secularism. The USA was founded on the principle of a separation of church and state and that should never change.

Separation of church and state were put there so that the government wouldn't be swayed by religion. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. The ten commandments are all morally good things to live by and they were removed from places due to religion but our country did fine for years with them there. We swear on the Bible to take an oath of truth, God is referenced in the pledge of allegience, "One Nation Under God" and is on our national currency, these things are our foundation as a country.

Most of the 10 commandments are good moral standards to live by. But "you shall have no other god before me", "keep the sabbath holy" and "i am the lord your god" are completely irrelevant to morality and are the only ones exclusive to religion. Just goes to show that nobody really needs an old book to tell them how to be good. I'm not suggesting there should not be religion, merely that it should be private. Living by the ten commandments is fine, that doesn't mean they're necessary.

As for the 10 Commandments, they existed long before "Moses bright them down from the mountain." They were part of the Hammurabi Code in ancient Babylon which is probably where the Hebrews first heard them. The code was very effective and entirely secular.

I would hope that we would learn from mistakes made in history. Didn't we learn from the Crusades, Inquisition, Holocaust? I believe that we would be more accurate to say that they theorized that the Earth was flat. If people use to "know this as fact", then we would have many well documented accounts of witnesses telling us about men & women tumbling off the edge of the Earth. I do know that there are many well documented accounts of the life of Jesus and the many miracles provided through God, unlike the lack of witnesses about the end of the Earth.

Human progress and technological advances tend to debunk many beliefs and myths.

So when our founding fathers spoke about God, they were going back on those auspices of keeping church and state seperate? The words "seperation of church and state" appear nowhere in the Constitution. The establishment clause refers specifically to the establishment of a state church, as had existed in England. It has nothing to do with office holders speaking about their faith.

Sarah Palin did not say that it was "God's will", despite the bogus characterization of Charlie Gibson. Perhaps if he had bothered to listen to the quote himself, rather than rely on the increasingly biased Associated Press, he would have learned that she expressed a hope that we were following God's will, i.e. Lincoln's statement that what is important is that we are on God's side.
