I don't play the violin, just viola. But I have played piano for over 50 years. Viola only 8! I found that if you play viola, everyone needs you and you can get to play in things that a beginning violinist wouldn't be allowed to. Violas are that much rarer! Furthermore, in the hands of a beginner like me, they are easier to listen to. Go for it!
you should play viola first. its easier to start out with because viola doesnt really get hard parts like violin. but its also fun! in my opinion viola is better.!
I play viola and violin, I started out on viola. Violas sound much better (warmer, richer sound) and can still play fast sections as easy as a violin. Violas rarely have spotlight melodies in orchestras, but I prefer viola over violin
I'm glad that you could see through our clumsy performance to hear a cute little piece!
It's from François DeVienne "Six Duets" , Medici Press.EZ to get from Shar, Johnson's, or sheetmusicplus. Also, same pub., Hartmann 9Duets. Medici always has very thoughtless, poor layouts, page turns when not necessary; you'll want to rexerox, as I did. OTHERWISE... Have fun!!!
whenever people ask me what instrument i play i say the viola and they look at me like i am crazy some people ask me what a viola is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! shame om those people
Yeah! I too play viola. I have been playing since I was 10. I'm now 17:) I love it! I love its deep, rich sound. I believe violins are sooo overrated. lol.
i agree as well after playing viola and violin for years, but violas have better tones, and not as screechy notes... i like playing both, but viola's gonna be my major once i get to college lol
I play viola and i have to say that we are kind of neglected whenever it comes to orchestra sometimes. i don't expect to ever get the melony but it sometimes seems as though we dissolve in the music. i love playing the viola. i've only played for almost 5 years.
Great! You GOT it! I've played viola for 7 years now, but I began at age 56... a little late, but it's SUCH fun. I've played piano for 55 years, so I didn't have to learn Everything right from the start. Google summerkeys. Perfect for beginner adults. I hope you have a cellist, violist or violinist to play duets with, too! I'm lucky.
um im going to join orchestra next year for my elective and im 11. is viola better than cello? because i like them both but i chose cello already and i really want viola too. pls help!
i dont know i am learning how to play both i play viola now, i luv it but you dont get any good melodies, i like viola though and im 10 so im in yur positiongood luc!!!hop ethis helps
Sorry this is a little late, but yeah. Viola is the best! We're cool, we're the conductor's preciouses, and we have our very own clef!!! WOOO! It is never too late to switch in. :]
CHOOSE VIOLA!!! In orchestra pieces, the viola part is really boring (and really easy) but like everyone said, violas are the conductor's bestest friend. We're awsome!!! I play cello and viola, but only to help me with the viola. So you might want to do both anyway because it really helps.
Hey, I started viola when I was 10 and still play once in a while now when I'm 34. I agree with others that violas provide just harmonies, not melodies when playing in orchestras and quartets etc. I still love the sound of the viola though by itself or in small groups - it's sombre and "edgey"/"alternative". Also a plus is that because we're so rare orchestras and quartets allow us to play at higher levels sooner - I was playing along with full university symphony orchestras after 5 years!
This is happening all across America and the World! People are daring to make music freely, and there's just nothing they can do to dampen our spirit! It's revolutionary! It comes from within. Hearts are glad! Rejoice! :)

Great spirit. Love it. And I've wondered whether starting playing violna being about 20 isn't actually "too late". Shame on me. ;-)

Viola is soo much better. And more rare - the conductors LOVE violists! We also have our own clef. Viola RULES!
