The reason why people should worship is so that their own soul will turn towards God from the worldly desires so that it can attain salvation if it fully immerses in God. Nothing else. The reason why there so many forms of God is he is playing various roles (just like one man can be father, a son, an employee) etc. The reason why God is not readily visible with shape is the person looking for him is not qualified yet just like a Prime minister will not meet without appointment.

Very naive thoughts on God. The reason people have temples and idols is because they need some place to remember him (just a big company has branch). Nobody should pray God for anything in result. That is the mistake of devotees not that of God. Krishna had saved 16000 girls but only married them since when he saved from the demon they said the society will not accept them. He had told them he would have no relation other than giving them a designation as his wives.
