My cat did the same thing over this summer when we were growing cucumbers outside. The cucumbers were only babies but like RLP I had fun moving the cucumbers around just to tease the cat. hehe!

They take no chances and they are very different from dogs, in the sense that they don't rush madly towards strange objects or creatures and start barking at them as dogs do. This way, cats are less likely to get hurt by strange things they don't recognize.
my cat was the same way with laundry baskets...it was sorta fun to nudge the other side (that he couldn't see) with my foot cuz he'd jump...sadly it worked multiple times in 20 minutes....
