I've cried from inside while watching this scene. Matteo's sudden appearance... It caught me by surprise, same method was used in Braveheart and that one was only shattered my heart but in the Best of Youth this scene made me both very sad and warmed my heart. Poor Matteo...
Sometimes i'm watching this wonderful scene repeatedly and listening this masterpiece music with it. I advise this movie to everyone but be careful its very long (total 6 hours)
This movie was absolutely heart wrenching...I am a college student and watched this as a part of my Italian course, and this scene made me cry like I never have before...the film is just seeping with messages, emotions, and the actors are brilliant! Bravo!
100% agreement with nomorephones. This is the best scene in the history of cinema, especially coupled with the coda in Norway at the very end of the film.
I was dragged to this picture about four years ago - two three hour sessions! I think this is maybe the best scene in a movie I have ever seen. I weep every time I see it! I have told so many people about this film, and each has told me they love it. I have to be careful, though, as I could watch it too often, and then I fear the magic would be gone.

I cried so hard at this scene and the epilogue in Norway. Such an amazing movie, its a shame that it hasn't had the exposure that it deserves.

This truly haunting theme is from Truffaut's Jules et Jim soundtrack. Composer is Georges Delerue.
