Why does he say 'Aum namaha Shivai', and then 'Aum namah Shivaya'? These are both different, and both have six syllables, not five. I don't understand it.
There are rules of euphony in Sanskrit, called "sandhi" dealing with combination of syllables. He says first "oM *pause* namaH(a) śivAya" then "oM *very short pause* namaśśivAya". Both are right. There are six syllables : oM + five syllables. aH is an overlong vowel, it counts for 3, like oM. Short voyels counts for one and long vowels for two.
Your gifts to all of us remain beyond common expressions of gratitude. Yet light of that, I thank you for your dedicated, detailed, accessible, thorough, and thoughtful work - both here and on your website.

This is a more traditional pronunciation of the mantra, unlike the many modern "singing" versions.

I thought the "v" was supposed be pronounced like a "W". Is it ShiVaya or ShiWaya?

Why exactly 108? Curious.

It is not about Buddhism. Besides, consider from where Buddhism "borrowed" the use of 108 japa or counting beads.
