i think the american car business should have just ended right there in 1995 and let the japanese and other manufacturer's do the work.
seriously why on earth get a grand caravan when you can get a sienna for a little more and pay less in repairs and have a safer, better, and comfortable ride?
or any other comparable car ie the toyota corrola vs. the chevy malibu.
No HPFP failure, more MPG, and I believe cleaner exhaust with some kinda filter or cleaner installed in the muffler (or is that Mercedes Bluetech?) with a great amount of power/torque (esp) 425ft/lb! (+125~ 90 ft-lb more than the gasoline version).
Not to mention TAX CREDITS ARE YOU KIDDING ME, 335d is a no brainer vs the 335i.
For the people who say its loud and sounds like a tractor. You've clearly never heard it in person. It sounds like a tractor only when it in neutral, because it only works at 600-700 rpm. Any petrol engine would sound like that as well at 600 rpm, but instead, petrols work at about 1000-1100 rpm while in neutral. And this diesel sounds better than petrol when accelerating.
@derbigpr500 So is that the reason they have that distinct sound? I have a 06 nissan altima (gas) which always sounded similar to a diesel engine. Can I then assume that my altimas engine runs at lower rpms than the typical gas engine? If so is that the only reason they have that sound? Are there other factors? I ask because I am curious about gas engines all sounding slightly different but yet most diesels sound very similar. My experience is limited I live in Hawaii and there are few diesels.
@micahaaaa Also what makes new diesel quiet is the injection system. Called common rail. Uses high pressure fuel injectors that deliver precise amounts of fuel. These pressures can exceed 27,000 PSI. The big thing that changes sound is how many times the fuel injector fires per power stroke. The bosch fuel injection system which the bmw's have injects fuel about 5-6 times. and the first injection gets the explosion going then the injector keeps feeding the flame.
@buyjunk yeah but the new ones sound like that becasue they are direct injected and can have higher compression it sounds like the vw 2.0 tdi for sure
I can fall asleep to that engine sound. Love this car - I got to have it.

@derbigpr500 ; Although idle for petrols may be higher, usually it's still below 1000 revs.

While muffled, and smooth, and pleasing to the ear, you can still hear the diesel growl under it.. not that its a bad thing.
rudolphna54 3 years ago 2
exactly, I read that vw.s 2.0 tdi 170 hp diesel sounds closest to petrol and revs a lot for diesel engine but bmw's sounds just like diesel
