My all-time favorite also...went quietly about his job and did it spectacularly. If it hadn't been for the disease that took his life he would have been a lock for 3,000+ hits (Jeter wouldn't have caught him), more than 600 HRs, and more than 2100-2200 RBIs. A class act all the way, and a ripping RBI machine. What amazes me about Gehrig is that he drove in SO MANY RUNS---and consider that Ruth batted in front of him, and with Ruth hitting so many HRs Gehrig's RBI opportunities were REDUCED a lot
Quiz time!Who is the first athlete to have his number(4) retired and also the first to appear on the front of a box of Wheaties(1934)?You only get one guess!
Lou was "The Iron Man"..Coop was born to play him. I have so many thoughts I'd like to share. My dad met Ruth twice. My mother worked with Gehrigs's sister, and one of my best friends is frends with Cooper's daughter, and her concert pianist husband.
@satan865 For you to call Gehrig a bum negates any other point you try to raise. Once you associate the words "Gehrig" and "bum" you become irrelevant. Gehrig is one of the greatest to ever play. Give him his due and respect before you impose your own agenda into the conversation. Good day, sir.
@ssteele1 all of those white boy records shouldn't even count because it wasn't even a fair game...if their were blacks in the league, they would of smashed those records
@satan865 - If black players of those times would have been in the majors, the records of Ruth and Gehrig might have been even better. Every pitcher wasn't Satchel Paige. Every hitter wasn't Josh Gibson. Many players merely filled out rosters - but wouldn't have been major league quality players. Even Negro League players who barnstormed with Ruth and saw him hit huge home runs off their pitchers acknowledged Ruth's greatness.
@satan865 - Besides Satchel Paige, could you name about ten black pitchers who would have done this had they played in the major leagues at that time?
@WSenator1 smokey joe williams,bill foster,ray brown,bullet rogan, jose mendez,hilton smith,john donaldsin,willie foster,dave brown,cannonball jackson dick redding,nip winters, leon day, dizzie dismukes
@satan865 - Part 2: It's still only ten pitchers, and the rest of them would have been handled by the best white hitters - just like the best black hitters did. As I said before, even the great black pitchers of the time who faced Ruth said he was legit, the real deal. You just have no proof that the best white major leaguers would have been downgraded from the big leagues by even the greats you have mentioned.
@WSenator1 Babe Ruth did playe some exhibition games against black players. He was very much respected and liked by both the players and the fans. The feeling was apparently mutual. For the record(literally)Ruth batted 55 times and connected for 25 hits for a .455 average.Incredibly,of those 25 hits,12 were for homers! The late, great Buck O`Neil claimed that the Babe blasted a 500 ft drive off of Satchel Paige in a 1938 exhibition game(3 yrs.after Ruth had retired). Yes,Ruth was very, very legit!
Lou, like Babe Ruth, threw left and batted left. But look at 2:58. He's signing an autograph righty. 100+ years ago kids were made to conform to a right-handed world, at least in the schoolroom. Babe, too, if you search his photos.
Lou is one of my earliest heroes. What class and grace. And those dimples! He was a doll - a big, tough, hard-working doll. I too would have preferred music more appropriate for the period, but the fact that a song like this was chosen just speaks to the fact that people are still connecting with Lou and his time - and that's cool.
Died at 38,23 month later after the emotional farwell speech,he had a terminal disease " amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ".These day it's known as Lou Gehrig disease. He stepped away from the plate for the very last time on july 4,1939 in the new york yankee stadium, claiming he's the luckiest man on the face of the earth,he died brave.
Imagine if he had kept playing? His record would have never been broken, but God had to call him home, the iron horse rode home, where he sits watching every yankee game and cheering them on! Go YANKEES!
note the first baseman's mitt, half the size of the ones in use now. btw, you could go to sleep and be sure the same players would be there the next day. not a sport, these days
Great job!!!! loved the music and the pictures of the Iron Horse who truly was SUPERMAN!!!! Just off of the top of my head, Gehrig batted .340 with 493 hrs 1995 rbis 2721 hits 535 doubles and a ton of runs scored triple crown in 1934 2130 consectcutive games played in and the list goes on........
Note carefully that he played when protective batting helmets were not in regular use, if at all.
Also, as far as a respectable looking baseball uniform, Gehrig was A- number 1 in comparison to some players today who have their uniform pants almost dragging on the ground. Alan Leake
it doesnt fucking matter what his uniform looked like it doesnt matter if he had to wear a helmet or not what matters is that he was an amazing player and his career ended short because of a disease now u can kindly go fuck yourself
I really like this video. Seven of my family members have passed away from ALS. This is a wonderful tribute to but one of the many brave people who have suffered with this disease. Thanks.
I really liked the music! I think it goes really well with the images while knowing how Lou Gehrig had to show "Superhuman" strength while fighting ALS. Anyone that watches a loved one have to go through ALS would agree! Thanks for the video!
Please view it again. See how the music coordinates so well with the movement of the excellent photograpy. It portrays the toughness and "Superman" aspects of Lou rather than others' emphasis always on the disease that took his life. I think the non-period music makes vibrant Gehrig's physical strength and his powerful, less seen "dark side" (as opposed to his famous smiles) that drove him toward excellence. It's a haunting video
@onepoliceplaza Dude, strippers pole dance to this song. Enough said. I'm not knocking your love and respect for the Iron Horse, just saying this song is the pits.
@guitymon Since I hadn't heard the song before or whatever stripper video it accompanies, I guess I have a different take on it. If you wipe away your past knowledge of the song, perhaps you can see how it fits. I'm not a dude (I'm a woman but not a stripper!), but maybe I'm too old or don't listen to the same music. In any event, I like this song for Gehrig as opposed to the sentimental music that usually goes with videos of Lou. (I do like the "Lou Gehrig-the Iron Horse video though)
Please don't ever erase this video. It is a fine tribute to Gehrig, and shows the toughness and grace of this beautiful man.

Want to know how great Lou Gehrig was? One year he hit .295, with 29 home runs and 114 RBI's. That year was 1938 - when HE WAS DYING!

Shoulda went for some vintage 30s and 40s stuff here.
