  • I searched for "Jessye Norman perky" and this is the first hit. Followed closely by Erlkonig.

  • My son was taken from me, I hope he never forgets me, my heart is broken,,

  • Quelle drôle d'idée, Didon en arbre de Noël... et qui chante plutôt bas, hélas...

On aime tant Jessye Norman, peut-être pouvait-on se passer de ce clip raté, avec orchestre presque variété ?

  • omg she looks like opera

  • There is a haunting beauty to this performance that I am in awe of.

  • Pour Les 4e De Maison Blanche qui regardent ça pour nos cours de Musique !!!!!

    Gros Bisouuuus de Raphaëlle ! :D Viive la 4e B !!! <3333

  • One of the most beautiful voices around today to compliment possibly the most beautiful aria ever written, so desperate, so tragic!

  • Although not the best I've heard, Jessye Norman's version is much, much better than Renee Fleming's. Thanks for sharing! :)

  • Ничего более совершенного я не слышала.

  • I've been to Innsbrucke last week, When i visited the swarovski crystal museum i saw this video, how wonderful sound effect in the crystal dom!

  • Excellent!

  • Stunning performance!

  • Linda!! Fenomenal !! BR

  • wonderful face, wonderful eyes, wonderful Voice

  • Indeed flawless!!!!!!!

  • I am floored. Beautiful. End of story.

  • The most lovely rendition I have heard from this Area. Thanks for sharing this.

  • The flood was here!

  • Flood was here.

  • "Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meine Liebe, in meinen Lied. Schöner gibt's nichts." (I live in my heaven, my love and my song. Nothing is more beautiful than this.) How marvelous that this spoken piece was added to this exquisite video performance.

  • @clkallay If you don't add the word "alone" in your translation, than the whole thing looses its meaning and the character becomes presumputuous. Also "In meiner Liebe", because the case is dative, where feminine words take an R in the end. The R is softly spoken, that's why you missed it, I guess.

  • @angelo1962 The original of the quotation is from a poem by Rûckert, set by Mahler, and which Ms. Norman sings often: 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen' Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied." I live alone in my heaven, in my loving, and in my song.' Certainly applies to Dido's lament by Purcell......

  • @clkallay Thanks so much for the translation. I have been wondering what that meant. Really appreciate it. And yes the words are very beautiful.

  • @clkallay Thanks so much for the translation. I have been wondering what that meant. Really appreciate it. And yes the words are very beautiful.

  • Excellent, fantastic, sublime I have been lucky enough to see Jessye Norman perform live, wonderful experience.

  • Que d'émotions ! Loin des "baroqueux" soit disant puristes. Ici, c'est de l'art liryque à l'état pur. N'est-ce pas ce que recherchait Purcell? Merci Madame.

  • "Remember me" breaks my heart clean into pieces

  • La voz de Jessye Norman -de soprano dramática-, hace de esta aria una de las mejores versiones.

  • "Like" is not a strong enough word for this performance - it is sublime!

  • Esta musica é brutal, adoro a interpretaçao dela, adoro tudo!

  • Thanks Pauline Elliot for introducing me to Purcell's Music...and Jessye Norman's exquisite voice.

  • The Greatest

  • I don't usually listen to opera. I listened to this for a music appreciation class. I was really impressed/awed with the emotion and singing in this performer's face and voice. I really wanted to see the next scene where she dies - I bet it was a beautiful death scene!

  • @christskat

Same with me, this song was sung so beautifully I could feel the emotion in my chest, gotta love music appreciation! <3

  • Only a true artist can leave you spell bound...and this she did...

  • AMAIZING !

  • I truly believe Jessye Norman has the most beautiful voice there ever was, and will be for a long, long time.

  • Magic.

  • When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in, in thy breast. When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in, in thy breast. Remember me, remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. Remember me, remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate.
  • she's as dignified as a turtle

  • Beyond words give thanks! The BEST EVER!

  • Meravigliosa interpretazione. Voce calda, avvolgente, carezzevole. Grande artista !

  • why blackpeople has that voices? there must be more clasical black singers!! she is Brava!!

  • Her mouth could fit tiny children. SHE IS AMAZING! As a vocal performer... WOW! As an artist... HOT DAMN DIGGITY DOG! I am a fan. Her voice pierces the ears with vibrant life and energy.

  • Formidables la voix et le video! C'est impressionnant à regarder en ce moment précis, quand les descendants des Carthaginois arrivent sur les côtes de l'Europe...

  • translation: 4:14 I live alone: in my heaven, in my love, in my song, this is the highest beauty ...

Unforgettable mood: reflective surrounding fits perfect with her crystal clear voice. Great art is the best way to immortality: "Remember me".

    TNX!

  • Beautiful... heart-wrenching...

  • Wow. I am dumbstruck. I am going to click on her Liebestod now....I might end up a pile of ashes after that one....

  • AMAZING!

  • look at tht hand signal. M

  • My God!! This is the epitome of what music should be. This performance was absolutely breathtaking!! Who would dislike this??

  • Sublime - but what's with the Gallifreyan costume? ;-)

  • Sublime - but what's with the Gallifreyan costume? ;-)

Remember me, but... ah! Forget my fate.'

  • Cuando escucho esto.. no puedo describirlo con palabras, es imposible... la música, la voz ... increíble..

  • Is this "Dido and Aeneus: Dido's Lament"?

  • @uhohwhoops yeperdoo :D

  • @uhohwhoops indeed it is

  • @uhohwhoops Yes and no, Dido's Lament would include the recitative 'Thy Hand Belinda' that comes before this aria, so this is part of Dido's lament

  • perfect :)

  • Perfect intensity

  • @raincloud8 Shame on your rediculous comment.

  • what a strong warm voice she has. really nice for such a piece of music.

    loved everything about this vid.

  • fantastic

  • Superb voice, thats what I call talent.

  • Sublime, simplement sublime!

  • that's me when I grow up!

  • Piesa a fost inregistrata in sala muzeului Swarovski Kristalewelten din Wattens. Pe langa vocea ei uimitoare a aparut si efectul de cupola, care se vede in spate. Absolut uimitor.

  • Simply wonderful.

  • She is incredible, no matter what! But too bad I think she's lip sinking for the sake of the dramatics of filming this aestherically beautiful video.

  • @ABOCHITO its a video ofcorse shes lip sinking!

  • Her voice is so powerful!!!! I love it. I've searched and searched for the perfect sound as this is my favorite piece. The rendition is ok I just wish it was just a tad bit faster. Her performance was absolutly flawless!

  • @cooldude5318 but this is harder because it is slower, so its even more amazing

  • ;~; This made me cry, it's so awesome ;~;

    It's beautiful!!

  • I insist, the best voice I've ever heard is from Jessie Norman... OMG!.. absolutely wonderful!

  • DAMN THIS IS AWESOME

  • The very best rendition. I love her. I also feel suspended

  • Somebody replaced the original clip with this "sweety" and "perfectioned" Jessye and it lost somewhat of its force of voice and I have the impression it has been slowed down as speed....I am looking for the older clip....Sorry, sorry

  • Explêndido!

  • this can change (remembre?) the life

  • I'm not an opera purist by any means, so with all respect to AJMD08, I find Ms. Norman's rendition of Dido's Lament one of the most breathtaking performances ever recorded.

  • Very powerful, I really enjoy her portrayal of Queen Dido. Perhaps a little more range of dynamics...not just forte. And a little too Verdi rather than Purcell... but beautiful voice. =)

  • Can't say I paticularly like the costume, but this is fantastic, just the right type of voice and just the right pace for this sublime scene. It does look like lip-sync, though. Even so, she is simply superb, comparable to Flagstad and Baker.

  • The costume and background are beyond exquisite :)

  • В Австрии на сваровски были дни Бразилии эта тетенька там пела... Очень понравилось.. Снял на видео и дома смотрел .. Очень.. :)

  • Absolutely fabulous! The last refrain was just magical.

  • So sorrowful.

  • this was written around 1650 a.d. how many mothers today could sing this sad lament? how many more at the end times?

  • the costume reflects the timelessness of the aria as well as the vision of the timelessness director.

  • What is up with the costume?

  • ¡¡¡MAGNÍFICO!!!

    ¡¡¡PERFECTO!!!

    Remember me...

  • Voz pura, poderosa e imponente que honra el prestigio de Purcell, no hay otra que la pudiera cantar mejor, una pieza que le calza a la perfección.

    Notable.

  • I just want to know how Dido got inside of that giant diamond. Don't remember that part in the Aeneid.

  • whats it with all these 'broomstik-in-the-ass' comments about style and content. She sings it not only beautifully but perfectly too.

  • I agree that the color of her voice is not quite appropriate for this style. Nonetheless it is really good. I expected much worse.

  • I hate opera snobs. I think this is why more people aren't into it. I guess it's better to let the genre die than to let someone put a new interpretation on old work.

  • Amazing!

  • after watching this a million time i just realized i believe that she is lipsinging to her own recording, DANG i love this song and how she sings it!!!! I get to sing this for my jury and it has helped me alot

  • Wow! This is HEAVY!......... Not to mention completely contrary to any Baroque period performance practice! Strauss and Wagner are really her thing!

  • @AJMD08 Even if this is heavy for Baroque, it's light for Norman. I think she does admirably!

So many times we hear this song from freshman mezzos or sopranos who haven't quite got the range for anything else. True, the song was written to be performed by school-age girls, but the subject matter is mature enough to invite a...well, mature voice. I love it!

  • @oihanen First off I would like to point out, that I have NO issues with Jessye Norman. She is one of the finest dramatic sopranos in the business! I simply have issues with her voice for this style/period of music, we must respect Purcell's vision for this aria! And as far as I'm concerned, this aria should NEVER be sung by school age girls, it is far, far to challenging! But, the dark quality of Norman's voice takes away from the clarity of the aria! This is Purcell NOT Puccini!!!!

  • @AJMD08 Dude. Chill. Lol. I'm typically against singers crossing fachs and genres, but for some reason I like this. I also liked her Michel Legrand album, even though that got panned a little.

Yeah, it's over-romanticized, but I think of it less as spitting in Purcell's face and more like a really good cover. The original will always be so, but the cover has something good to say, too.

  • @oihanen I'm pretty sure that's what I just said. haha!

  • @AJMD08 You're issue is with what you've read in a book about music. You're not listenening. when it comes to music there are no rules. that's what makes art different from philosophy and aesthetics.

  • @fizywig Although what you say is true! There is something to be said about performance practice from the period the music was composed in! I encourage you to read up on Baroque period perfor. practice! It's simply respecting what the composer intended! This is Purcell NOT Puccini! Its the same for voices like Emma Kirkby, she has a voice far to light for Verdi or Puccini! Therefore her singing an aria by Verdi would be bad form! and not to mention potentially damaging to her instrument!

  • @fizywig hmmm, good point. could be.

  • @AJMD08 I cannot help but to notice your comment. I value what you say about Purcell, but honestly I think Jesse brings a magnificent rendition to the audience. In consideration ask yourself what Callas did to the true lyric Coloratura's... she put them out of business by introducing the more melodramatic voice into those roles... In fact I think it is Jesse's true mature and emotional portrayal that pleases so much.

  • @SoulNotes1 At the risk of sounding like a broken record..haha This is just too stylistically heavy for music composed during the Baroque Period. Call it what you may, and I must voice again, that I have NO issue with Jessye Norman! But, it is my belief that the dark quality of her voice takes away from the clarity of this beautiful aria! I would have the same opinion about a lighter voice taking on a Wagnerian Aria... It's simply not what the aria is built for.....

  • @AJMD08 I hear what you are saying, but perhaps it would benefit you not to listen anymore since you feel so strongly about it. I say that with all respect...I have had the same feelings about other arias on youtube being sung by voices I felt were wrong for the aria, etc., so I simply moved on. I am sort of neutral on her performance and vocal color for this aria.

  • @htshoward Believe me, I haven't been listening...Maybe you are unaware that every time someone "Replies" on a comment you receive an email message. I'm simply defending my earlier comments!

  • @AJMD08 Okay...point taken. I feel the same way about other singers. I just reply and no longer listen. Be well.

  • @AJMD08 Are you for real? This area is about a woman who is committing suicide because she can not be with the one she loves. I don't only think it is appropriate for it to be heavy, I think it brings the life to the piece that Purcell originally envisioned. The baroque period is known for a lot of elaborate and showy pieces, but elaborate and showy is not synonymous with happy and light.

  • @42jemini First, I encourage you to read up on Baroque Period Performance Practice. While you are right, "The baroque period is known for a lot of elaborate and showy pieces" this is not showcased so much in slow, legato arias. But, in fast coloratura, and Fioritura work. Second, Just because a voice is "light" DOES NOT mean it's only capable of singing "happy" or "light" arias. (This is a common misconception) This is simply about respect for what the composer intended!!

  • @SoulNotes And I wouldn't go so far as to say any true lyric coloraturas have been "put out if business" by anyone! Natalie Dessay, Beverly Sill, Mado Robin, Lily Pons are some of the most famous lyric coloraturas from past to current times. They certainly didn't/ haven't experienced any lack of work..Even after Maria Callas! Who basically destroyed her by singing roles that where out of her fach. Making everything heavy, or "melodramatic", doesn't make it opera! Style MUST be a prominent factor!

  • @AJMD08 : A very valid and articulate comment my friend. Out of interest, could you recommend an artist who has sang this to your liking? You obviously have a good ear.

  • @triggsy80 Emma Kirkby, famous for her performances of early music.

  • @AJMD08 I agree with you 100% but what does it REALLY matter? It is beautiful music and a beautiful song whether it is sung by Emma Kirkby or Jessye Norman. Let us all embrace this wonderful music and be grateful that we are born into an age where we can access the internet and see such amazing artists and performances!! :)

  • @AJMD08 I think after so many centuries a few 'liberties' may be taken. One reason so many people hate classical music that (wrongly) they see it as stuffy. Why doggedly perform the same old pieces in the same old ways ad inf.? Isn't that approach the enemy of the creativity that bred this music and the instruments that made it possible? Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mozart, et al. didn't revolutionise music by always giving the public exactly what it expected or doing what had already been done.

  • @RussMoxham excellent point even though it is still breathtaking when done this beautifully.

  • @RussMoxham Personally, I happen to be an individual who finds classical music a little on the sterile side for emotion. As a matter of fact, it literally is. The classical era is noted for its use of rules rather than emotion when it comes to music.

To get some terminology straight though, this particular piece is out of the broke period which was known for how elaborate, full, emotional, and (especially) showy its music was. There is a lot more to revolutionary music than the classical era.

  • And to anyone replying to my previous comment, I do realize that I miss spelled "baroque".

  • @AJMD08 Are you kidding? Norman's voice is fluid as this piece was intended. Its flawlessly done. She's the master for this period piece.

  • @shereesemaynard SHE, can't be the master, no matter how good SHE is. She certainly is a genius of a singer and has a masterfull command of her art.

  • @oihanen Definately NOT a song for school age girls...far too deep and passionate!!

  • This performance by Jessye Norman is quite exquisite and the emotion she brings to the aria is beyond comparison..... Love it.

  • she has so much expression in her face. She becomes what ever she is singing about. I feel of the emotion and pain of this aria just in her eyes alone. She is a true Diva.

  • Yes, the Great Jessye Norman is still living and singing!!!

  • @TheUntitledHead I think she's still alive?

  • What an awesome voice! Excellent!

  • Dedicated to Shana !!

  • Oh my god was this awesome! I feel as if she is ruling a mysterious land and everyone is following her to heaven. Beautiful.

  • Amazing!

  • One of the most exquisite arias ever composed, sung as perfectly as it can be sung, in a performance that moved even this jaded professional conductor to tears.

  • I promise, I will remember You!

  • O-M-G! Amazing. I can hardly feel my feet on the floor. I'm suspended in air by the beauty of this voice. How clear, fluid, resonant, alive! You have manifested the angel spirit; harnessed by true love of life and love itself.

I feel your essence, and embrace all that is light.

  • The voice is like a silk , i want to cry when i listen her voice !

  • I can't choose. Kirkby or Norman. Well they both are wonderful, but completely different. Impossible to compare !

  • @PatateRoussoiste tough choice but i am partial to Ms. Norman!

  • i woke up last night and the tv was running... i was about to fall asleep again when this song tickled my ears... what a moment what a twilight: the brain on standby mode and the dreamy soul wide open

  • @dancelotski beautiful sentiment

  • Una delle più belle arie da melodramma, per una delle migliori interpreti di sempre.

  • Beautiful, moving and unforgettable. I love this Jessye.

  • Wonderful-

  • ¡Increíble!.Alcanza la perfección.Muy difícil de superar.Acaso,la versión mejor subida en Youtube.

  • Almost makes you look forward to your own Funeral.....

  • Thy hand belinda.... Beauty? Laid in earth... good gods,,,

  • Thy hand belinda....

  • what is she saying at the end?

  • @vmarshall51 She says:

"Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel,

In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied!" - Schöner gibt's nicht!

It's from a poem by Friedrich Rückert, set to music by Gustav Mahler. Translated:

"I live alone in my heaven,

in my love, in my song!" - There's nothing more beautiful!

  • she made me love opera

  • Is it possible to hear you?, I guess while been a Norman fan, I will love to hear anyone who resembles her. Of course I will not be definite in my opinions...but will love to hear you as well!!!.Best regards and the best of the lucks, toi toi, in bocca luppo, break aleg, etc.

  • this is a beautiful set...quite original i feel for dido

  • Unbelievable.

  • Her voice is smoother than silk.... Truly a masterpiece.

  • The eyes, the voice, the control, the musical interpretation the sheer depth of the performance. Jessye is surely a skill honed to total perfection...

  • I'm getting dizzy...

  • Comment removed

  • @tenorschofield I agree with you so much .....My coach and teacher said I sound just like her ...Now I wish that I was still in New York....
