  • Love it!!! Brilliant! Brava!!!!!

  • I love singers who can act. Their voices don't need to be beautiful at all times. What they do is have the voice serve the acting. And when this kind of singing works, and it does very well here with the brilliant Hildegard Behrens, then the performance is unforgettable.

  • I would like to thank you all for your kind, heart-felt comments about my beloved mother. Especially the one about her singing with the angels. That one is particularly fitting. God bless you all. Sincerely, S.H.Behrens

  • I remember vieweing the telecast of this Tosca from the Met. There was something very unique about Ms. Behrens' rendition was her ability to attack the high notes with the Wagnerian precisiion that most Italian singers don´t have. W´re used to the typical scopping but Ms. Behrens would aim beautifully like very few singers could (maybe Ms. Gilda Cruz-Romo was another). Amazing control when anybody would point that Ms. Behrens had a powerful trumpet for voice. Her "Vissi d'Arte" is a jewel. RIP

  • I just love her Tosca ! Haven't seen such a realistic and sincere version ! R.I.P. BEHRENS !!!!

  • I respected the artistry of Hildegard Behrens so much, though I admit she was not always my favorite soprano. It was more an acquired taste. I often found myself being caught up in her great dramatic portrayal as opposed to her voice....case in point being her Elettra in Idomeneo. I loved her Liebestod, and this too is quite beautiful. She is greatly missed. Brava!

  • after Callas, this is is my favorite Vissi D'arte

  • RIP Hlidegard - we lost a legend :(

  • I could swim in a pool of my tears.....so great.

  • She's a new abgel in heaven! Gorgeous!

  • I thought this was a spinto aria, but she sings this so beautifully. She truly was exceptional.

  • In memoria!!!!

  • IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT YOU DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT -TURN ELSEWHERE AND ENJOY

    so bad manners.....

  • @AfroPoli Who are you to judge?? get a life!!!

  • @IntampestusNox And who are you to judge? Shut up.

  • @IntampestusNox 1) I never said you judged her. 2) My "talking like that" was quoting you. Go figure.

  • @IntampestusNox Yawn.

  • Unforgettable...and beloved!

Mourning Becomes Electra...and Salome and Leonora and Marie and Brunchilde...

    Requiescat in pacem!

  • Sublime ... come non rimpiangerla ? How could we not cry for her death ? she was - I think - under-rated in respect of other sopranos ...but she was "divina"....absolutely !!!

  • Her Tosca, Fidelio, and Brunnhilde are masterpieces! My heart is broken. I look forward to your singing in heaven Miss Hildegard. Rest well our diva.

  • May she rest in peace and bring the intensity, sensivity and amazing ability to convey emotion to the singing in Heaven. She was a great soprano, without a doubt one of the most beautiful dramatic voices ever heard, and to this quality she added her almost unsurpassable credibility and intensity on stage in a repertoire from Mozart to Berg.

  • beautiful performance, great singer - we will always remember her

  • RIP Madame Behrens

  • What a fabulous artist. My heart breaks...Requiem in Pace, Dear Lady...

  • i'm sad.she was a great artist..

  • Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore.

    Farewell Mrs. Behrens.

  • Rispetto! Nun koennen Sie mit den Engeln singen! RIP!

  • We will miss your talent, now this amazing, beautiful lady can sing for the angels

  • The world will miss this talent - RIP.

  • Now sing for the angels, you amazing soprano.

  • Rest in Peace...

  • RIP Hildegard Behrens-

  • Rest in peace. You had an amazing voice. I am glad there are recordings like this that will keep your memory alive.

  • Stunningly beautiful... I gasped at the end..

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It is glorious! I haven't heard her often enough. My heart is breakiing. C.

  • just this week they showed a documentary with her on German TV, sorry to say I missed recording it, with lots of scenes and a framing interview with Behrens explaining her take on the roles. I must admit I never heard of her before because Wagner, Strauss etc. aren't my cup of tea but I was entranced by her voice AND personality. Perhaps they'll broadcast it again and I'll try to post it here somehow....

  • oh please do post the documentary for us in the US. Any documentary on the SUPERSOPRANO would be fascinating, as you are right, not only her voice is glorious but what a wonderful human being she is

  • I love this Opera & I love this Tosca. Thanks for posting: Jason D.

  • Who's the baritone? Cornell McNiel?

  • Parfait!!!!

  • Def not the right voice, but amazing!! And her upper register is almost unrivaled.

  • I don't care how old she was here, this was a first-class performance.

  • How old is she?

  • She is now 70. At the time she was 48.

  • dos she do Opera now or is she done?

  • Hildegard Behrens is currently living in Vienna and still sings in avant-garde venues such as the Ruhr Triennale and in Berlin (Maurizio Kagel). She is also doing master classes in Japan. Of course her greatest roles were Brunnhilde and Elektra where she was/remains unrivalled!!!!!!!!

  • The previous comment has been overtaken by events. She passed away in Tokyo a month ago.

  • Thank you for the info.

  • No prob. I don't know, but I think she's probably retired.

By the way, to see/hear another spectacular performance (this time by Diana Damrau), search youtube with these words:
