I love roasted marshmellows, mostly when they melt inside and crisp on the outside. lol loved it when you said you could taste the carbon, soo cute :3 They taste really good in a large open fire, maybe the flame was too small?
My favourite way of roasting marshmallows is over really hot coals cos that way they literally just start melting and the you put them on biscuits and they're delicious but barbecue works well too, oh and candles don't have a big enough flame to heat then enough. that's probably why they looked black and lumpy.

I think you burned them, they look black (it isn't very good for you to eat burned carbs- in a you can get cancer way). What you are aiming for is a light brown colour I suggest holding the marshmallow above the candle instead of in it, or you can completely burn the outside until it is black this way you can remove the burned outside and eat the gooey centre, about the hershey bars you can use any sort of chocolate in bar shape i think. Good luck!
Actually, if you have a barbecue grill, you can heat the marshmallows up over it as well. They're better if you have some graham crackers and some Hershey bars so you can have S'mores. In the case of S'mores, the marshmallows don't have to have carbon on them, they just have to be soft enough to squish a bit.
I know someone who used their stove-top to roast marshmallows before, but I'm completely unsure about the safety there.
@elorfinthendt Thanks for the tips! I actually have no idea what Graham crackers are and I have no idea where to buy Hershey bars cause they're so hard to find in Australia! and I was told once that if you roast them over a stove, they taste like gas. Haha. but I haven't dared to try that :P
@Pivaxi Ah! You have a gas stove! I was thinking electric! You can always google graham cracker (since I'm not allowed to link anything in comments) but essentially it's a wafer style cookie/biscuit. I also know someone who melts the marshmallows a little in the microwave first (so they're pliable). I suppose any chocolate bar will do as long as it's thin-ish.
