The train crews used it as living quarters during long hauls, and the conductor, responsible for train and contents, had his log book and records here. In the earlier days, with weaker brakes, the caboose doubled as a stop-block if necessary, having its own handbrake.

I miss seeing the caboose. I lived on the Conrail WLR and remember most of the ones were either ex PRR cabin cars or bay windows.
