  • Wow, this was a great look back.

  • do cabooses have wood burning stoves or gas?

  • wow days gone away i remeber them and the old car carriers

  • I miss seeing the caboose. I lived on the Conrail WLR and remember most of the ones were either ex PRR cabin cars or bay windows.

  • This is amazing! Thank you for showing us some fantastic footage of a part of railroading long gone. Long live the Caboose and long live SP

  • One day I want to buy and restore a caboose. Then put it in the back yard as a guest house.

  • Waht was the purpose of the caboose?

  • @cartape There were several uses; the caboose served as a lookout post to monitor the unmanned freight cars in case of any defects or fires. The train crews used it as living quarters during long hauls, and the conductor, responsible for train and contents, had his log book and records here. In the earlier days, with weaker brakes, the caboose doubled as a stop-block if necessary, having its own handbrake.

  • I like a video from the locomotive cab just as much as anyone else but this is a really cool video of how it used to be!

  • Wow! what a great video.
