I discovered Helen via Woody Allen movies soundtrack. What a glorious day that was,for me,anyway. She was such a breath of fresh air. The fact that she fronted the three biggest orchestras of the day,Harry James,Artie Shaw, and Benny Goodman is testament to her greatness. Barely a day goes by without me listening to her.
I've been waiting for years to hear this recording . . . and I'm only only 63! My former long-term boss used to have Big Band music playing on the office radio. I got a good education on real, quality music . . . and a price can't be put on that.
What's the quote about . . . "you can't teach good taste" ?
Mmm..i believe it was in 1938, at the carnegie hall in chicago....it was broadcast live. I used to have a coffret of the entire show...I could even ear the crowd in the background. By the way, in it, there was one hell off a song... Man from Mars .. if you can find it, ya gotta listen to hit...that is one off my favorite Big band, swing kid song :D
Helen was a swell dame with all the bands she sang with.
