I think I may be in love. This is just swag at it's finest! I love that the kiss isn't at all trashy. Just a sweet innocent little peck on the mouth. And Marlene Dietrich pulls this off so well!
The whole straight bi gay story is so tired now...people are sexual beings and in more liberated people they can be all those things in a lifetime...hell...all those things in one evening! lol
It's a pity that a bunch of bluenoses in Washington were able to bully the studio heads into calling in that thin lipped old lady Joe Breen to set up his ridiculous Production Code. I suppose it was inevitable, but it would have been nice if this masterful era in American Cinema would have lasted a bit longer.
The power of the bisexual female having both genders in her thrall. Marlene plays a total dish rag/ floor mat for Gary Cooper, but still manages one the greatest Drag King scenes ever performed. Check out Marlene’s shoes. Kudos to Josef von Sternberg.
Marlene stealing a kiss from Eve Southern. N.B. the eye contact between Marlene & Eve as it leads up to the kiss, see 144-224, supra.
@egirl150 Or Anais Nin, or Virginia Woolf, or Nathalie Barney, or Vita Sackville West, or Gertrude Stein, or Radclyffe Hall, or Colette, etc, etc, etc...
Stunning! Who can imagine such a "big thing" happen during the 30s? Oh God, sometimes I believe that they were more wide open-minded. There's bi-sexuality and a very enchantful irony in terms of exchanging roles and genders. So natural, classy but at the same time entertaining. Pure cinema! Marlene kiss me...
Nowadays, lesbianism is TASTELESSLY EXPOSED by having both ladies rubbing her sweat-covered silicones. After a while, you've seen pretty much everything they can make around it and switch to digitalized orcs and elfs slauthering each others with battleaxes (which is almost as silly, but plays for variety).
Just to add... There are definitely aspects of modern cinema that have vastly improved on the past. For example, while the situation is far from perfect, there are _much_ better roles available to Black actors.
But something definitely seems to have been lost from the portrayal of sexuality.
@anemone9 To answer your question, laziness of the writers or the cheapness of producers who are looking to make a profit without bothering about the art. Who knows, maybe they need to bring the Code back so that people can start to think about how they want to show their work without actually having to show it.
There is no Marlene, there is no Gary, all we have is silly Brangelina. What a world of talent has been lost in film making with today's self-indulgent and overpaid actors. Thank God we have these films preserved as proof there was once great talent-without tits hanging out.
What a way to introduce a new star! Dress her in a man's suit, have her kiss another woman on the mouth, then flip a flower to her male co-star! Great bi-sexual sizzle! This scene would have people up in arms today! Imagine how people reacted in 1930. What brass. Great stuff!
@TNviewer01 I agree with you. You know, though, in Berlin in 1930, many people would have been less shocked by this than today in, say, the Midwest of America. By this time, she'd been doing cabaret, some of it lesbian, and dating women (and maybe men) in Berlin for years. You might find the book Hot Girls of Weimar Berlin really interesting to give you some context for this scene. It's a great book.
@TNviewer01 Pretty much from the "fall" of the Victorian era on was actually a VERY sexually liberal time. If you ever listen to any of the Blues music from the 20's-40's (which I highly suggest!) it was VERY pornographic, and dirty, as were most of the early cartoons, and MANY early movies contained quite a large number of in the least "lingere" shots of beautiful women.
It wasn't until the tight assed culture of the 50's that things changed.
@ComradeLupine yep it was the intro of something called the Hays Code, which ended in 67 or 68, which is why you get all the very violent and very sexual films of the 1970s, the rise of the B-movie again

@KyraVarney That's your opinion. I don't see what's so great about it. She's not really attractive, her singing, the style and all, is way outdated and boring, and the whole thing is rather dull. I guess if seeing a woman swagger like a man excites you then you'd think this is great, but it's not.
This movie is outdated in the same way that Hamlet and the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel are outdated. No one has to love Beethoven's Fifth, but it would be silly to dismiss the symphony for not being in keeping with modern orchestral music. Likewise, regardless of whether any particular person likes this movie, there's a reason that so many film experts acknowledge Morocco to be one of the all-time greats.
What a woman, only she can kiss another woman with class. Gary Cooper wasn't going to let her get away, that flower meant "I'll see you later Legionaire." Nostalgia at its best. Rest in peace Marlene, we love you.
Oh that singing! Zeesh!

In many ways we are in more conservative times than in the 1930s. Germany in particular was very different before Hitler came to power.

You have to admit that in those days there was something called CLASS!
Everything was possible, everything was going on, but there was discretion and what was done in the open was done in good taste.
Today everything is in the open and done for shock value only..
Is that freedom ? NO!
It debasing. It is all done satisfy and take profitable advantage of the prurient thoughts of ever more stupidified masses..
