  • one of my favorite ..... look how young .... amazing ..... like tears for fears said .... "funny how time fliesssssss"!

  • I surprise already perfect playing at this time!

  • @bocchi2008 well, by 77 they'd been a band for 5+ years (first recordings by Mark, Gerry, and Bob Lewis done in '70)

  • revolutionary stuff back then - very cool group to see live

  • I still like the version with the malfunctioning keyboard :) but this is sure great (and proof that they were better live).

  • Just the best and wittiest band ever...!

  • Saw them do this a week ago...they can STILL nail it on the head 34 years later!

  • Pretty cool that the voting is 213-0 on this one - too obscure for the haters.

  • Devo must sacrifice themselves. So that many others my live.

  • I'm so tired of the soup du jour out there.

  • and devo is STILL together

  • wow i am such a spud... i wish i was alive then... class of 2012 sounds lame now...

  • Fu-hu-hu-hu-huck yeah!

Do any of you have any idea what deep thinkers these guys are and how INCREDIBLY subversive they are? This is not about music. omg. Fucking geniuses!!!

  • that synth line at the beginning is awfully industrial sounding.

  • @alucardisdumb

Oops, I thought you said it was awful sounding. Somehow my eyes skipped over industrial.

  • @juliandunn nah bro cant shit talk anyone with energy domes bro.

  • More than 30 years old and still better than the shit out there now like Stinkin' Park, Lady Caca, Katie Perry or Kanye Asshole West.

  • @Dietpepsivanilla don't forget 50 cunt

  • @fuckamericanidiot You're right, my bad.

  • RULES. Period.

  • @MikeIXWilliams I'm completely agree with you,man

  • Sick! The world would not be the same without DEVO.

  • Masterpiece!!!!

  • it's a real piece of collection in black and white.

    I like them a lot

  • @7495245

Maybe, but I find black and white footage for anything take place after 1966 to be somewhat unsettling and often pretentious.

  • @DTD110865 you must be in your twenties. B&W, whatever format, 8mm, 16mm is cheaper and more accesable. This looks like video, which leads one to believe either the color has bled from this vid or it was just shot that way. What a strange comment.

  • Comment removed

  • @Grandpaconway

No, I'm in my forties, and yes I realized B&W 8mm & 16 mm film was cheaper. Were it not for the fact that there were still average joes who were still using B&W home movies, it would irk me a lot more.

(BTW, I didn't want to delete this version of the message).

  • @Grandpaconway I've seen lots of fan taped vids of bands from the 70's that were taped in black and white. I am guessing that these were people with old Sony reel-to-reel video recorder setups who lugged their setups into the clubs and taped. Other examples of video like this are vids like Target's Cramps at Napa Asylum, Talking Heads at My Fathers Place, and B-52s in Atlanta 1978, most you can see here on youtube. I am so thankful that there were people to document these shows back then.

  • this makes up for all the meaningless, worthless crap that gets posted. performances like this one should be immortalized and preserved for ever and for all. thank you, DEVO ROCKS

  • Oh to be there

  • this is so beautifully raw

  • Wow... This is rare..... Geez!

  • You are a God for recording this for prosperity. Whoever you are! Thanks for posting! Can't imagine this would be available, at all, ever! Etch it in a gold disc!

  • One of the most awesome video clips I've ever seen on the Tube!

  • THANK YOU.

    BEAUTIFUL.

  • The world needed Devo. The world needs the next Devo.

  • @danzarek

    The world still needs Devo...

  • @BlueCollarTweeker

the worls needs you and your actions (motivated by Devo)

  • @BlueCollarTweeker More than ever, actually.

  • The world needed Devo.

  • Mark Mothersbaugh is greater than pavarotti, just for the record:)

  • DEVO IS THE BEST BAND IN MY OPINION.. NO JOKE

  • This gets my vote for BEST VIDEO EVER ON YOUTUBE! It rips harder than anything on this website.

  • holy sh*t, this video EXPLODES at 4:20. most people don't realize that Devo was a hard rocking punk band in the early days. this video definitely sets the record straight!

  • I had NO IDEA this song was that ANCIENT; I thought this came out in about 1983. That's when I first heard it! July 1977, I was climbing a tree overlooking my friends right where E. Wellesley Ave. met the Idaho border. (East Spokane near Post Falls, Idaho). I barely remember that tree, but I told everyone what to do to make a great "fort" where no one could find us.

  • @AIKevorkian If you like this you may like Wall Of Voodoo`s pre-pop stuff like Red Light & Can`t Make Love. Somewhat scary but Devo were the pioneers of New Wave, not punk! Let`s all get that strait. Can`t help you with that fort thingie though.

  • wow. so cool the tape was rolling for this. I saw DEVO in Nov 2009, and they played this with the same urgency, soul and fun as in this performance. Really rocked for the crowd. Great to see Bob 1 sing and play that great solo and hold up his muscles after breaking the string to end the 2nd solo.

  • mongoloid it's real!

  • Historic!

  • this stuff is so good. bands today, you are good too! play like this!!!!

  • come to mexico pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • 2:50 - 4:04 ; wow.

  • Easily one of the best DEVO videos out there.

  • The best part is that this is ONE vid that WMG (w t f) can't take down. That said, dear spuds and spudlets, do some comparison shopping: While it's still up (yeah, I'm tawkin' t' you jerkwads at WMG and KYTube), go check gadgetman2000's Smart Patrol posting over there in the pile -->

("KYTube" -- get it? shovin' WMG's pole in our holes ....)

  • guitarist is fucking mental!

    what you said jwild611

  • I think the fact that the quality of the video is grainy just enhances everything in a strange way...

like I'm watching this crazy awesome performance through a time machine window under the influence of LSD..

    DEVO'S THE FUCKING SHIT

  • "I´m just a spud boy looking for a real tomato"

  • I was at this show. A year or two later they totally stylized their show and were playing in big theaters.

  • This totally kicks ass...too bad Duty Now For the Future hasn't got the deluxe cd treatment...I love that one.

  • I'll march to this beat anyday

  • So freakin awesome! - 1 of my faves

  • I love watching Bob 1 play that solo in this song.

  • Bob 1 is so freaking cool.

  • God Bless Ohio. What a fucking holy noise.

  • Huh...huh ......huh..huh....huh...huh...he said "prophylactic" Priceless DEVO!

  • Someone called this "Bob's Song", how very apt

  • perfection!

  • I never get tired of hearing Smart Patrol/ Mr. DNA! This is one of the best versions of it that I have ever listened to. Awesome!

  • ANTI ESTABLISHMENT I REALLY LOVE THE SOUP DEjOUR

  • Best devo song(s) ever

  • This is one of the most important songs in music history. Who knew that the late 70's would be SUCH an important time?

    Thank god.

  • Alan Meyers is da man!

  • i wonder when it was exactly that they became colour. it must be before this because the 'truth about de-evolution' video is older and in colour, they must have asked to be in black and white for this one. or the guy filming it was in black and white.

  • Was the guy filming it Wacko (Paedo) Jacko?

  • ....mmm

  • fuck 1!!!!!!!

  • r4go!!!1

  • I was at this show. Devo got better over time.

  • Liar.

  • Why would you make such a stupid comment? You're a fucking moron.

  • LIAR!! You were not there, because I was and I didn't see you there.

  • You are not old enough "theonlytruepunk" !

  • ????? I am definitely old enough,.

  • he was there, i saw him

  • ..going to work now spuds !

They are still on the road , with the same energy !

I will see them the 6 of May 2009 in London !

  • i'll be there too!!!

    cant wait!!!

  • it has that mashed sound which is on the vid for secret agent man

  • Truly awsome. I love the way Bob I plays his rock star face during guitar solos.

  • Brings me back was there for this show-still fresh today!

  • Devo was so ahead of their time and so prophetic!

  • chills-everytime

  • Q. Is ther anyone cooler than Devo

    A. NO !!!

    Thanks For posting this one

    Good Job Spud

  • Best two-song punch EVER! Beyond belief when you see it live 10 feet away.

  • Punk!

  • holy shit

  • hOLY FUGGIN SHIT!!gREATEST VID EVAH ON youTube!!!

  • This is fantastic! please more :) where did this come from?

  • This was filmed from the DJ booth at Max's.

  • I was at this show. This is one of the first two times they played Max's.

  • dude...dude.....dude....dude, holy shit....dude.........are you serious?? i would kill to have seen this show. apperently this was the first show they broke out a pair of the trademark 3D glasses from the filming of jocko homo. But of coarse, they started wearing them inside exposing the squares of film. fucking great

  • Yes, I'm serious. I saw them the first time they played at Max's. I tried to book them shortly after that, but no one knew who they were and I couldn't land them a gig. Soon after that, Bowie went to see them at Max's and they suddenly got very famous.

  • They have been bad ass for a long time thank you for posting this baby up there

  • The oldest video I've seen of my favorite DEVO song. Thanks!

  • Amazing! Please! Post more from this performance!

  • A bit fatter these days but still fantastic.

  • Dude, this is fucking rare. Where the fudge did you find this?

  • hey did you get this from dime a dozen

  • I was there too, and i dont remember seeing YOU!!! Liar!!

  • i was there man

  • I want my tail back.

  • So do I, we've been cheated by nature!!

  • It looks like they used Apollo era TV cams.

  • Wait a minute something's wrong!

  • Greatest club ever, too!

  • Excellent!

  • Greatest band ever!

  • One of 'em, ∂₫. The Blockheads are my favourite.

  • its about 1977 when i got sucked in by the devo hoover, never looked back since.p.s you couldnt swing a cat on that stage.

  • THIS IS WHY IM GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK!

  • Pretty f'ing amazing for not having recorded their first album yet.

  • I THINK

  • this is from devo live the mongoloid years

  • No, The Mongoloid Years MKC recording is from November 1977.

  • the synth...the settings sound like they havent changed since the old secret agent man vid one year prior

  • Very, very awesome.

Nice to see you back, Dr. B!

  • so rare.... byrthfood, it's good having you back...

  • incredible video from the past...thanks for posting here.

is this the 'third' Mauthersbaugh on the drums ?

Do you have more video of this years ?

  • Jim Mothersbaugh quit in '76, so it should be Alan.

  • it is, he's wearing glasses.

    i don't think jim did.

  • I think the only MB that wore glasses, is Mark, who is 'Legally Blind' without 'em. Oh yeah, Rob wears glasses too!!

  • Mark wears glasses " Ive worn them, he is VERY VERY blind"

Bob1 Wore glasses, you can see in some candid shots, but never live.

Alan Wears glasses, but stopped after about 1981.

  • Bob1 wore glasses... wow!! And Alan still wears glasses, check the Wikipedia page.

You've worn Mark's glasses? Awesome!! Did you ask him what strength they were?

  • Yeah, I saw him outside his studio by pure chance while driving in LA. comparing his to mine, they were about -15.00 to about -20.00 strength, Im guessing.

  • Bloody Nora, I'd love to wear Mark's specs!!

  • It was quite an experience, I met him by chance, interrupted a mini photo shoot he was having in front of Mutato, and took a few great pictures with him. He seemed to be excited to see a spud under the age of 40 come to his studio just to see him " Im 15, so he was greatly pleased and had a huge grin on the whole time" Lovely guy, I nearly asked if I could go inside, but he is such a busy man, I wouldnt dare.

  • I'd also love to meet Mark, but I'm from England, so I'll never get the chance...

  • on this tour, at least in the US, they did meets and greets, which I attended one in LA. Maybe they'll do that when they go to your side of th pond.

  • dude I want to meet him!

  • That. Was. Beautiful. Expecially near the end.

    Thank you.

  • Wow! Where did you find this, Dr. Byrthfood?

  • It's up on dimeadozen right now.
