Great video. I really liked the bit where you showed how to hold the neck of the ukulele. Very important tip, and I haven't seen any other youtube video mention it. Thanks!
This is my first time ever commenting on Youtube...But I just wanted to let you know that this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Now I can play all those songs in the key of F...
I thank you very much and I hope you are coming along well.
Gahh This helped soooo much! haha unfortunately, I still have to apply a crapload of pressure even with my finger on the side to get the buzzing out... And my thumb muscle thingy is really sore... newbie problems...
OK.. so Ive been playing for about a year.. but I keep running into this problem. anytime I play a "barred" chord (like B and Bb) the pressure I'm putting on the back of the ukueles neck hurts my thumb after a little while... Any advice? IT HURTS! I want to be able to play for hours! :]
This was very helpful. Thank you. I really like video's from new people because they still remember all the new people problems and focus on them before they focus on more urbane problems.
I'm a newbie and was having difficulty finding that damned Bb... it diddnt occur to me to move my grip - once i did, Bb's are suddenly quite easy (though require a few fractions of a second to prepare for) i guess that will even out in time. Thanks again, Most helpful
Thanks, I actually was looking for a help with nailing a Bminor but for some reason did a youTube search for a Bflat. I usually have no problem playing the Bflat but kept watching your video to find that your advice actually fixed my Bminor! Thanks again
Look at the video at 1:58. I'm not sure if your doing this already, but to bar the first two strings with your pointer finger you should rotate it some. It is much easier to apply pressure with the side of your finger, rather tan bottom.
I tend to rotate a finger whenever I'm barring multiple strings to help apply more pressure.
Do you still play other chords (C, G, and F for example) the old way, or have you since converted all you playing to the thumb on the back of the neck technique?
OMG Thank you so much! I just got a Uke for christmas and I'm trying to learn "All You Need is Love" and "First Day Of My Life" both of which have Bflats... I was going crazy trying to figure that one out! You're exactly right, it's hard to reach the strings when you're holding the ukulele wrong! haha! Anyway, it's going much smoother now thanks to you!!
As I started this video I was goofing around with the b and was like man this feels easy and I realized I had moved my thumb behind the neck. Great tip!!
This was exactly what I was looking for. I was also thinking that my index finger knuckle didn't bend back far enough. However I must use my pinky and ring fingers for the G and C strings. My middle finger won't reach the C string with my index finger tilted that much. My hands are 58 years old though. Anyway, thanks for this video, with your help, I can now play a B-Flat cord!
I said A minor, but I actually meant A flat - (G #). Thats the one I'm struggling with at the moment. A minor is a one finger chord. I might be a beginner too but I think I've mastered that one. :-)
Thanks for sharing Mark, no doubt others are having the same trouble. You might also try barring the first fret entirely with your pointer finger. That's the way that is most comfortable for me. Have fun!
yeah, i jus learned this tonight! waaaay mo bettah!
thx for the vid mark! this was a tough transition i had to make too... once my muscles finally stopped cramping, havin ur thumb li'dat allows for much easier transition an proper string pressure.
Thanks! My first impression was: "Man, that's a cool lookin' uke!" But, the thumb placement tip is also very helpful. I have similar problems with some other chords I'm learning as I transition from rank beginner to very weak intermediate!
When I first picked up a uke last summer, this was one of the hardest chords for me to play too! Personally I like to bar the first fret and use my middle and ring fingers, the way that you showed. The idea of moving you thumb on the neck of you instrument is an idea that is common not only in the uke, but also when you play guitar or bass. Thanks again for the video and if you want to see a few of my songs, check out my channel.
Why yes, it is a Kerry Char tenor. I just purchased it. I'm a little embarrassed by it because it's kinda silly being a beginner with such a great uke, but hopefully I'll "grow" into it. :)
I put a Low-G set of strings on it, so I can be more like some of my youtube heros: TAFKAM1, etc).
Thank you so much! This was so helpful and as soon as I tried it, it worked; first time! Thank you!

After playing for so long we forget things like this. This is a very legitimate lesson that many teachers mistakenly overlook.
