@sholto7 Yes, just finished reading the book by Peter Snow about Wellington against the French in the Peninsular Wars. God, that was some campaign but, as always, the British soldier did what was necessary and never lost a battle under Wellington. The first troops storming the breaches were named " the forlorn hope" because they had little chance of survival. What bravery!

It is all very well having lots of technology, but there are plenty of instances when business has to be done the 'old fashioned way,' ie fix bayonets, charge and make em have it! No other army in the world can do business like the British Army can. EG Falklands conflict-name another army that could hump 100-120lb Bergans over extremely rough terrain, in awful weather for 50 miles, and then paste an enemy in prepared positions. Yanks? NO CHANCE!
Well, there isn't much I can do for these kids, but whenever I'm in a pub, if there are people in uniform, that table's next round is on my tab - although I usually ask the landlord not to tell them who's paying for the round, just that it's from someone who appreciates the work they do. It'd be nice if more people did that - soldiers in uniform should never have pay for their drinks in their own country.

@emastro unfortunately we're not allowed to go into the public in uniform. Too much potential for targeted abuse from the wrong sorts. We have to be ever vigilant against the media and their pandering antics. It'd be nice if more people out there had your mentality. Thank you for that. But it only takes one of the other sort...
@PaladinOfLondon I don't think that's the case everywhere though. Apart from garrison towns like Aldershot where I suppose it's normal, I've seen people in uniform in a couple of pubs in North London as well (they may have been TA however)

@Drdans41 it depends what branch. usually any active duty marine, navy or army personel will be young between the ages of 17-23. when i was over there i saw some of our national guard guys and reservist that were a bit older.
@Drdans41 A ctually its more common im my military for a man to join early seventeen or so but from the rank of GunnerySergeant down to Private its like 28 to 18 im 18 and just got LCpl. so yeah when you get to the higher enliasted ranks its more common to see 30 to 35 year olds

if you have some intelligence they will try and find you a job thats right for you. Trust me, aplicants for regular army with A levels are few and far between. They will tell you to choose infantry as a backup job choice only.
but you might need A and B grades for officer selection.

@NonConformistable I got 9 A-C grades (inc. 2 A*).... joined infantry. Best thing I ever did, left the army, now in a well paid (and easy) job. @ryantika well the seargents in the careers office will ask you about your education and if you have A levels they will tell you to apply for officer selection or to go into a technical trade.
if you have some intelligence they will try and find you a job thats right for you. Trust me, aplicants for regular army with A levels are few and far between. They will tell you to choose infantry as a backup job choice only.
but you might need A and B grades for officer selection.

But I do believe that the blame goes to the cripple minded politicians who send troops to other ares for the sake of oil. The soldiers believe they are fighting for their homes, but infact they are fighting for oil and politics. Althoguh there is some heroism fort he simple fact that they believe that they fight for Home.

Shame that people in Britain don't apprieciate the sacrifice that those men and women make every day of the week. In Northern Ireland, some people would mock them and call them traitors. But the few who support them are 10 times better than that of those who are forced to, or put on their respect. I have respect for those boys. Not everything in the video is 100% true, but hey, it was meant with the best intentions, branding this guy a retard, for what was otherwise a fairly good video is a bit off hand.

@NonConformistable I got 9 A-C grades (inc. 2 A*).... joined infantry. Best thing I ever did, left the army, now in a well paid (and easy) job. I'd have ended up in a brain dead IT job, spending my evenings eating 3 tubes of Pringles, watching Deep Space Nine and wanking furiously over the big eared chick out of Lord of the Rings.
