@mizzoucalebsmith I think one of the reasons why he might be singing this in a heavier way is that he's singing with an orchestral accompaniment.
Also this was recorded relatively early in his career (when he was in his late 30s); you might like to check out a later recording (recorded in a recital in 2005 with Malcolm Martineau at the piano) where he sings two songs from the cycle ('Let Beauty Awake' and 'The Roadside Fire') where his voice and interpretation have matured quite a bit.
Its my first time to sing a complete song cycle for my junior recital! and damn! Songs of travel Rocks man!! ^^ ahahah! hope i can sing this with such finess and musicality as Sir Thomas Allen had.. bravo sir allen!
i don't know why but i really prefer this whole cycle with the piano accompaniment instead of the orchestral one. Sir Thomas Allen still sings it great though :)
I know he's way more talented than I am but I wish he would sing it more sweetly rather than with a heavy, basically operatic approach.
