@towerblockrock Of course, it wasn't write down into "Official Register Of Music Genres", so it don't exist. :)
That is how music generes/tags or even band names are created - some music journalist use new phrase as a joke. No one declare vivid border between what is and isn't genere.

This and Neutral Milk Hotel are some of the biggest tragedies in recent music history. They both made two albums, one of which is a classic, the other is good, then they stop forever.
In The Aeroplane over the Sea and Loveless are both in my Top 5 Albums.
what the fuck are you talking about man i love this shit - and spacemen 3 - living and dying by dream pop.. you guys are all just so precious about loveless.
There is a distinction... Shields says that MBV is in no way a 'shoegaze' band and that the description is wrong. For my part, and I'm a radio DJ who plays mostly shoegaze, MBV were an influence on the purported shoegaze 'scene' but Loveless dropped in 1991, and MBV were actually done before then. Original 'shoegaze' reached its peak in 1992 and the first wave was over by 1994. So its complicated... but they weren't 'shoegaze'...
There were some genuine shoegaze albums before 1991. You can't be so picky about years with stuff like this. Its a lot more fluid than that. Peak=/=genre
That'd be like saying that the Cro-Mags weren't hardcore cause hardcore was pretty much dead by the end of 84.
I'm just citing what Shields has said. i wouldn't want to second guess him. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, personally this is how I approach MBV, in fact I did a show last fall analyzing this whole phenomenon, and callers agreed with me for the most part. And don't cite the Cro-Mags, this is an MBV video son.
I was just mentioning that they are an important hardcore band despite coming after hardcore was pretty much dead. You'd never call them "nucore" would you?
I guess if he said that, it must have some credence. I wasn't there, its just that everything I've heard about it characterizes it as a late-80's/early-90's scene. Thats all.

MBV had most of their career in the mid 80's with all that psych revival shit. like spaceman 3 and what not. they just fucked with it all a bit further.
I agree with you. Loveless is a good first album to get started on but then you should branch out to the older albums. This Is Your Bloody Valentine is brilliant, along with The New Record By. Personally, I think it's a lot better than Loveless, Everything they actually have done is just incredible.
those are really EPs, and the EPs get far better than those in my opinion! But yes, whilst you're limited to two proper albums with isn't anything, the EPs are well worth seeking out! Tremolo is tasty

Loveless actually sounded very disappointing at the time. Boring, Sub_cocteaus shit like Blown a Wish. They were NEVER really that ethereal and dreamy. It was always more about GRRRRRRRTTTTTSCHHHHHHHHHH
In my opinion, the entire notion of a shoegaze 'scene' is fairly misleading. People can get lost in the relevance of labels; would you say that Ride, Lush, The Veldt, Catherine Wheel, Swervedriver and Chapterhouse are all shoegaze? They have all been labeled as such in the past, but such indiscriminate labeling has degraded the relevance of the 'shoegaze' genre considerably. And there have been multiple movements since that could also be called shoegaze
There WAS NO FUCKING SHOGAZE scene you cunt. Therer was MBV and loads of also-rans. Like Boo Radleys, Cthaerine Wheel, Slowdive, Telescopes and fucking Lush who were all orange hair, effects pedals and 4 AD flim-flam.
Thanks for adding the better sound to kirkj31's video recording! I still can't believe I'm going to be watching them play tomorrow night. This is awesome!!!!!!!!
I think Medicine was the only band to do it well enough to really be mentioned in the same sentence as MBV. MBV elements are there, certainly, but they had a slightly different approach. Both bands were fantastic, either way you cut it. MBV and Medicine albums are some of the very faves in my collection.

I think 'Isn't Anything' is the superior record.
And there was no 'shoegaze' scene. 'Shoe-gazer' was a humourous term used by the British music press.

For a "DJ who plays mostly shoegaze" your knowledge about the scene appears to be severely lacking.
