Great song. got this on vinyl and bought it about 8 years ago on CD. Saw them at Saddlers Well Theatre London in early 89 great combo of Natalie and Micheal Stipe...... 2 of my all time favourite acts....... this album rocks.......and the cover of "Peace Train" by cat stevens ...... check out "Back o' the Moon" from "The Wishing Chair" album by 10000 Maniacs....... superb....form a 42 year old REM and Maniacs fan
This music holds up surprisingly well. It's hard to believe it has been over twenty years since this album was released. Sadly music of this quality is becoming obsolete.
I would really enjoy to sit and dialogue with Natalie. There are very few individuals that engage in philosophical thought in our post modern society. It was, and still is refreshing to hear rich lyrics, and songs that stir the mind and soul.
I found these guys "by mistake" and talk about finding gold. This really is one of the BEST albums ever recorded. Diverse music, great lyrics, great melodies and social relevance. Brilliant!
@10191927 Don't you mean so in the 60's" Just a tad like Cat Stevens and a few others from that era. It's what made them stand out so much. A little Michael Stipe to boot... "He can't beg or steal."
@r1skate Well I mean a group like 10,000 Maniacs with such a strong female lead, and creating such a unique sound that was so radically different from other music in the 80's, and to this day its never been matched, nor will ever be. They really are timeless.
@10191927 I'm sorry it's just that I only went by what you wrote. Kind of tough to go by what you meant. In either case it made me come back and listen again. Which to me is never an issue even after all these years. Timeless as you wrote fits so well. ALOT of Natalie and a little Michael Stipe=SWEET!
This song was on sponge Bob?...Really?..I held a rope for the Spongebob float in the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade once...The windiest, rainy, day they had in many years....It was wild!
saw them in concert about a dozen times both east and west coast. the best performance was at the Irvine Meadows in Orange County, outdoor, beautiful night, just absolutely magical.
Look around our country...unthinking development of clappy-trappy houses, shopping centers, the tearing down of gorgeous forests and the bulldozing of prairies and valleys...and all for gold and GREED! Grrr! Sing it, Natalie!!
when i first heard this - about 1989 - i already had about four REM albums...but for some reason, i didn't realise that stipe did the backing track...until now...oddly enough - and this is quite true - i remember thinking that natalie merchant's vocal style was similiar to stipe's and i remember saying so to friends - who just laughed at me...
and there he was - perfoming on the album...how ridiculous and how strange.
love this song. like all of in my tribe, this is a wonderfully thoughtful piece of music. she's the only person i know who has rhymed four-poster and torpor in the same song.
An excellent track and a wonderful vocal pairing of Natalie Merchant and REM's Michael Stipe on vocals. I do wish he had taken a more active vocal role in this song. From the essential album "In My Tribe". Initial pressings contained one of 10,000 Maniacs best recordings; the Cat Stevens track "Peace Train"...
Never realize it was Michael Stipe. No wonder it sound so familiar. I even have the album, guess I just never looked. Too busy listening... As many of you may know. Thanks!
Have the album signed by the band
