I've heard of this "dense cities" bullshit before. So what happens when dense city philosophy combines with shortages of construction approvals, say, like, in Sydney, Los Angelis? This causes increases in prices and causes an outflow of people. It irritates me when scientists get involved in economics, as if they have some deep insight into it.
If how the Earth recycles itself causes massive damage to human life so on and so forth. How the heck does it being a recycling process change the fact that to do the seas must raise. Large chunks of ice falling in the ocean and melting will change how high the sea is just because it has happened before doesn't make it safe. It's like saying our being here has had no real effect, we pollute animals die, we pollute a lot Earth has hard time working it's way out of it.
Where is your proof of this? I don't get how you can honestly think anyone will take you seriously when you just say "Nup sorry you're wrong" without any real proof whatsoever.
"Weather stats are only reliable going back 80 years."
richardthripp, catch up on yesterday's national news. It made every major network.
No, the oceans are not rising. The ice, the size of the state of Connecticut, just detached from the land. This ice mass was holding an enormous glacier in place. If this glacier slips into the ocean, the oceans will rise. Every meteorologist reported this news yesterday. I suggest you watch Sam Champion on ABC's "Good Morning America" in a few hours.
richardthripp, I guess you did not catch the news today. Ice, the size of Connecticut just broke away from the Antarctic. This ice will not raise the sea level; the glacier it was supporting from drifting into the ocean will raise the sea level.
Don't believe me, read today's news. Please do not think your opinion is fact. You don't even pay attention to current events.
20ft? that's about 6 metres! you would need to add over 2 million cubic Km of water for that!
There is about 24 million cubic Km. of water stored in glaciers, ice caps and permanent snow around the world... so 2 million is just a tenth of that melting... not so far-fetched at the rate we are going. Greenland puts out 500 Km^3 of water/year... question is: if snow slows down because reflected heat off snow onto greenhouse air... the cycle is not balanced, more coming out than in!
0.2 mm is what I estimate the Wilkins Ice sheet break-up of last week caused. The amount of water that was put into the ocean in that break up was about 60^3 Km... this contributes about 0.15-0.2 mm of sea level rise. Scientists are perfectly aware of this but do not report it as such... I do not know why, but its nice to have the numbers in perspective... wouldn't you agree? Maybe call the news outlets and ask them to report this with a full scientific explanation?
Wiki does not say that, it says that 30 million is the total, Antarctica is about 27 million km^3... But that is a rough estimate. A more reliable source I read brought the figure around 24-25 million km^3 of frozen water in total, there is many variations like if you are to include that frozen water that is above sea level, or the density change when unfrozen is factored in, etc. the point is, that much clearer perspectives on this need to be discussed everywhere, we all need to understand.
correction: 405 km^2 is the area of the ice sheet that broke off during the first weeks of March 08. Multiplied by 0.15 (not 150) km, or 150 Metres! This ice shelf averages 200 m thickness, so like a huge ice & platform, exposing about 100-150 m off the surface. So volume of collapse is probably less than 60 km^3 but not less than 30 Km^3 therefore overall sea level rise is 0.1 mm due to this event.
yes, looking further into this: liquid water in the oceans expands by 2.07 x 10^-4 of its original volume for each 1 °C change...
Density of sea level seems quite complex for me to figure out since decreased salinity, higher evaporation and other factors play a role... but my estimates are that ~0.003 % min. increase in density would occur with a 3 deg. sea temp rise. Average volume of the seas= 1.3×10^9 km3 increase volume ~400,000 km^3 SL rise due to expansion= 1.2 m. with exponential growth.

actually, I just calculated how much 60.75 km^3 would raise sea level:
361,060,000 km2 area of earth's oceans
405 km 2 * 150 = 60.75 km3 raises sea level by ~ 0.2 mm
360,000 km^3 to raise sea level 1 metre
36,000 km^3 to raise sea level 10 cm.
3,600 km^3 to raise sea level 1 cm
360 km^3 to raise sea level 1mm
36km3 to raise sea level 0.1 mm
chachalaca777 3 years ago
chachalaca777, you just calculated it. Interesting.
The world's scientists calculated it to be as much as 20 feet in NYC and Southern Florida. Maybe you should give one of them a call.

First, your calculation is correct!
But the ice sheet is not 60 km^3. You have actually missed quite a lot of zero.....
For example (from wiki): The Antarctic ice sheet contains 30 million km³ of ice.
arabidopsissb 3 years ago

Most of the ocean level rise is due to thermal expansion and not water from the melting icecaps.
